Don't Make Me Use The Bat
reggiepuppy_sweater.jpg

See the man above? He's a beautiful beautiful man when his rebounding dander is up, and he put on a ridiculous show that let's be clear here, was nearly 100% the reason we climbed back into this and made a game of it. Games without Cousins are barely any fun to watch anymore, given that you know the result going in -- we haven't won one in two years without the big guy. But watching Reggie come in and hustle and scrap and go nuts one more time (he's 34, there are only a certain number of these games left in those legs) was a hoot. And oh, having him give quotes like this afterward show why its useful to have old hardnosed vets populating your bench:

"Well, I ain't no rookie or nothing. I have 13 years in the league," Evans said. "They shoot just like I shoot and they play defense just like I play it. They are human just like me. There is no sense in being scared."

Hope Nik was listening.

Gay ( C+ ) -- scored 20pts in this one on a night when we probably needed a little more. But even when he was flowing in the early game, they just never felt like they were terribly impactful points. And the Grizzlies were of course paying all sorts of attention to him, and so what little impact he was having disappeared into invisibility and inefficiency late. Had 8 points in the early going, and once Gasol was out of the game went right at Koufos. Added an assist to Ben after a nice sideline save by the kid and was generally our best guy through the first. Not really being featured when he came back in the 2nd, and sloppily dribbled it off his toes when he did get it. Did hit a real tough double teamed, fouled and falling down +1 at the free throw line with us down 21, and followed it with several other high degree of difficulty hits to help us at least wake up and whittle the lead just a bit. Had 15 points at half, but hounded by Tony Allen most of the time he was held to only 5 second half points, none of them important. Worse, when eh did show up, it was mostly to try to force action into heavy traffic. Late in the game he tried a drive and kick to Ben, and threw what would have been a great pass if Ben's hands grew out of his ankles instead of his wrists. Was important to keep things from being even worse in the first half, but after half had vey little to do with us making our run.--Brick

Thompson ( B- ) -- Jason Thompson did not fill up the box score tonight. Let's just lay that out there at the very beginning. He only managed two points and two rebounds and he fouled out in 20 minutes. That's an F, right? Wrong. In the first half, JT was the only guy we had out there who could slow down Randolph. He consistently denied Randolph deep post position, and ZBo shot 2-5 against him, one of those hits - and to be fair one of those misses - coming on own rebounds that JT was unable to defend because Randolph's original move pushed him under the basket. There's not much to be done if the refs let you bang your defender practically out of bounds, but I don't see anybody defending it much better than JT. On top of denying ZBo domination, JT made no fewer than seven help defense rotations in his first 9 minute stretch. His positioning was impeccable, and although there were three makes on those helps (one following a block call trying to draw a charge on Randolph when they had switched Hollins over) there were also two difficult shots forced and missed and two pass-outs forced. Perhaps the best indication of how good JT's first half was is that we were down 2 when he went out, and we were down 16 (and had been as much as 21 down) when he finally came back in after inexplicably being benched for the entire second quarter with only two fouls. JT's first stint in the second half was no different - he started the half by setting a perfect down screen to get BenMac open in the lane for an easy jumper, later tapped out a rebound (not credited) to Ben to start a breakaway, made a great knifing pass into the lane to hit Reggie for an easy dunk, made three more help stops, and held Randolph to 0-2 before being touched up with two questionable fouls and sent back to the bench with the Kings +6 in his stint. Unfortunately, his play in the fourth quarter was not so stellar. Due to Hollins' ejection he was forced to cover Gasol, who went straight at him. Gasol started with a crazy hook in the lane, then one possession later hit a deep jumper that JT had to leave him for in order to cut off the baseline drive. Then two cheesy fouls in quick succession were called and JT was done. So yeah, it doesn't show up in the boxscore, but JT was one of our best players out there tonight, and was limited in his minutes purely by - to my eye - FOUR iffy fouls in the second half. --Capt.

