Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Peja ( D ) -- no other way to put it than he took the night off. Just really looked disinterested from the beginning. Really did not matter for us -- we jumped on them from the very start of the game and there was no moment where I yelled at Peja through the TV (except maybe for one incredible wussout on a baseline rebound in the second half). Probably could have done better if we needed him, but really gave us nothing tonight.
Webber ( A ) -- oh, I could quibble here. Rebounding was not huge. He was moving well on help defense, but didn't actually seem to effect any of the Pacers' shots -- they were making them right over him. But the fact of the matter is that he just flat out dominated this game from the moment he stepped on the floor, and he looked great physically while doing so. Pacers had nobody remotely on his planet skillwise on the frontline, and Chris scored inside and out more or less at will. Also went up for a couple of big slams, including an alley oop where he pulled himself all the way up + luckily did not get a T. This knee thing is odd -- looks like he was inhabiting an entirely different body than the one he was in 48 hrs ago against New Orleans. If tonight were your only evidence, you would call the surgery a rousing success and have big hope for the future.
Miller ( A ) -- like Webber, simply met with no resistance inside tonight. Was smart from the very start of the game, and drove right to the front of the rim time and again for easy conversions. Also dominated the glass. A welcome sight, albeit against an NBDL frontline. This was just a men against boys night fro Webb and Miller, and they just destroyed the Pacers frontline.
Christie ( B+ ) -- was a big part of our passing attack tonight as we carved the Pacers up, but early on was missing everything he put up. But even while struggling on offense he was checking Fred Jones on defense and simply took him out of the game. Fred has had a couple of big games since the mass suspensions, but tonight against an elite defender he looked very much like a 11th man trying to score against an All-Defensive team member. As the game went along Doug got stronger and stronger with his shot as well -- it was actually Peja who turned the tables and got Doug going this game with some good passes rather than the other way around tonight.
Bibby ( C+ ) -- played a poor first half -- not only missing his shots, but getting burned left and right by Jamaal Tinsley. Came back in the third quarter and put together a nice quarter -- Webb and Miller got him a series of open looks, and he knocked them down. Also continued his superior boardwork this year, grabbing 5 more.
BJax ( B+ ) -- came in a little wild in the second quarter and was missing his shots -- in the first half it was the frontcourt that dominated, while the entire backcourt struggled. But was all over the boards from the beginnning of the game. Really is one of the most remarkable rebounders in the league at his size. Came in for a short, strong stint in the second half before sitting down next to Bibby for the rest of the game once the lead got up to 30.
Songaila ( B ) -- functioned well as a roleplayer in the regular rotation -- got on the boards, hit easy shots. Was exposed a bit when we went with the all-deep bench for the final quarter as Darius was playing out of position as a too-small center with no interior defense, and was forced into an uncomfortable role as kind of a goto guy.
Barnes ( D ) -- game might have been too easy for us, because it looked like Matt's focus was off tonight and he fell back into his bad habits with sloppiness and turnovers. Played most of his minutes with the garbagetime guys, and had little positive impact.
Ostertag ( B ) -- came in for a short second half stint with the game already decided, and did the things he kind of does -- grabbed some boards, stood tall in the middle, displayed his bad hands, and again made a nice little assist on the interior. At this point I've pretty much come to the copnclusion that Tag is really not a bad passer at all, and it was just Sloan's system in Utah denying him passing opportunities that more than anything else kept his assist numbers so low over his career.
Evans ( B ) -- nice energetic run during garbagetime. Nothing dominant, but looked the best of all of the scrubs.
Daniels ( C ) -- mostly invisible during his garbagetime minutes. Did not make mistakes.
Martin ( C ) -- still making a lot of mistakes and pressing. Threw in a nice quick drive to the front of the rim.

Adelman ( A ) -- just such an easy game that its hard to even see how any coach could have screwed it up. But Rick had the team ready to step on the Pacers from the beginning of the game, and we came out in the third quarter and really finished them off. Strategy to attack through our dominant big men played out perfectly. And with our deep bench playing the final 8-9 minutes, you really couldn't have scripted a better, or easier, victory for us.

Hard game to play - harder to grade. It was clear that effort would depend on the opponent's performance. We did enough.

Bibby (C) Got beat bad by Tinsley (but Tinsley's been penatrating teams defenses pretty well lately plus Mike's playing with a banged up leg). Cut to the basket to make up for his off shooting.

Christe (B) Ran the offense tonight. Hustled and rebounded.

Stojakovic (D+) Forced some shots tonight. Looked like he was looking to pass more than usual tonight (nice passes though. Shooting hand bothering him maybe?). Getting outrebounded by the guards. Didn't get his usual pass from Doug, but Webb hooked him up tonight.

Webber (A) Pretty dominant on offense tonight, came out and made 8/9 in the first. He was a pest on the perimeter knocking the ball away. Legs looked pretty good tonight. On one play when Bibby had that break away steal, Webber ran like I haven't seen him run in awhile (If he didn't get the ball knocked out of the way that would have been showtime). Had 22 in the first half.

Miller (A) Was also dominant on offense tonight, slashing to the basket. Had a nice play when he got knocked down on D he came streaking back into to lane to catch a pass from Bibby and draw a foul.

