Don't Make Me Use The Bat
In honor of Ron's tooth incident, tonight's theme is going to be: Real Tough Guys . Ron wouldn't even make the B list compared to these guys.

Note: upon a suggestion I am going to include a "clean" theme-free version of the grades down beneath the themed grades (i.e. after even Theus's grade) under one of these:
Clean Grades Below
. It was suggested to me, and I agree, that the themes break up the grades narrative somewhat, so once I am done with the theme I am going to copy/paste all of them under one spoiler tag (I hope -- unless there is some sort of restriction on how much info you can have under one of them).

Cisco ( B ) -- started off the game with a quick postup of Daniel Gibson -- good move by Theus to immediately try to use our no-PG lineup to our favor. But predictably got into foul trouble after his one post up. Had some good drives in the second quarter which succeeded on on pure aggression more than finesse or skill. And after starting the third with what I am sure was another drawn up attempted posting of Gibson (failed), played a very aggressive half, including making several last second bailout hoops when our offense had broken down. Now, the fact that our offense had broken down largely because Cisco was hogging the ball and just dribbling dribbling dribbling without moving it he'd probably prefer we don't talk about. Overall a strong/solid game in most ways, but if he was the "PG" the zero assists tells you most of what you need about his effectiveness in getting us into anything. Note: I have Cisco here listed at SF, and Salmons at PG. But this game it was pretty clear the matchups were Cisco vs. PGs and Salons vs. LeBron, so that should probably be reversed (and would be if I weren't so lazy).

Man Bites Dog To Death -- you don't mess with this guy. What do you do when you see a big dog trying to eat your puppy? Jump the damn thing and show it who's got the real canines of course:
http://www.wayodd.com/chinese-man-bites-dog/v/7597/

Moore ( D+ ) -- invisible man remake should star this man. Never has such outlandish hair been so let down by the actual product underneath. On his way to his nightly 3pts 4rebs nothingness had two highlights: first in the third quarter got free for a drive and dunk when Big Z mysteriously decided to get over aggressive with him. Second in the final minutes may have been a tad late on a rotation out to a three point shooter -- didn't look that bad to me, but Theus barked something nasty at him (happened right in front of our bench) and it appeared that mikki Moore of all people barked something back. This led to one of Reggie's now patented go to your room maneuvers where he yanks a guy, browbeats him, and then immediately reinserts him. Other than that, I noticed him set one good screen for Cisco I think and...liek I say, invisible man. No help at all while Z, Gooden and Devin Brown (of all people) pounded us on the glass.

Bert Trautmann -- who you may well ask? Bert Trautmann of course! Bert used to be a goalkeeper for Manchester back in the good ole days (the 1950s). Damn good one too. But what Bert is most famous for was his play in the 1956 FA Cup Finals (English soccer championship). You see in the middle of the game Bert got involved in a big collision and knocked unconcsious. Undaunted, he was revived and returned to the game to play goaltender, and make a bunch of great saves to secure the win. What wasn't revealed at the time was that he had suffered a broken neck in the collision and was playing with a broken vertebrae in his neck. :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Trautmann

Miller ( C+ ) -- missed everything early, and neither he nor Mikki were able to keep Big Z off the glass. Did pick up his own rebounding as the half went along, and played a nice two man game with Kevin near the end of the first half ala the old Peja days. Started his whiny thing again in the third, complaining after numerous non calls. We were in a zone much of the time disguising his interior weakness and confusing the primitive Cavs offense, but when we dropped out of it, Gooden and Z routinely outmuscled him (althought Z could not get anything to fall in there). But while he could not shoot, who knows maybe that helped him to think like a big man as he put up solid rebound numbers (the pause being that his opponents put up even bigger ones), and came up with a trio of surprise blocks inside. Also was even willing to put that awesome mobility on display in a number of show traps on LeBron way up above the circle. So...not much help on offense, but was (of course) our only big playing like a big, so maybe not so very bad. Decided on the lower half grade because he was another one of our mega-minutes guys, and the 10rebs aren't really that special in that much time.