Hollins ( D ) -- So, yea. I don’t know who that guy in a Ryan Hollins jersey was in San Antonio, but this was a much more recognizable Ryan Hollins game. And you know what? This sort of performance in a limited bench role wouldn’t have been horrible, but as a starter on a team lacking interior size? Not ideal. Here’s some good. Hollins was actively challenging shots at the rim. His man-to-man defense was also OK. He played some very good defense on Zach Randolph for a stretch in the first half, but Randolph scored anyway. That’s just basketball, I can’t really fault his effort there. He did (sort of) spark two Kings mini-runs. The first after he made a terrible offensive play with a weak dribble handoff that was stolen, but hustled back for a chase down block. There was a noticeable energy boost after that, so good on you, Ryan. At one point he got tangled up with Vince Carter and the absurd double technical foul was called. It was just bad officiating. Then, at the beginning of the third quarter, Hollins fouled Gasol on a drive to the basket. Gasol played through the whistle to try and get the And1, Hollins played through the whistle to prevent the And1 (a VERY minor push in the back) and one of the officials not named Joey Crawford called Hollins for his second technical foul on that push. Two technical fouls, and Ryan Hollins’ night was over. And in a weird, twisted way, the Kings (mainly Reggie Evans) responded. The Kings outscored the Grizzlies in the second half, and maybe, just maybe we can give Hollins a little bit of credit for that? And even with that small hint of credit, I can’t give Hollins anything above a D for tonight. Good energy, good hustle, got screwed by the officiating more than once, but an absolutely empty stat line filling in for DeMarcus Cousins just isn’t going to cut it. Get well soon, Boogie.

McLemore ( A- ) -- Ben started the game with 3 misses. First a contested 3-pointer followed by an open midrange jumper and finally a difficult layup. Immediately thereafter McLemore fought to keep the ball from slipping out, passed it to Gay and got it back for an easy layup. Beautiful move! Not getting any touches in 4 min, which needs to change, McLemore flashed his amazing speed running the floor, finally getting the pass, and slammed the ball in. Beautiful. Following fast break, Ben brought the ball up and provided a perfect pass for Rudy Gay for layup. Going a bit unnoticed gives a bad pass to Landry creating a TO. McLemore tends to disappear for periods, but it is not so much because of him. It’s more like his teammates seem to forget him and his abilities. So many possessions go without him touching the ball. When he finally gets it, he has that fast silky release for 3 points. Third quarter went for Ben getting just few touches. A bit strange that Collison was forcing shots when Ben was open and shooting better than Collison. Yes, Ben turned the ball over, but still. In the 4th quarter Ben became more dominant. He is so fast on the fast breaks and finishes with authority. So, in summary, a good game for Ben. Good defense, good scoring from the field. Underutilized shooting potential, but still good stats line in scoring. Maybe should have reduced more for the TO’s, but I enjoyed his flashes too much.--Kingston

Collison ( C+ ) -- Begins game guarding Mike Conley, gives up early 3 by not keeping on him. Conley’s defense not letting DC get where he wants on offense; DC fast break kick of speed to basket but pops out then missed both FT; Hollins rebounds and makes quick outlet to DC on break, splits defenders at key and in for layup; then in traffic goes down the key for entertaining half-hook layup for 2; not getting free of Conley at all as Griz def is really good. Plays entire 1st Q Kings down 20-28. Comes back in at 7:46 mark of 2nd after a disastrous stint by Sessions. Kings down 24-38, has good drive down middle for finger roll to make it 30-45, little runner at head of key for 2. Griz really get their hands on the ball defensively getting bunch of TO,s, Griz defense making Kings life very miserable as most of time they are getting shot off only in last 5-6 seconds of every possession. Down 42-58 at half. Kings with 11 TO’s (most being unforced) giving Griz 16 pts. DC starts 3rd quarter and runs set play assist to Ben stop & pop in key for quick 2. Ball moving better but Hollins gets 2nd tech foul and is gone early in 3rd. Another drive by DC straight thru Beno for foul and 2 FT, plays rest of 3rd DC starts 4th. Kings catch up and are down only 3 at 71-74 mostly due to Evans and the bigs. Collison has done better job guarding Conley holding him to only 7 pts so far and ball movement much better. Sessions comes in to give DC a breather but that doesn't work out too well and DC comes back in at next dead ball at 6:27 mark and Griz over foul limit. DC steps into pass lane for steal and feed to Ben for slam. But Kings can not get closer than 6-7 with poor shooting caused by better defense from the Griz. Grade lower due to Conley basically shutting him down in first half and his 5 TO’s but the + for holding Conley to only 10 pt and a good stat line of 16 pts, 7 reb, 7 ast and 4 stl. --Cruz

