Salmons ( D+ ) -- nothing to see here. Very quiet first half with only a single bucket late in the first quarter, and Johnson and Thornton's hot second quarter kept him on the bench throughout. Was back in for the final defenive possession of the half, and got beat to the hoop as the Cats scored. In the third missed an open corner three as we missed opportunity after opportunity to open this up and put them away. Had a terrible sequence that started wiht him standing flatfooted on a rebound and getting boarded over, then eventually fouling Haywiood to give him the +1. Added a terrible pass from the corner up top that was picked off to start a Bobcats break, as we gave away our modest lead. Best that can be said for this was that MKG did no damage the other way, but then again MKG isn't that type of player. In any case 4pts 2reb 1ast and 3TOs in 26min isn't getting it done. Just one of several guys who may have played tired out there tonight. Of course its always hard to tell when you are talking about the Great Snooze himself.--Brick

Thompson ( C+ ) -- maybe Jason is studying up to be a ninja spy, as he is already mastering the art of invisibility. That said, this was much better than the last 5 or 6 games, by not being terrible. He was efficient tonight, just never at any point felt like he was having an impact. He was just "guy who hit random jumpshot" every 5 minutes or so. He got one solid little post move early, where he looked very comfortable and took his time against the Cats' excuse for a frontline. He got a quick little dunk in the early third when the Cavs defense mysteriously left him. There was a long jumper against the clock late that actually helped bail us out. But it was all just random, nothing sustained. And on the other end he still isn't rebounding. There just is no doubt Reke is the #2 rebounder on the team right now, which is scary (TRob would have that title with PT). Jason is just, again, invisible on the glass. Its hard to even diagram. Just wherever the ball is, he isn't, and he's not winning any scrums. Let Warrick get a few of his jumpers the other way, and more or less played him to a draw. That's not a compliment or what you want out of Jason, but like I say, this was better than what we have seen, and at least he slowed down and was efficient on his offensive attemtps this time. He was playable.

Cousins ( B- ) -- and the beat goes on for DeMarcus. This was not a huge game for him, but it was a solid one further cementing the Good Boogie numbers we have seen ever since "The Incident" nearly a month ago now. The funny thing is how in just amonth its now DeMarcus who looks like the guy who knows how to play, and who looks bemused as our chuckers run arounf making selfish plays. Got off to a pretty good styart as long as he didn't settle for the jumper, which was not on, and per usual spotted in some brilliant Boogie-only plays including a beautiful one handed bounce pass with english from the 3pt line to a cutting MT. When he returned late in the half was not as involved, as guys like MT and JJ are not conducive to offensive focuses elsewhere. Started the thrid with a traveling call in the paint, but got multiple dunks behind Biyoombo as IT just threw it over the top, and the Cats did not react. Wasn't really creating his own shots, but did have another one of those special plays with a great catch and quick spin finsish. Had too many bad pass turnovers thoughout as he repeatedy tried to throw it out of doubles through traffic. When he returned in the late 4th immediately missed a turnaround jumper leaving the door open for the Cats, and forced a tough tough shot at the 2min mark that was blocked. But was strong on the d-boards and anchored us as the starting backcourt came back in to win it. --Brick

Evans( C+ ) -- seemed to be pressing early. Mixed in strong plays, a steal up top and breakaway, some assists, with forced shots and passes. When he returned in the late half (too alte again as Smart just cannot figure out how to give him minutes) largely frozen out by MT's presence, but did set up Cuz on a pick and roll. The other way he was not exceptional. Guys were getting little scores on him in various ways. Just looked a little unsettled there, and did not start locking in until after half. Was quiet in the third until he was forced to throw up a long off balance jumoer against the clock late in the quarter, but he hit it and imemdiately followed it with a quick take along the baseline the enxt time down the floor. But just as we got a burst out of him, picked up his 4th foul, and the genius coach AGAIN takes that as a sign to play any and every borderline scrub on the roster as the Cats came back and actually took the lead at one point. Finally returned to the game just in the nick of time with 3 minutes to go. Made a mistake trying to drive it 1 on 3 ont eh break and got it salapped away off his knee, but also drew a foul at the 2:40 mark on a drive to retie it at 90, got the conversion on the break from IT at the 1:20 mark, grabbed a big defenisve board to close the next defensive possesion, and then went down the other way and got the layup on the pass from Cuz. Was not a great game for Reke, but the flurry at the end helped us close it (note mostly as a finisher, whihc is easier than being a creater), and its the damn minutes again as much as anything. Consider this: 2 games ago Reke played 40 minutes and put up 21pts 8reb 8ast. If he had played 40 min tonight he was on pace to put up 25pts 5reb 6ast. But he didn't he played 26min. Some of that is foul trouble, some of it Smart, and overall just an ok game for him. --Brick

