Don't Make Me Use The Bat
And so another loss...hence, as promised there will be a theme. Its Super Bowl Sunday...we were in Canada...so something along one of those lines methinks.
Alright, so let's do the football theme, and why not celebrate a tradition nearly as famous as the game itself:
Theme = Super Bowl Ads
Boxscore
Casspi ( C- ) -- another start, but still struggling to get shots, and to hit them when he does. Got out on the break, but missed the finish. Got his only hit of the night down inside. Turned it over on the pass triggering a Raptors break, and was too weak containing Hedo early -- the defense in fact would cost him most of his minutes to Noc this afternoon. Back in and traveled trying to escape Turk. Had several boards in the second, then got just clocked by a Bargnani elbow of all people trying to clear space after grabbingthe d-board. Big clean smack. Broken jaws suck -- I should know -- and that could do it. Back in with a d-board late in the third, and the rebounding was really his contribution this time out. Not sure if the blow to the head had anything to do with his limited second half minutes, or whether the lack of offense/defense did. Either way minutes were limited.

Greene ( C+ ) -- the Donte at PF thing did not work this time as Bosh killed us, and it got bad enough that we did not even start him after half. Missed the early three, then another long jumper, got overpowered by Bosh early, left early in favor of JT. No impact after returning either, and then Bosh resumed beating him up. As mentioned lost the starting position after half, but was back in when JT picked up his 4th in the middel of the third quarter. Drove and got his shot blocked. Was not even being guarded by Bargnani in the third who was basically just sitting back there in a constant soft double on Reke. Donte wasn't doing a good job (or any job) of taking advantage of that, and it inspired us to call a timeout that triggered Donte's highlight of the night. Coming out of the timeout Reke hit Donte not once, not two times, but three straight times for threes, and Donte hit all three of them as we caugth back up and took the lead. 3-3 in the space of about 3 minutes. A couple of minutes later the newfound need to guard him close got him fouled behind the 3pt line, but he only hit 1 of 3 of the FTs. Was trying to go into the post in the early 4th, and yelled at Casspi when Casspi's man was able to double Donte because of the spacing, although truth be told I don't know where Omri was supposed to take him unless we were going to clear out the entire side. Got the o-baord at the 4:30 mark and got fouled, but again only hit 1 of 2 and finished the night 2-5 from the line. The grade he got here is almost entirely about that three point barrage unleasehed out of the timeout in the late 3rd. The rest of the game he was 1-7 and got run over by Bosh.

Hawes ( B ) -- certainly had no fear of Bargnani out there, and gee that's a shocker. Neither would Calista Flockhart. Went right into the post for the move over Bargnani. Waded in for and o-reb and finish -- something he did a lot of today. Missed the open three off the kickout from Reke, but finished with a solid 6pt 4reb first quarter. Came back in and was on the o-boards again with another layup. Beat by Bosh on the missed FT rebound to close the half -- Bosh got it, laid it in and Toronto goes in up 3. After the break a turnover on the attempted pass to Reke in the post, then a little quick post move on Bargnai. Blew a little putback on the o-glass again. Jumper on the kick from Reke. Will get credit for a follow when a ball bounced off Bosh's hands in front of him into the hoop on the "closest offensive player" rule. Got a block on Bargnani. Missed a jumper, got the o-board, sneaky little flip follow, missed it and got fouled. took a lot of shots, and the numbers say he shot poorly. Numbers also say he rebounded well. All of that is a little deceptive because what it really was was him just being a) active on the offensive glass; and b) not being able to finish consistently...the first time. So a shot would go up, his or somebody else's, and he went crashing in there to get the board and the follow. As such his shots were mostly off of o-boards, and not terribly disruptive. Helpful to have a guy that active on the o-boards, but that also meant that he wasn't controlling the d-glass very well. Solid game, but a bit unusual in its structure for Spencer.

Martin ( B- ) -- decent game including a hot streak highlight, but marred by our shooting guard's continuing inability to shoot. Missed a jumper off the screen to start the game, drew a foul on Hedo, weak foul on the move and hit 1 of 2 FTs as he had some struggles there again on the night. Casual barely grazed the iron three. missed the jumper courtesy of the Reke kickout. secveral early rebounds. Scooped up a loose ball and raced full court + hit and took a hard fall. Hit 1 of 2 FTs again. Tried to fly in for seceral offensive boards, but failed. Tried to draw a foul on the drive rather than just shoot it. Drive on the break and blew the layup. Could have been the crusher again with the ongoing confidence issues, but next time down was again in the open court adn pulled up to hit the jumper insead, and then a third time down on the break as the old Raptors' traditional "defense" popped up, drew the foul from Hedo going to the rim. Backdoor cut courtesy of Hawes, steal picking off a pass and full court layup with 30 seconds to go in the half. Tried to flop on defense back the other way, sending Hedo to the line to close the half. Missed jumper again to start the third, then a second jumper. Drive trying to draw the foul but still able to finsih. Missed another jumper. Drew a foul on the move. Missed a three on a kick from Reke. Fourth started with 1 of 2 Fts. Missed a corner three. Missed another jumper -- you know, as much as I generally advocate emulating my awesomeness as a key to success in this world, borrowing my jumpshot is generally not where I would start. Finally hit a three at the 3:15 mark. Did his foul drawing jerk along the baseline at the 1:30 mark and hit both FTs. Obviously a vast improvement on the last game. Got his points, helped on the glass, and even had a few minutes of impact basketball there down the stretch of the first half. But took a ton of shots to get those points and devolved into missed jumper after missed jumper after the break. Ended up another subpar shooting night at 7-18, and of course another loss as we are now 2-16 in his games this season.

Evans ( C ) -- started this one off abusing Jarret Jack, who is a pretty good defender, but as the game wore on again encountered a wall of double teams and guys lurking in the paint which our shooters only sporadically punished. Pushed him toward offensive passivity and he only got off 8 shots (+5 FTs, but he seemed on his way to a career high in assists until the offense sputtered late and he was forced into inefficient attempts to drive through 2 or 3 guys at a time late. Started off the game with a great full court open court take, blocked Jack on the break, then quick blow by Jack along the baseline, then back in and fouled. Beatuiful behind the back drive and dish off to Jason on which Jason got fouled. Nice drive and kick to Noc, steal on defense, hit the technical FT on the defensive 3 second call, pass picked off kicking out of the post, dish on the drive to Casspi who got fouled. Probably had half a dozen assists blown by teammates in the first half alone as he kicked and kicked and they bricked and bricked. Called on a carry on a drive. In the third forced a drive over Bargnani on the double -- he wasn't even trying to guard Donte. Led to our timeout and the resulting sequence where three staihgt times Reke kicked it to Donte, and Donte punished the Raptors for sagging wiht three straihgt bombs. Unfortunately the only real spell of that all night as otherwise we wre 2-11 from 3pt land. Little forced baseline jumper. Steal on Jack. Stepped out for the long jumper. Terrible lost control pass trying to alley oop it to Donte, and so high that even if we really do trade for Thabeet he would not have been able to get up there high enough to snag it. Then got it stripped driving the lane for the bakc to back TOs befor esitting down to rest for the rest of the quarter. Forced the drive at the 3:45 mark and just too much traffic = no hope. Long missed jumper in desperation late. No assists in the 4th, and I think only 2 pts after half as the Raptors just collapsed 2,3,4 guys back into the paint and said to the rest of our team, yo scrubs, you are going to have to beat us. And we did not.
