Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Yep, the title runs through Sacto, let me tell ya. :p

We be saavy though -- how do you take an embarrassingly close victory over a team that has lost 13 in a row and make it feel good? Come so close to choking the unchokable that it requires a buzzer beater. Then the relief alone makes it all good.

Artest ( C- ) -- grabbed some early boards and beat up rookie Jeff Green. But I am not sure he was eer truly focused onthis game4. There was a teamwide malaise that I think naturally results when you are facing a team that hasn't won since 2007 int he midst of a lost season. Got into foul trouble in third but that wasn't really muhc of a problme for us one way or the other. Came back though to miss shot after shot as we struggled to give the game away in the early 4th. Did finally force up and hit a shot in the final two minutes -- you just knew he was going to take it no matter what, just a question whether we got lucky or not. Tonight we did. Ron is frequently delusional of course, but I doubt he himself would have much to say for his game this time out.

Moore ( C ) -- open inside and out early, but not competing on the glass. I could almost stop this grade after that sentence because....Mikki Moore played a LOT in theis game. He racked up minutes like KG. And in those lot of minutes I am struggling, seriously struggling, to think of one other thing he did of note the whole game. He was outboarded by the Wilcox/Collison/thomas crew, rarely scored after the intial push, and just sort of took up space.

Miller ( B- ) -- put up solid across the baord numbers in a game which did not really feel that solid. His early highlight was hitting three that would have to be termed "big" as much as any shot would be big in a game like this, to break a 2nd quarter Seattle run and push us back out to being up 9. Thought at the time it might be Seattle's one and only run at being respectable. Little did I know at the time that we were going to get in a dogfight with the worst team in the game for the entire second half. Was agin the only King even pretending to rebound, and the irony of us being a team depending on Brad Miller as our rebounding rock is rich beyong belief. Was missing his shots, including a baseline jumper late that helped keep the Sonics in it. And then earned hiself a nice big 'ole grade reduction here for doing the big n' stupid in one last desperate attempt to let the Sonics steal it in the last minute, getting in a scrum with Kurt Thomas with us up 4, and then getting mad because a foul was not called for him and so wildly swinging his arms and intentionally fouling Thomas -- letting the Sonics go down to the other end wiht the clock stopped and cut the lead back to 2. Could easily have been a technical too, which frankly would have served him right for not being able to hold his water, as usual, and setting us up to lose the game minus the Martin heroics.

Martin ( A- ) -- this is an interesting grade for all the obvious reasons, but also for this one: Kevin Martin was sitting on a C when he returned to the game in the 4th quarter. He had scored points, but he had not played a very good game. If you had looked up "bad 20pt game" in the dictionary, there would have been a picture of what he was producing. Was not able to get not much early against Durant, until finally spalshing in a wide open three in the second. But then went right back to the struggle again and at one point was 3 - 10 and struggling. He scored on a couple of very questionable touch fouls, but those were gifts. And then of course everything changed in the last couple of minutes, and so the question becomes just how far can/should this grade rise because of it. Hit a late three courtesy of Mike, took a charge form the wildly out of control Durant (Kevin had tried to do that several times before during the game with mixed results) and you just knew the Sonics were going to blow the inbounds play that sank them with 20 seconds to go, them down 2, and us with only 1 second left. Kevin made a great one handed catch and finish under the hoop, but that just doesn't happen unless yoou are a team on a 13 game losing streak just finding ways to lose. But Kevin still had more advaneture left -- actually came down after being fouled a few seconds later and only made 1 of 2 FTs to open the door again, and damn if the Sonics did not step in and hit the huge three to tie it that threatened to turn Kevin = hero into Kevin = choker. But all that ended up doing was setting the table for Kevin = hero again as he hit the buzzer beating shot from the corner to win the game and send the Sonics to 0-14 in January. So now for the grade...played a mostly crap game until it mattered. But when it mattered he (and Mike) hit all the shots. Final numbers look good, so going all the way to A- from C. Almost unjustified for half a quarter of work, but when you are the man down the stretch, funny things happen to your grade.

Bibby ( B- ) -- another King who sleepwalked through most of this game, but came up with big plays whenever he was jarred out of lethargy by a sense of actual danger. In the third was the guy to finally hit the jumper to break a danger point for us in the third when the Sonics had it down to three with a chance to cut it but could not after a long string of scrappy play and missed shots. Mike also tipped a ball out to Kevin for a breakway hoop after Wilcox missed the FT to tie it with 6 minutes to go. Was also big down the stretch, when after hitting only 1 of 2 FTs at the 4 minute mark to leave the game tied, he came back down two possesssions later to hit a 3 to put us back up 2 and followed it up with another hit as well as setting Kevin up for a three.

Salmons ( B ) -- scored easily off the bench, including getting a breakaway to close the first quarter, and then followed with comfortable drives and jumpers. Made several big defensive plays to stave off Seattle pushes at the moments when we were most threatened. Throguh the early 4th, was actually playing a better game than Keivn, but left the game in favor of Kevin on a sour note as he dribbed the ball off his leg with 6-7 miinutes to go. Came back in in the final seconds to almost play the goat (or at least join Kevin and Brad) as Damien Wilkens hit the desperation three pointer to tie the game even though it was exactly the only shot we had to prevent. Still a solid bench performance this time out. Playing nobody of course, and perhaps benefitting from half our team barely putting forth an effort, thus leaving him a chance to play his own game.