Casspi ( C ) -- on a night featuring such a ridiculous scrapping effort from Reggie, you maybe would have hoped Casspi could have risen up to join him and make it a double fisted attack. But he never really got going, had two nice drives, one in each half, but that was pretty much it offensively. And he wasn't on the glass and was being if anything outhustled by Tony Allen until coming up with a strong d-board (his only board of the night) in the early 4th. Its not that he was obviously bad out there. It was that he was largely forgettable out there for one of the few times this season. He made a few nice plays, but not enough to have any real impact. --Brick

Landry ( D+ ) -- This wasn’t pretty. Landry was completely ineffective in the first half, and only moderately effective in the second half (I’m being nice). He had issues handling the ball all night. It was kind of strange. He registered four turnovers, but it felt like rebounds and passes and potential steals were just slipping through his hands repeatedly. The Grizzlies are one of the most physical teams in the NBA, and Landry is a fairly physical player himself, but the size difference was a factor tonight. He had issues defending the paint, and part of me doesn’t want to blame Carl for that because he shouldn’t have to defend Zach Randolph or Marc Gasol, but that is the position the Kings have put themselves in. Some of the fouls called on Landry were really weak, and you could tell that it was getting to him. On the positive side, he had a few meaningful buckets in the second half that helped the Kings make this one interesting, including a nice little post jumper, an offensive rebound put back, and a dunk off a nifty Reggie Evans steal. I wouldn’t call his night ‘good’, though, and as a veteran on this team who can be an effective basketball player, this performance just wasn’t enough. That was only magnified by how hard and determined Reggie Evans played when the Kings desperately needed someone to step up in Cousins (and then Hollins) absence. --Mass

Stauskas ( D ) -- Starts with a pass to Landry, but Landry doesn’t convert. Had to leave Pondexter open trying to keep him and Carter at the same time, but saved by the Grizzlies miss. Then driving to the hoop but stopped by a block, but no TO. Then an air ball from the corner, which Evans saved. One more 3-pointer, but rimmed out. Nik did fairly good keeping Pondexter and a bit of Carter as well, but his shooting confidence is not there. He must find it to regain his shot. --Kingston

Evans ( A ) -- you know, some of Reggie's typically ineffective defensive work against everyone he was askeed to guard from Randolph to Gaosl to John Leuer in the first half prevents me from putting a + next to his grade, but by all rights he deserves it anyway despite any imperfections here. Reggie Evans, 34 years old, lacks talent, coming off 7 straight DNP-CDs, does not even get into the game until the final minute of the first quarter...and y the end of the third quarter this near-nonentity was leading a huge comeback by hustling and scrapping and snagging every rebound on the court. More than that, he was scoring right through Marc Gasol, who might want to get fat again if he wants to win another DPOY, because Reggie was kinda clowning him, once even coming up with a spinning post move right over him, and just pushing him out of the way on the glass. Made some amazing plays muscling for position inside and getting tip follows, racing back on the break to tip away rebounds to stop buckets, chasing boards into the corner, and just generally creating havoc. Along the way though notched 17 points, and it wasn't all hustle follows. he had several nice post moves, drove baseline once when it opened up, and looked to be on his way to a 20-20 night at one point. He completely turned the game in the third after the Grizz looked ready to apply a sleeper hold and just rock us to sleep for the night. But Reggie wasn't having any of it, the enthusiasm bled over tot he team and the crowd, and we delayed the inevitable for over the quarter while cutting the former 21pt lead down to as few as 3pts. He finally began to sputter a bit at the very end, notching a couple of turnovers on an offensive foul and a bad pass to Rudy that was picked off. But we would have been long gone by the point those plays happened and deep into the garbagetime had the grinning imp not led us charging back into it in the first place. No idea if this leads to regular minutes again or not. It did for DWill, but there are only so many spots. In any case, a heckuva effort. --Brick

