Well I guess we have now answered the philosophical question of whether there is such a thing as a good loss, because we just experienced such a phenomenon first hand.

We came out and went toe to toe with a team we may be trying to emulate, and our defense never did falter. We went defensive possession vs. defensive possession against them, and earned numerous roars from the home crowd for our stands. In the end it was a bit of an honor to force the Spurs to give us their full championship python crush defensive attention. But when they did squeeze us, it was illuminating that Boogie was the only King who could play through it on offense, and he had to try to one man gang us on home, I believe scoring 23 of our 37 second half points.

Two players have topped 30 points vs. Spurs in the regular season twice over the past two years: Steph Curry and DeMarcus Cousins.

Starters

Gay ( B- ) -- hard to grade accurately, because for a half he was quite good. He was banging in there with Cuz, and made Kawhi hit tough shots. But in the second half the Spurs, and Kawhi, gave us the championship python squeeze, and only Cuz came through it as Rudy disappeared against the pressure.

Cousins ( A ) -- showed his quality again outscoring and outrebounding Aldridge and Pau combined. Started the game a little overhyped, took a couple of ill advised threes. But upon his return in the 2nd immediately ran off 7 points, and did the same thing again in the 4th when everybody else was strangled, and Cuz was the only offensive player big time enough to push through. Added some smothering defense at times against Aldridge and Pau. Wanted this one.

Koufos ( C+ ) -- tough grade because he put up numbers, but what people are going to remember is a whole string of flubs. Dropped passes, blew gimmes..and yet got 4 of them finally as the Spurs left him open and guys kept on trying to find him. Despite shakiness, could have used his size instead of the smallballers in the 2nd half. Coaching error actually.

Afflalo ( C ) -- is it better to be shaky with numbers, or solid without? For much of the game Afflalo was solid without, but he was the one guy to step up to help Cuz late in the game, when he came back in for Ben and knocked down several clutch shots to get his numbers and his grade.

Featured Grade
Lawson ( B+ ) -- During the first half when the Kings were outplaying the Spurs, Lawson was a major factor in the game. He made the second-ever basket in the G1C (one that will be much more quickly forgotten than Cousins' first), ran the offense smoothly and importantly played tough defense on the Spurs' point guards (who ended up 2-13, much of that due to Ty). A signature play in the second quarter had Lawson dogging Patty Mills, desperate to get open, for nearly the full 24 seconds, denying the pass completely - and then getting the rebound off of the Spurs' last-option shot and immediately hitting Cousins with a long pass to draw a foul on Aldridge. Lawson was often at his best passing the ball up the court in transition. However, the Kings had a pretty lackluster second half, and Lawson's effectiveness was hindered by the Kings not beating the Spurs down the court and not cutting on offense. In the fourth, Lawson had three quick assists (two to Cousins) in our push to go from ten down to tie the game, but in the end the Spurs were the Spurs, and if anything Lawson was far too selfless, not at all looking for his own shot in the second half despite the Kings having trouble scoring. Still, this is clearly far more than we could possibly have hoped to ask for out of a reclamation project backup PG. -- Capt.

Bench

Tolliver ( D ) -- well, saavy isn't worth much if you are undersized and not hitting any of your shots, like ANY of them. And the end result is that like most of our non-Cuz bigs, Tolliver just gave us empty empty minutes out there. No shots hit, no rebounding, and being played over in there. Still some good defensive rotations though.

Barnes ( D+ ) -- and no. If Barnes were as good as Phx Barnes he'd be a star. Sometimes he is this instead. Missed his shots, and Joerger made a mistake having him trying to guard the full size and then some Spurs PFs, who wee shooting over him and overpowering him. Just didn;t have it.

Cauley-Stein ( D+ ) -- he did defend the rim, but his lack of offensive ability continues to look like a problem in this offense, he threw a bad pass, and now he's being outplayed by guys like Dedmond.

Featured Grade
Temple ( B- ) -- playing backup PG is really a defensive guard much more than playmaker or shooter. Tonight only played 12 minutes and all of it on Tony Parker holding him to zero stats: no FG, no Pts, no Ast until late in the 4th. Temple also had nearly zero stat night as well: no points and 3 assists but no TO. That was it but his defensive presence was noticeable for his limited minutes. Smart player, rarely out of position. -- Cruz

McLemore ( B- ) -- For the second game in a row Ben entered the game a new man, gunslinging the Texans and pouring in 10 points as we pushed out to a double digit lead. Then for the second game in a row everything changed as we tried to bring him back after half. Pop sicced Kawhi on him, and...well, if Ben ever does something to end up in prison at least he is knows about the soap trick now.

I applaud the defensive effort...it was consistent and that's what kept them in the game the whole time. The offensive execution was dreadful for too many spurts in the game however....I really look forward to the day Rudy is traded but I suppose that is for another thread huh?

how about a competent scorer not named Rudy Gay?
That was supposed to be Afflalo this year. Afflalo from an offensive perspective has been underwhelming. Just not making his shots. Did Ben steal his powers on that end?

I think once we get DC back, it'll help a ton. The Kings have lots of solid role players, but the problem arises when you realize that none of those role players can create their own shots consistently.
Barnes, Ben, WCS, and Tolliver struggle extremely if asked to create their own shots. Temple struggles less, because he's a better ball handler than them.

Can't win games unless our role players step up. They'll be the biggest factor. You already know that Cousins-Gay will probably give you at least 40pts total, you just need the rest of the guys to step up on offense.

