HB IS BACK

Excellent news, well earned contract. Coach Brown wants him no one else should really be all that sour about this, but I suppose you cant make everyone happy. Never bought for a second any rumors saying the Kings wouldn't bring him back.

"Dance with the one who brought you"

Just because he shot 24% from 3 in the playoff series doesnt mean thats what will keep happening, this is a safe bet. He obviously keeps in terrific shape and looks lean as he always did, so I'm not all that worried about him slowing down due to age. He looks exactly the same to me after all these years, like appearance wise he doesnt look like he's aged 11 years in his time in the NBA.

I like the idea that with more experience and chemistry built already that we'll see an uptick from that alone, and when your talking some of these other PF options for us, its not always guys like Barnes who can be patient and wait to step up when its his time to hit big shots, as he did for us in the regular season, some of the other options are more high volume types that could shift our shot distribution possibly in an unhealthy manner.

So assuming…
  • Barnes’ deal has 8% increases
  • We waive Dozier
  • We keep Lyles cap hold
  • Use the room exception on Sasha
…we’d have $16.996 mil in cap space with the following roster in place…

PG - Fox / Mitchell
SG - Huerter / Monk / Jones
SF - Murray / Sasha Edwards
PF - Barnes / Lyles / Slawson
C - Sabonis
Yeah that 17 mil is basically a perfect bullet to make a run at pretty much that whole mid-tier class:

Brown
Williams
PJW
Rui?

Maybe you split that cash and go get like TP and Mason Plumlee?

I mean yeah, that's a great point. If Brown can look past his playoff performance, so can we. And obviously, I'm sure he was consulted in bringing HB back.

The only downside is at this point any more additions are just depth. Fox/Davion/Huerter/Monk/Barnes/Keegan/Domas/Lyles/Sasha. If they come back with that you can't really add to it all it does is look good on paper. We saw last year with TD. It doesn't work. Somebody is getting the TD spot where you are in and out of the lineup almost on a daily basis.

Ok, Monte's biggest assets now are a package of Huerter/Davion/space if he's trying to improve the roster. The 50/50 thing is the space of this deal fits exactly into two scenarios, the Domas/run it back almost to a T, and matching a contract amount for Harden. lol.

Monte loves trades, too. I could see another one being made very very soon
I really feal like huerter is gone and we go with a thre man roatation at guard with fox, monk, Mitchell. Jones will be there for depth as well as Kessler. Herb jones rotation with Barnes and Murray isn’t terrible idea lyles would still get time but I’m really wanting to see something in the way of a backup center

Yeah, great.
Let's keep "a step slow Barnes."
The one who bricked a game winning opportunity. The one that disappears. The one that rebounds for crap.

After the playoffs it was clear we needed to get Huerter and Barnes off the boat.

We need defense, rebounding, and athleticism. Barnes brings none of that to the table.

I truly believe that one of these days HB is gonna make all his damn shots in the playoffs n shut all the haters up. So I'm glad that its now extremely likely that'll be in a Kings uniform, for him to take us to the playoffs this past season n then have his big clutch vet moment somewhere else afterwards would be bittersweet.

IDK this is a good deal for the Kings if you ask me. Sounds like some team is about to pay double this for Kuzma.

Why did Monte even need to extend Barnes if this is an extension. I didn't even read the whole Woj tweet that said this was an extension and was agreed to. Did Monte pull another whoopsie here? haha. Another Bogdan situation?
Not sure.

It' looking like
1. We over spent
2. Can't trade him for a year.
3. 10% trade kicker.

Tur-rible.

Agree. You’d have too many guys deserving of minutes if you’re bringing in another one of those guys. That’s why I’m wondering if McNair is considering a S&T for a bigger name (with someone like Mitchell going out). For example, if it is a S&T of Davion for Cam Johnson, you’d at least have a solid minute rotation…

PG - Fox (34) / Monk (14)
SG - Huerter (28) / Monk (12) / Johnson (8)
SF - Johnson (20) / Barnes (28)
PF - Murray (30) / Sasha (14) / Lyles (4)
C - Sabonis (34) / Lyles (14)

Fox = 34 min
Sabonis = 34 min
Murray = 30 min
Huerter = 28 min
Johnson = 28 min
Barnes = 28 min
Monk = 26 min
Lyles = 18 min
Sasha = 14 min

That's the thing, why would he have a trade kicker? At least in the first year if he can't be traded? haha. 10% on his contract really isn't that bad. That would still actually put him at around fair market value for a wing who produces on his level.

Why is it a whoopsie? If they want to operate below the cap and keep Barnes the extension is less than his cap hold so gives them more room, no?

It's plausbile but that's pretty close to platooning after Fox and Domas. Better players losing minutes just so everybody can have a chance is OK on young teams, but in the real world we saw what happens in the playoffs last year, you hit the bench and watch haha. I would hope Murray isn't goig to only play 30 mpg. He needs to carve out that legit starter spot. Unless Sasha is not coming I don't see any additions to the F spot making sense. The only upgrade now is realistically at SG and yeah that requires a trade.

His contract would not have run out until 6:00 ET on Friday, June 30. Same situation as with Naz Reid.
Yeah, I didn't even realize this was an extension. My brain kind of imploded when I saw the word "contention" bandied about by Woj and I saw nothing else hahaha. I thought this was one of those wink, wink, nudge, nudge, this is what it's going to look like on Friday kind of things.

Well, let’s hope to see Keegan make big jumps to his game next year. I’m interested to see how else the Kings spend the rest of their FA money.

The Dallas trade isn’t looking great at the moment..
Depends on the 2nd piece/if there is a second piece.

For me, I wanted to grab 2 guys with this cash. Some combo of Williams/Brown/Hart/Reid/PJW etc. I didn't really expect HB to be back because of our cap moves and the trade, but it's basically the same thing if we still go grab a productive role guy to plug in. He's not the flashy new toy, but he is at least on par, if not better than this tier.

Channeling my 3rd eye a bit, I think we're going to make a play for PJW or Grant Williams now. With HB locked, we all of a sudden don't have to worry about the time constraint as much as before. And both guys are interchangeable with Lyles at the 4/5 and flexible 4/5 players.