Udrih ( B- ) -- came in off the bench smoothly knocking down shots, and after going quiet for a long stretch, teamed with Cisco on back to back threes as our response to the Sonics taking the lead from us in the early 4th. Had some hustle plays on defense (not all successful). Also threw a really terrible pass for a TO leading to a turnover.

Cisco ( C ) -- not one of Cisco's better games, but hit a big timely three in the early 4th to help stave off the embarrassing defeat. Came in off the bench missing two forces. May have been too close. Weren't threes. Gave us nothing in the third, but hit several big shots when we were in trouble in the early 4th. Nothing to write home about, but like Kevin, John and Mike, made timely contributions rather than spectacular ones.

Hawes ( INC ) -- back home in front of family and friends, looked like this might finally be a game in which he got some real time after he got in to start the secndnd period. But unfrotunately we screwed around so long that we almost got beat, and Reggie's confidence in anyone under 25 in those situations is almost nil. After fumbling a ball hit his first shot in ugly fashion -- looked like he missed it so bad he hit it, with the shot banging so hard off the galss that they shuold have checked for cracks. Second hit was better though, finally a nice step through post move. Did nothing else, and that was it for his game.

Jones ( INC ) -- in for the final moments of the first half and was overpowered on a drive by Durant

Douby ( INC ) -- came in for the final 30 seconds of the third quarter and immediately traveled to give the Sonics the ball back with another chance to take the lead going into the 4th. A chance they politely refused of course. Did not return.

Theus ( ) --

this game didn't deserve a winner and it wasn't even basketball. If it wasn't sad - it would be funny but I am laughing so I don't have to cry.

F for the NBA - for allowing such teams to play in the league

A win does feel good no matter how it comes.

The Sonics lose their 14th consecutive in heartbreak fashion and the Kings get a win on this road trip.

Still too many turnovers and lack of rebounding for anyone's liking though, they got to work on that.

These are the sort of oxymoron wins--this is a team that normally a good team, or even a mediocre team, on a normal day would/should blow out. To compound matters, we nearly ended their 13-game losing streak. However, there is something to be said about clutchness and game winners building confidence within the team, and I think Kevin Martin deserves a lot of credit for the way he's played--without him, who knows what would have happened. But based on the way we've played recently, from Artest's antics to making games out of supposedly blowout wins, I have to question the direction of this team. But I guess I'll worry about that later.

when You are 9-35 - there is no such thing

Sonics, played hard, stayed competitive and got one step closer to where they want to be

try living in NYC.

the major difference is that we should have no expectation of a high classed, well orchestrated and well played game. We aren't good. I don't think there is a fan of the Kings that doesn't know we aren't that good. Therefore a win feels good to me whether it is played ugly or not. It is especially good on the road no matter who we play.

The Knicks have the highest payroll in the league. They deserve to be chewed up.

No. I no longer read this forum after a win until the next day. It's not worth the aggravation. Otherwise I don't know what you mean.

Check out Mozart's post on how Kings are going to contend for western conference champion once bibby and artest return.

Do the Kings do this every time? When there’s a bad team we play bad, but when we’re going to play a playoff/great opponent, we actually compete.

Keeps it exciting, doesn't it? ;) Whether we're playing the Pistons or the Sonics, you never know who's going to win!

I think it's mostly a "bad team" thing. If you look back to, say, Dec. '95, we were doing it then, too. Lose a game to some total punching bag of a team, then thoroughly outrage Charles Barkley (who never seems to have forgiven us) by beating his Suns.

But I'm sure we'll get back to playing consistently good basketball... some day.

It's the "Arco effect," IMO. We rarely beat good teams on the road, but our team seems to be a completely different animal at Arco.

Grades are up to the grader of course. It makes it difficult when one player does something sooo spectacular in one minute of the game that you remember it for a long long time and that these plays were the ultimate deciders of the game - the ultimate clutch shots.

For instance, 10-15 years ago when Reggie Miller scored 11 points in about 15 seconds and the team won by 1 point. How do you grade that if he scored 11 points in the game? That's kind of where this game stands in grading Martin. I am very happy I didn't miss the last minute of the game because we saw an individual pull off not only an incredible two shots but an extra three pointer thrown in for good measure. It turned a sloppy game into something memorable.

This is in part why I don't like reading these notes right after a win. Almost immediately there is a comment about how bad this game was. In my book, I would have kicked myself if I hadn't survived the first 47 minutes to see the dramatic ending. Have some people lost there appreciation for unusual individual excellence? The way I view things in my version of fanhood, this was a spectacular game to see because I needed to watch the first 47 minutes to truly appreciate the last minute. The contrast made it even more special.

I think there will be other Martin heroics but this is the first real big one for me to remember because it was a series of heroics.

Buzzer beaters aren't necessarily unique. Not at all. What Martin did was VERY unique. I simply cannot coldly turn off the excitement that Martin gave me.

Now, I suspect the next game will be poorly played. Anything different than that is noteworthy.