Stats: 30min 15pts (4-11, 0-0, 7-8) 5reb 7ast 2stl 0blk 0TO
Thomas ( B ) -- Thomas definitely got a bump in his grade for the final 1:30 of the game. First, he came up with a loose ball and got it to Tyreke on the break to give us a two-point lead, a bit later he managed to draw a bail-out foul on a jumper to get us 3 points up, then he contested Kemba's attempt to tie it from 3, forcing an air ball which led to him hitting the icing free throw. He ran the offense pretty well on top of that, and there was a stretch in the early third quarter where for about four minutes it seemed like he was hitting the open man on every single possession. And he has continued to be effective when going to the basket, especially at the end of the first quarter, when he did his best Tyus Edney impression and drove the length of the floor in 5.7 seconds to get a layup. Still, there are down bits to his game. His jumper has been absolutely terrible lately, to the point that I don't think he has hit a single one in the past two games. In addition, his defense leaves something to be desired. I heard Grant on the telecast say that IT could put some defensive pressure on Kemba Walker when he came back in halfway through the fourth quarter, but for the entire game I saw it the other way. I was thinking that as an opponent, it must be nice to know that all you've got to do is set a token screen - any screen - up top and you can shake IT loose of the ballhandler. As a result (and let's not discount that Kemba is a notorious gunner) the Bobcats attempted 17 shots on IT's defense. Luckily, they only connected for 14 points - I say luckily because IT only effectively contested 2 of those 17. Most of it was just that Kemba reverted to the 37% shooting that he flashed for his rookie season. So tonight was a mixed bag for IT, but as I said he distributed the ball well and made several key plays down the stretch to get us the win. --Capt.

Thornton ( B ) -- Thornton didn't start out so well, missing two of his first three shots (including one real pounder sequence) and having some trouble keeping Ben Gordon out of the mix, though he did manage to thwart one of Gordon's drive attempts. But somewhere around the middle of the second quarter he caught fire and ended up finishing the game by collecting 16 points on his final 9 shots. His defense was only OK, with Charlotte (usually Gordon, some Kemba, some Sessions) having their way with him more often than not, but he reaped the benefits of a poor-shooting Bobcats team to surrender only 5 points on 8 shots taken against him. I'd also complain a bit about the black-hole factor, as once the ball passed his event horizon, it was not coming back out. Still, when a guy scores an efficient 18 points, you gotta bite your tongue a bit and give a little credit. --Capt.

Robinson ( INC ) -- barely got a minute of playing time, but at least made it memorable. Came in and immediately got his first shot blocked but had a hustle tip out on the offensive glass that won't appear in the boxscore. And then took a big flung elbow from Sessions right in th mouth to close the 1st. An obvious offensive foul that cost himi a tooth and knocked him out of the rest of the game (I think that's the third King this year to lose one). And he didn't even get the foul call. --Brick

Garcia ( C ) -- another invisible stint in the second just filling out the warm body role. Finally hit a little baseline jumper after 7 minues in the game, and late in the half helped us get a little ball movement on a stagnant night. Gave us and his grade a kick though when he hit a big three at a criticla time wiht 8 minutes to go in the game and the lead down to 1. We'd eventually surrender the lead anyway, but at least he pushed it off for a few minutes. --Brick

Hayes ( INC ) -- very lucky for him he slipped in under my grading cut off as he is jsut pioneering new ways ot be ineffecive anymore. Started the 2nd offensively inept again, missing multiple little shots. And never did do a single other thing in any area. Nobody for him to guard. He's getting badly outrebounded by 5'9" guys anymore. Jsut nothing. --Brick

Stats: 19min 9pts (4-8, 0-1, 1-1) 9reb 1ast 0stl 2blk 0TO
Johnson ( B ) -- the beneficiary, if you will, of TRob's injury, as Smart largely avoids playing him at SF anymore, and Johnson spent almost his entire time as a smallball PF (although should be ntoed he really is just as big as TRob). Made the most of his opportunity, immediately starting the 2nd quarter with a quick fast spin move for the +1. Was active on the help defense, notching several blocks, including one on 7'2" Brendan Haywood. Added a drive to bail us out of a terrible possession and an offensive board and follow. Lot of energy, and the Hornets could not handle him. Was not as good after half. Closed out a long scramble play by grabbing a loose ball and slipping a pass to Ahompson inside. But in inevitable fashion got a little full of himself and ball dominant, and a couple of possessons later airballed a corner three. Definitely gave us a boost, and finally showed us some of that rebounding he was supposed to have (albeit sensible non-Kings franchises use him to gain a rebounding edge at SF rather than barely hold their own at PF).--Brick