Jackson (B) Same old thing for Bobby. Probaby the best rebounder at 5'11.

Garbage time players:
-----------------------------------------------------
Barnes (D) Looked kind of out of control tonight, but mostly in garbage time (so maybe he shouldn't get an INC).

Songalia (C-) Active on the boards (was part of that flurry of offensive boards in the 3rd).

Martin (C) I liked that 'slashing into the lane fade away floater' move.

Ostertag (B) For giving his shoes to that kid (I think it was him) and filling the lane so Fred Jones didn't get a highlight dunk.

Evans (B) Shot pretty well, had a Gerald Wallace moment when he broke away for that steal (that could have lead to a break away dunk) but was fouled.

Daniels (C+) Nice hustle going into the stands.

Overall team grade: A They got the job done; they didn't humiliate the Pacers while doing it; they didn't lose focus.

A for webber, he was great. the way he had it going tonight, i was shocked when he missed a shot. i LOVED that dunk, and i too as surprised he didn't get a T, damn he was up there forever :D

peja looked like crap out there, i agree with the D.

bibby was alright, B- i give him the bump up to a B- because of the rebounding. i swear he's outrebounding peja on the season LOL ( peja is averaging 4 per game, bibby 3.5 ok so i was wrong, but damn thats close!!!!) peja should be ashamed that a PG who is like 8 inches shorter is only averaging half a rebound less then his 6'10'' self!!!!

christie looked good, B passed nice, played great D on fred jones.

miller A he was great all around. double double *6* offensive boards ( NICE!) and some great jams.

b-jax was b-jax. tolbert was marveling at his rebounding too, saying he must be one of the best reboudning PG's in the league. and at 5'11 to boot :D

great game by the kings. i LOVED it!

Actually Bibby is at 4.3 to Peja's 4.0 (actually probably about 4.4 to Peja's 3.9 after tonight.

But on the inspirational side, Peja should still maintain his narrow lead over our other two guards, although per 48 I'm pretty sure Bibby, Doug and Bobby are all outrebounding him right now.

Getting to be a real concern -- 16 games into the season now, and no real signs of board life from Peja.

I liked Evans better than Barnes (who is back into his garbage mode) even in the preseason. Evans seems more athletic and technically more polished player than Barnes, I don't understand why Adelman doesn't give him real minutes.

opps i must have looked at the wrong thing. either way, that is PATHETIC out of peja.

can someone give him a quick kick in the butt to make him rebound???? or get someone in here to make him rebound?!?!?! geez, i'd almost like to see peja on the spurs just to see pop light his butt off for not rebounding.

come on peja your KILLING ME ( and the kings, we must rank last in the league in offensive boards allowed) !!!! rebound the freaking ball!!!!!!!!

Barnes is bigger, a better rebounder, and has better passing skills. He can do more for you, and has actually been good for us on about 12 of the 16 games or so.

Evans is pretty much just a pure OG. Think is clearly ahead of Martin at this point though.

Have you even met Bobby in person? 6'1? Maybe in heels ;)
Thanks, Reina...

I now have a mental image of Bobby in 5" stilletos... running down the court at top speed!

:D

This is the most intensity that I have seen from the team this year. It seemed like they were really fighting for the boards tonight. We can't really expect Peja to get any offensive boards because all he does is stand out by the three, but he should at least get some defensive boards especially since he guards guys who play around the basket more.

Some of the things that i feel worth mentioning would be 4 steals by Webber. Also Peja had a really nice drive to the basket, was fouled on it but was really great to see Peja go for it that way!

Its good to see Maurice Evans and Flash on the floor. I think that Evans should be used more often and not just in junk time.

I dont know whats wrong with Peja's rebounding ... we said he sucked last season ... but look at this season so far ... not good at all ...
Even his 6.3 average from last yr ... would be huge these days HAHA ...

ah Peja, Peja ...

Barnes is taller, but only about 5 lbs heavier than Evans and to me Evans appears to have a better leaping ability, so I'm not exactly sure just how much Barnes is better at rebounding. His shooting has been mostly pathetic (unless he is completely wide open, but I could hit those too) and his passing is not that much better. He does hustle and run the break pretty hard, but Evans seems to be doing the same and is more athletic... I don't get it.
Maybe Barnes is better sub for Pedja, but then should'nt Evans get a shot as well replacing Christie?

Limited minutes for Evans of course, but going into tonight's game Barnes was averaging about twice as many boards as Evans per 48 (10.2 to 5.3) and actually wasn't that far behind Miller's 11.2 He is an EXCELLENT rebounder for a swingman.

And just as critically, he can play the whole game -- he is a good passer, good dribbler, looks to make plays (where he makes most of his mistakes) and has even run a little PG this year. he's got the size to back up Peja, but the sort of well rounded non-offensively minded game to fill in admirably for Doug as well (those minutes are few and far between thouogh because of Bobby's presence).

Evans has looked good at times this year, but his game is still basically athletic scorer. Nice, but Barnes' utility-man game and larger size make him a better fit for more situations -- our team has never had much room for specialists unless they are really really good at their specialty (Peja).

You mean, you didn't before?? Maybe it was just me.

I, however, now have an image of our starting point guard and his midget replacement.

i know it's a team effort and all
but i would very much love for peja to be the hero, just one night.
it's about time he does something.