Man, we are one back-up point guard and competent big man next to Boogie away from just being plain good.

The backup point guard thing really bothers me because it just is so obvious. Credible NBA writes like Nate Duncan have said this the whole summer and they are right. You just can't expect Temple at the 1 and Mclemore at the 2 to succeed. That's why I was so perplexed by us not dealing with Milwaukee and trading Mclemore for either Carter-Williams or a secound rounder to make room for Farmar.

On the bright side however, this team is very good. And once Collison returns we should be fine with having either him or Lawson playing back up point as long as they stay healthy.

One of the key parts of the game was when we were up nine in the third and we got two straight stops and two poor shots in transition by Gay and Cousins I think. Right after that the Spurs really tightened up on D, culminating in Khawai stealing Bens soul(seriously I hope that sequence didnt just set Ben back to rock bottom mentally, he had a great stint in the first half).

The initial write up is spot on. They really do need a viable, perimeter threat to pair with Cousins. Gay is not that in my opinion. Maybe Lawson can somewhat turn into that . Either way...they played well and this is a learning experience. They will continue to be in games if they continue that defensive effort and overall energy. Fun game to watch

Might have to be a concern until next season when Bogdan comes over.

We Hung in there but in the end the talent and chemistry gap was just too much to overcome.
Kudos to Rudy for forcing Leonard into tough shots. It's been a while since I saw him that engaged on D.
In the end the difference was our sometimes sloppy and rushed play and our inability to hit open shots.
Maybe we can get away with that versus some teams not aiming for 50+wins.

Is Casspi HURT? Or is he out of the rotation?

I thought we outplayed them for about 65% of the game but Kawhi is a superstar there's zero doubting it the guy is a freak two way player and he with the Spurs bench just ended up out smarting us towards the end. I thought Cousins D on LMA was pretty amazing completely locked him down looked like....Kawhi defending Ben.

If there is any serious way we can get Taj Gibson next to DMC (Bulls could use Casspi if he's out of the rotation) I think we have to do it we need a finisher in the paint with all the attention on the other 4 guys (Ty/DC/AA/Gay) another option could be Rashaun Holmes from Philly if they want Ben he's like a way bigger and more talented T-Rob without the supremely low IQ. WCS looks like he regressed he just looks completely lost out there I don't trust him and KK while he was ok is just a garbage fit.

An athletic PF (even Faried as much I am not a fan) who can finish around the rim is what we do need next to Cousins/Lawson.

Koufos wasn't bad from my point of view. It's the Ben McLemore effect - there are so blatant mistakes (fumbles, point blank misses), that I have the tendency to be more negative towards him, than he deserves. His defense and rebounding was a huge factor. The Spurs may be the only matchup, where KK has the quickness advantage. :D

Willie just looks horrible out there. Like a rookie shying away from the headlights. Imagine and DMC + Myles Turner frontcourt instead of DMC + Koufos.......:(

Koufos played well. No problems on that front.
Willie, OTOH, is really looking lost.
He won't try anything on O (won't even fake anything on O...) unless he's got stuck with the ball with no options.

As for Casspi's zero minutes - I sure hope that changes in the following games.
I love his energies, and his 3pt scoring would have helped tonight.
Beyond that - Omri must have done SOMETHING right in his 8.5 minutes (at least synergy-wise),
to be at the top of our roster in DefRtg, NetRtg and PIE.
(Not just currently, after sitting-out the L tonight. He was top of the list at the end of game 1)

I'm not sure who we should sit-out to make the PT, but I'm sure it's possible.

Why are people harping on Kofous? The Cousins/Kofous tandem bullied the hell out of Aldridge/Gasol. So much in fact that Gasol only played 21 minutes and never even got back in the game in the 4th quarter because Pop knew we we're bullying them with our two bigs. I don't care if Kofous missed a flip or two, he chased away one of the best big men in the league.

Afflalo did a good job keep Anderson invisible all game. Ginobili and Mills were both inefficient as well.

Gay may have shot 30% but he still scored 17 on 10 shots thanks to his aggressiveness in getting to the line and almost fouling Kawhi out.

Cousins was just a straight up MVP candidate this game. I don't ever want to hear another trade rumor about him again. The guy lays it out there on the line for this city and is loyal as ****.

Sadly, the game was lost by the bench. If you look at the +/- for the game. Their bench destroyed our bench.

One of the coolest moments of the game was when Patty Mills tried that crossover and Temple jumped right in front of him and stopped him in his tracks. Got Cousins off his seat. Got Joerger off his seat clapping and it got a smart basketball crowd up on their feet and cheering. The fans appreciate it because that's not god given talent, that's just pure effort. Something we haven't seen for years. I have a feeling this team is going to take on a bring your lunch pail to work, blue collar type mentality this year. I just hope the effort lasts and they don't give up if they stumble across a losing streak.

Agreed on the Koufos harping. It is frustrating when he misses the chippies, needs to make them or more of them but he was good in other areas. I do like the rotation of Koufos followed by a Tolliver for his spot minutes to space the floor although his 3 point shot hasn't quite hit during these 2 games.

I think Joerger is doing a tremendous job piecing together the lineups as he has lots of useable parts. I'm sure Casspi will get his time, somehow, someway. It's going to be the same when DC comes back. A guard is going to have to sit.

I just logged on to post this very thing and you beat me to it. I watched Temple make that play - I clapped and hollered WOW - and simultaneously saw my team's head coach go nuts with approval - up off his seat clapping energetically and enthusiastically. That was the culture change in a nutshell I think.