66 Year Old Man Saws Off Own Leg -- so its time to move onto the nutty amputation section, and this one I really liked when it popped up this summer. Old guy has a tree fall on him in the forest. All by himself, no help will come, and he can;t move the tree. So he decided the only way out is to cut off his own leg...with a pocket knife!!:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/06/06/state/n132845D67.DTL

Martin ( A ) -- solid first quarter, hihglighted bya nice steal on Devin Brown up top leading to a breakaway. And was off to another big first half taking advantage of the gaping chest wound that is the Cavs OG spot with Hughes out and Pavlovic still playing himself into shape (actually
its pretty much a wound even when those guys are 100%, but Hughes is at least a rangy defender). Scoring pace slowed in the third, but his nighty FT fest continued at a torrid pace -- 18 more this time out -- and kept him lurching forward almost to the end of the game. That end deserves some discussion, because we were down 2 with 30 seconds to go or so, and on a night when Kevin already had 32 of course you are going to give the ball to him, which we did. Thing was, and you could see this coming given that he ahd already shot 18 FTs on the night, he basically went for the flop rather than the shot, pumped and jumped into the guy, did not get the call, and we lost it in the ensuing chaos. Can't leave the game in the refs hands --have to try to get a shot up and let the fouls take care of themselves. Anyway, it was still another big game for Kevin, keyed around the FT party, and the late failure alone can't knock it off of an A I think. Not as good as the other night, really didn;t shoot that great, and took an insane 46 minutes to put up the numbers (and really that's got to slow down a bit here or Kevin is going to be exhausted by the Christmas). But he outscored and generally outperformed LeBron in a nationally televised game (note that LeBron had insane defensive attention thrown at him), and was at the heart all game long of us keeping it close.

Man Cuts Off His Own Arm -- and of course this was the more famous story of the guy who cut off his own arm after it was pinned by an 800 pound boulder. With, you guessed it, a pocket knife. remind me to leave my pocket knife at home next time I am out in the wild lest I get the urge to do something really nutty with it:

Salmons ( B ) -- Had the unenviable task of guarding LeBron James today. And while he had a LOT of help (basically the whole team at one time or another) John was the point man, and the scheme had #23 under control for a half. John himself started off wild and erratic in the early going playing out of his comfort zone. But he had a nice drive to start the 2nd before going to the bench, and upon his return was solid, and hit a three that briefly put us up at one point. Began to lose control of LeBron a bit in the third, and grew quiet himself. Maybe just the attrition of banging against that big body. Was not finished however, and did some things in the 4th, including hitting a big shot in the final minutes. But was not able to stop LeBron when it mattered down the stretch, and the young guy just decided it was time to win it. Did not shoot well, did not rebound, did not collect assists, but deserves considerable credit for heading the effort against LeBron that gave us a chance in this one.

Evil Knievel -- this complete nut was the daredevil extraordinairre during the 1970s, famed for just doing stupid stuff. Getting out of the hospital a month alter, and going out and doing it again. He is in the guiness book of world records for having broken 40 bones and had 14 surgeries before he finally retired. No fear. No brains. But no fear.

Thomas ( C+ ) -- in the early going got on the glass (a unique concept for Kings bigs), and made a hook. He also showed stone hands, and got lit up by Gooden. Then started really looking like himself in 2nd quarter -- not a good thing -- and it was only spot minutes thereafter. Of course given Mikki's usual nothing game, Kenny might have been the better PF today.

Man Cuts Off Own Head With Chainsaw -- now there was a similar story about some dude attempting to cut off his head wiht a circular saw in California after he killed his mom. But this chainsaw guy actually succeeded in beheading himself (after he killed his dad) and so gets the nod. I mean..that's nasty. Not sure suicide makes you tough, but doing it wiht a chainsaw shows style if nothing else. ;)

Douby ( B- ) -- came off the bench firing. Started forcing in 2nd quarter (which given his blinders approach to offense largely just means he made his shots early, and then missed them later). Hit another shot in the third, this time down in the post believe it or not. Also got exterminated on a fastbreak when he was unaware that LeBron was running him down. A two handed block off the backboard was the result. Was quiet thereafter. Was generally solid in there unless you consider him a PG of course, in which case he, Cisco, and Greene combined to give us a grand total of zero assists.

Ronnie Lott -- okay, for you younger posters you should know that once upon a time long long ago, the 49ers were actually good. And they had this safety who was also good. Very good. And this guy kind of liked to play and win. In fact he so kind of liked to play and win that one year in the playoffs he hurt his finger and was going to be forced to sit out. So he did the only reasonable thing -- he cut the tip of his finger off so he could go back to playing. Maybe not as extreme as taking your own head, but then again this nut did it just to go play a game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Lott

Watkins ( INC ) -- second quarter cameo, nothing of note

Man Cuts Off Own Testicles -- okay, its hard to trump cutting off you head wiht a chainsaw, but... Some rugby fan, drunk and excited his team won, decided to fulfill a promise he had made before the match. And so he did. Taking 10 minutes to do it,a dn then carrying them down to the local pub to show his pals before passing out from blood loss. Er...