Sessions ( F ) -- Sessions starts 2nd quarter. First shot a brick doesn't draw iron. Being guarded by Beno Udrih, who easily gets away from Sessions on offense without the ball, first one way then the other. Ramon drives to lane and tries a floater but its a foot short! Next time down he fumbles ball a bit then double dribbles. Back other way Beno drives around him baseline for easy reverse layup. At 7:46 mark of 2nd, Collison back in for rest of game. Ramon has goose eggs again in stat line for 10 min on court: 0 pts, 0 reb, 0 stl, but 2 TO’s and only 1 ast.--Cruz

Moreland ( INC ) -- Moreland's second NBA adventure was nearly as exciting as his first, as this time he nearly doubled his floortime to 1:14 seconds of garbagetime. If he keeps on doubling his minutes every game, by the end of December he should be playing roughly 5120 minutes a game, which you gotta admit would be a pretty impressive feat for any player, not just a rook. --Brick

Re: The Poll

I know the Kings' record without Cousins the past two years, but this is a different Kings team. We're 0-2 this year without Cousins, but both games were against championship contenders. ANY team would be hard-pressed to beat the Spurs and the Grizzlies without their best player.

That being said, I think the only players close to Cousins on that poll are LeBron and Davis.

One disturbing stat was JT and Rollins, on the floor for a total of 37 min between them they get a total of 3 reb, 0 stl and 2 points. Sure JT did good job on Zach and Hollins kept close to Gasol, but....
BenMac is going along nicely and getting his own shots a little more each game.

Omni only getting 17 minutes was a bit of mystery until looking at his stat line of only 5 pts and 1 reb and zipola everywhere else.
The big plus was getting the lead down to 3 from 21 in second half but without Cuz that was best to be had. Commendable effort for some.

I have to admit, I didn't even look at the other answers. There wasn't really any question in my mind.

It's easy to say Cuz is the most important as we're most exposed to him and his play every game, but we'd see similar falls with other teams without their top guys. In fact, we have with how bad the Thunder have been with Durant and Westy.

We can't mitigate the loss of a top 10 player. And that's fine. Not many teams can. What's important is we're still competing and making it a game against top tier competition. Plug back in Top 10 player and we'll be fine.

Also, this is why Ryan Hollins isn't a rotational player. He'll have a good game once in awhile, , 0 points, 1 rebound, 1 block in 17 minutes sort of lines happen quite a bit when he gets extended minutes

Not to mention he's racked up quite the ratio of flagrants/technical fouls to minutes played and those free points can completely alter the momentum of a game

They beat us without Durant and Westbrook, and Scott Brooks is an idiot.

I'd like to know what is the Kings' record when DeMarcus does not play since entering the league. Also...at what point will Sessions be held accountable and see some bench warming duties because I can understand Malone letting him figuring it out but he just doesn't fit with the rest of the team..it's really painful to watch this guy. A trade or two needs to be done...I hope Pete is looking for some type of shooting and/or defense.

Joey Crawford needs to be removed from the league, or counseled HARD by the NBA.
He quite clearly places himself above the play on the court. He is psychologically addicted to elevating himself above all the players on a regular basis. He simply could not stop himself from taking over the game and calling every single foul he could down the stretch to take the game out of the players' hands.
He acted like an egocentric prima donna.

I have NEVER seen more out-of-bounds calls go to one team in one game, EVER.

There was absolutely no way the Kings could guard ZBo or Gasol, the way they were calling it.
If those are fouls on JT, I'd really like someone to ask the refs how a player can possibly defend those guys flailing into them and getting the call.

