Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Another "All-Star" bites the dust.
Woot! Isn't life just more fun when Boogie is back? So this went about as well as you could ever have expected it to. The Bulls have no talent, so decided to play some football instead. Boogie showed no signs of rust at all and dominated the middle. IT stepped back and contained himself as an efficient 3rd option, Rudy got going after a terrible start, and get this: we brought the defense. Cousins was a big part of that actually, but it was mostly team wide. Now the Bulls can't score anyway, but tonight was extreme ugliness. We held them to 28% shooting on the night. 28%! Joakim Noah got thrown out and had a colorful expletive for each of the zebras in order -- if we ever were to pair he and Cuz the refs would show up at the arena in ear muffs. We left Cuz in to start the 4th and with help from an unexpected source (Jimmer fighting for his rotation spot after McCallum fell on his face in the first half) rather than the lead shrinking, it exploded into a 30pt rout. It was a beat down, and with the Big Three back together we were finally back in the beat downer's role rather than the beat downee.

Gay ( C+ ) -- Rudy was just OK tonight, but fortunately for the Kings that was all they really needed out of him. The first quarter was probably his weakest of the game. He just wasn’t scoring, and aside from a few nice passes inside to DMC, he was invisible out there. He would eventually get some of his offense going, and that included a nice (and important) 6 straight points late in the second quarter that would stretch the Kings lead to 7. I don’t want to give too much credit to Rudy and that flurry of points, but the Kings never looked back from that point on. He would chip in with a few more drives here and there, but outside of that run he was never really the focal point of the offense. I don’t know if it was in the scouting report or what, but when Rudy got the ball it felt like he was trying to drive with it most of the time. I like the attitude, but he was getting the ball stripped from him quite a bit tonight. Turnovers were certainly an issue. He made a solid contribution on the glass, which contributed to how badly the Kings destroyed the Bulls in rebounding (53-30). This was a blowout, and Gay only played 25 minutes. I’d have to think if he played his season average his numbers would look a little more impressive, but he was still a positive contributor tonight, and a C+ seems appropriate for what he gave the Kings in this one. --Mass

Thompson ( C ) -- we were a man down, so I took all the lesser grades on the night (PFs and SGs), and man did they put the lesser in lesser. There's almost nothing to talk about with JT tonight. With the Big Three reunited, there was not a ball to spare for our SG and PF. Just before half all three of the Big Three were in double figures, while Marcus and JT had 0pts apiece. Then JT hit two FTs for his only points of the night. I don't think JT had even taken a shot and his only offensive highlight, so to speak, was getting off balance on a post move, missing it, and picking up an loose ball foul trying to get the ball back. So with the offensive side of the ball out of the picture, how did he do on the side where he was going to have to make his money tonight? Ok. Not great. Tonight wasn't a night where his contributions keyed our defensive effort, and I think Acy was actually the better PF tonight on both ends. But after Boozer scored on him to start the game, JT was back to playing Cuz's silent in the background wingman. He's not primarily responsible for Boozer's bad night, later in the game he would get backdoored by Gibson for an alley oop. But he was typically in the region. In a huge change from our normal issues, the Bulls got very few unchallenged shots inside, and while it was Cuz who was notably active back there, in the background Jason was stepping over to rotate as well. Had a few loose fouls in the early going , never was much on the boards as Cuz just dominated the glass, but...Jason did not stand out in any good or bad way. Just there, filled the role. And so wil get that grade.--Brick

Cousins ( A ) -- The return of our foundation into the lineup saw an immediate reversal of fortune, where after dropping our last six games we thoroughly routed and blew the Bulls off the floor. Boogie started this one on a mission and seemed destined for a gigantic night as he came out and put up 11 pts/7 rebs in the 1st quarter, mostly by over-muscling and over-powering the Bulls frontline. Boogie absolutely dominated inside early on and Chicago had no answers as the only thing which could stop him was himself, and he did just that, getting into foul trouble(picking up 3 before half) which limited his mins and disrupted his rhythm. The 2nd half saw continued dominance from Boogie, not only on the offensive end but also by cleaning the glass. Something we saw tonight and must have been apparent to just about every Kings fan was his presence, the attention he commands and willingness to move the ball added multiple dimensions to our offense which have been sorely missed since he picked up the ankle injury. Tonight our attack mostly went through Cuz, the guys played off him and it truly had a positive effect on our offense. Guys were getting good looks, open looks. The ball was quickly swung off the doubles/triples he drew and Chicago couldn't keep up. He was the focus of Chicago's defensive attention, causing them headaches while practically allowing his teammates to attack 4v3 or 4v2 due to the defense overloading against him in the hope of stopping him. It really was just hope and Boogie did what he wanted most of the night. Apparently frustrated the stuffing out of Noah and after banging against Boogie for a little under three quarters, decided he had had enough, picking up his 2nd tech on the night and went to the showers early. Noah as we all know is no slouch defensively and for Cuz to bully him, treat him like a kid who hasn't yet reached HS graduation, then has to go home and watch that same guy represent the East in the All Star will not be fun, but should add motivation. I thought Boogie came out with a chip on his shoulder from the opening tip tonight and believe it's largely due to the perceived All Star snub. Watch out NBA. --Rain

Thornton ( D ) -- same guy who scored 42 two weeks ago believe it or not. And nights like tonight are why that just does not matter anymore. Not able to function in the shots starved environment presented by the Cuz/Gay/IT trio. Started off the game missing his jumpers, and was quickly ignored afterwards. Got to the line once forcing a dumb take on the break into a guy's chest. Got chased down from behind on one break and had his shot blocked. Had no particular effect on the other end either, got shot over by the taller Chicago wings, and Malone was off searching for a SG again, first trying McLemore, then when that was no better, going to Gay. --Brick

Thomas ( B+ ) -- With Cousins back and his role diminished did a nice job of picking his spots without forcing much. Wasn't involved early as we were looking to set up Gay and Cousins against their perspective match ups. Started to play his way into the game mid way through the first. Had a nice pick and roll with Cousins, which was followed up with a nice floater in the lane. Kept finding his way into the lane as he manage to split on a couple floaters in the paint. Finished the quarter impressively as he found Acey down low and then found him again for the corner three as time expired. Didn't get much rest as momentum was shifting. Not a pretty game at this point as sloppy play and the Bulls style bogged down the offense. Helped turn things around to close out the half. Hinrich and Augustin just couldn't stay in front of him as he manage to get inside for a pretty little floater off the glass. Got inside a couple more times before the half including a easy drive right to the rim to closes it out. A quite third quarter, but with Gay and Cousins rolling there's no shame, maybe even virtue, in taking one shot and blending in. Isaiah's defensive effort and hustle was solid tonight, but to be fair the Bulls guards couldn't hit anything including their open looks. Didn't log a minute in the fourth as Cousins and Jimmer closed things out. After a rough stretch it was nice to see Isaiah under control and looking to pick his spots as the offense flowed mostly through Gay and Cousins post ups in the high and low post. Better off the ball then he's given credit for and despite his weaknesses can be valuable spacing the floor. If he sticks around post trade deadline it should be interesting to see how he develops as the third option. --Henkel