Greene ( B- )-- in for one play to finish the first quarter. Got back in for a tad longer at the end of the third, and scooped up a loose ball and went down the other way for a layup to put us up 1 after three quarters. Got a few more minutes to start the 4th, and was basically in there to spell Salmons and guard LeBron. Confirms his defensive versatility, and while he did nothing spectacular with it, he actually was playing LeBron more one on one than Salmons was, as we trusted him to stay in front of him. Of course given the barely over the threshold minutes, adn once again the non-existent numbers (2pts 1TO), he remains almost impossible to grade. I gave a B- for me thnkking he did most of what we asked him. But obviously its all modest in his case.

Jessie Ventura in Predator -- okay, I know, fictional character and all that. But you can only take so many amputations in one thread. So I am going with Jessie's supremely macho character from the late 1980's gubenator movie Predator. Upon being shot, and being told he was bleeding by a fellow member of his uber-pumped up strike team, he looks down contemptuously to the wound and sneers "I ain't got time to bleed." Such a famous little bit of over the top machismo that he went on to use it as the name of his 2000 autobiography after the voters in Minneosota one-upped the Californian's by electing this musclehead governor:

Theus ( A- ) -- opened the game on a good little note, immediately posting up Cisco on Daniel Gibson to take advanatage of the size mismatch. If your "PG" is going to get you zero assists, might as well get some post play out of him. And when I say "your Pg gets you zero assists", I mean ALL of them. combined. Ont he way to a grand total of 7 assists on the night. Seven. We are 29th of 30 teams in the elague in assits so far this season. In any case we showed a good defensive strategy vs. Lebron in the first half, trapping and doubling him. Of course the flipside of that is always that guys were popping open around the perimeter, but you take that. And further turned the screws on the Cavs by dropping into zones to exploit their lack of outside shooting (or good offensive structure -- Mike Brown is the new JVG). The Cavs never did consistently figure out that relatively simple gambit. You can also see Reggie now settling into a fairly short rotation. As guys get healthy we will have to see how it goes, but right now he's down to 7 guys, and then some spot minutes for Greene. And its not 7 guys wiht equal distribution of minutes either -- Reggie is riding his horses hard. Much harder than Adelman, the dreaded wear-the guys-out coach, ever did. Kevin notched 46 minutes tonight in a non-OT game, and is averaging 42min per game on the season. And the end result of all of this was that we had a chance to win this one. The Cavs were not playing well, aside from their normal dominant rebounding. They were barely scraping along on offense, and the disaster that is their OG position was perfectly tailored to our strengths. But in the end LeBron came up big, and Kevin made a bit of a mistake on his attempt to tie in the closing seconds, appearing to flop around looking for the foul rather than getting a good shot off. Might have helped a bit late if we had had some more timeouts to stay organized, but Reggie definitely made an error on that front, once again burning too many of them early in the half and finding himself down to just one to use in all of the crunctime. And so 1-4 we go, and whether we come out and play inspired ball to beat the hapless T-Wolves (which would then mean our two victories were over an 0-6 team and an 0-5 team ) or come out with a hangover and join them as a fellow 1 win team we have yet to see. Flaws and all this was Reggie's best coaching job however. We appeared ready, had a gameplan, and executed it for most of the night until the great player just took over when it mattered. And really for the first time this season the emphasis on defense showed up on court (we came into the game allowing 105.3ppg on 51% shooting). (The rebounding...eh, simply do not have the personnel). All in all, a good effort. Not enough, but a good effort.

They played very well tonight.

I think our Kings are going to be alright. They played hard tonight against a good team. The more experience these guys get the better our whole team will be once the rest are healthy and playing. They had really good zone defense. I only saw one thing that has always needed to improve and thats rebounding. Especially offensive rebounding.

Gadget's alterna-grades:

(A+) to the fact that the one game that I am able to watch this year wasn't a complete embarrassment.

(F--) to the fact that I had to watch it through the delirium of a fever of 101.8.

They had 7 assists. SEVEN assists. I didn't know it was even possible to have 7 assists as a team. I checked and double checked, dayuum.

Overall they played a decent game. The last few minutes their youth showed, but that's to be expected.

Cisco did burn one unexpectedly late in 4th saving that out of bounds dive. It did save the ball, but just bad luck Reggie there.

Exactly. You can hardly blame Reggie for Cisco's use of the timeout.