The game was not nearly as close as the score indicated - the Grizzlies could have gone to ZBo or Gasol anytime they wanted in the 4th to get a basket, if they'd really needed one.
The refs really didn't need to be helping them stay in the lead.

It's really too bad we don't have a solid offense (and defense, no matter what anyone here thinks, Beno stayed in front of his man and we didn't get many points or good looks on him) backup guard like Beno on this team - he makes less money than Sessions, too.

Not since entering the league -- would have been a point it did not matter as much with both him and his ****ing moron coaches doing everything possible to keep him from being a star/depended on. However its 0-12 the last 2 seasons, 0-13 if you could the 5min + then injured game vs. the Rockets last year

Can Ramone Sessions get any more worthless? What a horrible game. Refusal to play Ray McCallum is just stupid at this point. What could he do that was possibly worse then what we are seeing from Sessions? Hollins was Teed way too fast both times and eliminated any chance we had to contend under the hoop. Just could not afford to lose ANY front court players with Cuz out, and the Ref's did just that....Hum.... what a coincidence...

Just not enough to stay with a good Griz team. If Cuz had played it may have gone differently. Somebody get that man some CHICKEN SOUP !!

Well, the November of Death is over. Lets hope December is kinder to the Kings. We are still well ahead of where we were last season. Lets hope that home games and practice help this team to gel. Turnovers are killing us. Need to practice together more. Nothing can help Sessions except a prolonged session on the end of the bench.

No Reggie Evans thread? Disappointed Kingsfans.com

Aside from Sessions everyone did what they could, just silly turnovers cost us. I can't fault the effort and that's what counts, execution will come eventually and it would be much better if Cousins was playing but at least this year when we lose we lose trying.

The chemistry between Gay and Mclemore is becoming more and more evident and Ben just get's better and better can is balling I did not see this coming.

I don't know why; when have we done that in a loss before?
What's it matter? He literally did everything in his power and beyond to bring us back and put us in a position to win. It's not Reggie Evans fault Darren Collison can't play 48mins a game so we don't have to see Sessions. The guy just sat off 3 games + and comes back against Z-Bo and the leading MVP candidate and took it to them and impacted the game more than both while having 17/20 if that's not thread worthy regardless of win/loss I don't know what is.

Chalk it up to precedent, then. We didn't do it, because we haven't done it. And we're not particularly inclined to do so. This isn't the first time someone has put up huge numbers in a loss, and not gotten a thread, and it probably won't be the last. Because we lost. And people are less likely to want to create celebratory threads after a loss. I still don't know why you would find that at all surprising.

I don't recall anyone revoking your posting privileges, if it bothers you that much.

Nie comeback after a disastrous start. We didn't hold it but it was a very impressive effort. Be nice to win one though. Let's. Get the next one.

The bench sucks. Badly. You can mix up Hollins/Evans/Landry/dwill/sessions/Ray/Nik in whatever order/combo you want, and we can argue all day about it, but I don't think there's a combo in there that will ever work consistently. That's a talent problem. Hard to squeeze a diamond out of that pile of has beens and never was's. Not against a title contender.

JT/Boogie are the only decent big defenders on the roster. One or the other has to be on the court at all times. This is hard to do when one isn't in the building and the other is "fouling" out in 19 mins.

That's on the GM, not the coach. This team can't win minus boogie. No team relies more on one guy.

Don't give up on the bench just yet. They have had their moments, more on defense than offense. We are dependent on Cuz, Gay, Thompson and Collison none of whom are bench players. Let's get a team back together and go.

The one thing that really bothered me about this game is how few minutes Nik got. Regardless of position, he looks like he can help initiate the offense and is a willing passer. He barely showed up last night

There was absolutely no way the Kings could guard ZBo or Gasol, the way they were calling it.

These weak phantom fouls on a guy thats playing "legal" defese kills me...cousins doesn't get these crap calls...my wife had to remind me more than once I was holding our newborn because I was cursing at the TV lol

Sessions has the longest leash for a pro athlete I have ever seen. After this the coach surely has to put him on the end of the bench right? My god Nik couldn't do worse playing the point