Stats: 18min 2pts (0-4, 0-2, 2-2) 2reb 3ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Brooks ( C ) -- Brooks came out tonight and played a much better game than we've seen in his most recent two or three outings, even if the box score doesn't look that impressive. His 0-4 shooting night doesn't look fantastic, but two of those were threes he was forced to hoist at the end of the shot clock and are worth a Mulligan in my book. Likewise, Brooks' three assists don't indicate his effectiveness in setting up his teammates - he made several nice passes only to be notably victimized by JJ (who airballed an open 3) and Chuck (who missed not one, not two, but three easy shots in the paint set up by Aaron). Defensively he has his issues like the rest of our backcourt, but he managed to beautifully thwart both Kemba and Gordon once apiece on their attempts to drive to the hoop, and he drew a big charge on Henderson under the basket as the shot clock was expiring and we were in danger of giving up our patented last-second layup. In the end the Bobcats didn't attack him nearly as much as they attacked our other perimeter options, and they ended up with 1 point on four shots. So while Brooks wasn't perfect, he wasn't hurting us out there either, and despite his lack of box score production, I think he was average out there tonight. --Capt.

Couldn't believe how long Coach stuck with Brooks in the 4th quarter. He couldn't do anything right

Are you referring to Coach Smart or Aaron Brooks? You really need to be more specific. :)

Seriously, one of Smart's many failings is the tendency to stick with a player when it's clear someone/anyone could do better. Smart also has a major problem with icing players who have done well by sitting them down and forgetting about them for 15-20 minutes and then sending them back in when all hope is lost.

I am sick of the all 5 starters out all bench in type rotations. I mean he said he watched all games studying all these areas of the game like how many balls we deflected and rebounds. Does this not stand out to him. Anybody want to do a list of how many games with our current starting lineup we had the lead at the end of the first quarter?

Totally agree.

There are any number of people on this board who could make better substitutions than Keith Smart. Staggering substitutions so that at least one or two of our starters are on the court at all times makes perfect sense, especially with a young team. Not going deep into the bench unless forced to by injury makes even more perfect sense.

Allowing hot players to stay on the court is apparently against some rule, since I've only seen it once or twice all season.

Well, it would make some sense to have to go deep in the bench if we had a bunch of guys who are pigeonholed into 1 position (IT, Thornton, Cousins etc). A big strength (or at least it should be) is we have an assortment of guys who can play multiple spots. Tyreke, Salmons, Johnson, JT all can play multiple positions at a reasonably decent level which should make an 8 man rotation fairly easy. As you said as well, we have a really young core with young legs and shouldn't have to worry about the starters playing 33+ minutes a night.

ok last year i was ok with jimmer not coming off the bench. he was terrible.... but seriously hes playing much MUCH improved/great ball and smart not finding a way to get him involved in a game vs the bobcats? what the heck dude! wow we all knew Smart was Dumb but wow... just wow... we need a new coach and at least one trade at the deadline...

At least Smart finally figured out that Demarcus needs to be playing 36-40 minutes a game as opposed to the 30 minutes he was getting. Now if only we could somehow convince him to do the same with Tyreke.

Captain's analysis of IT's D is a total farce. When did Kemba get his points and assists? When the Kings turned the ball over repeatedly and he could get easy opportunities on the break. If IT made the TO's you'd at least have something to say, but he had zero, so you don't. Getting a B is patently absurd. Please watch the game next time.

It's hard to believe that MT is even listed as an option for player of the game. The dude is a guard that plays 27 minutes and has 0 assists. In the last 3 games he has played a total of 57 minutes with 0 assists. In the last 5 games he has played 106 minutes for e grand total of 2 assists. This guy needs to have a seat on the bench until he decides he wants to play team basketball.

Say what you will. I have no beef with IT, and I'm trying to be as objective as possible. But I certainly don't understand how I'm not allowed to be critical of IT's defense when he got peeled off of his man by a simple screen basically every single possession.

In fact, because I felt you were likely to complain about my analysis of IT's defense again (after you did so for the Grizz game as well) I kept my notes instead of deleting them. Here are my notes on IT's defense for the night:
Walker beats IT on a screen, misses in lane.
Switched onto MKG via screen, fouled MKG on drive
Never picked up Walker on oreb, leaving him for wide 3, missed.
Walker to hoop on screen for 2.
Screened again, led to pass for dunk.
ANOTHER screen.
Sessions full length of floor for layup. (This wasn't a break, IT just never stopped the ball)
Broke up pass for steal.
Terrible D on screen allowed Sessions to get to get an easy bucket
Fouled Walker for and-1.
Screened off Walker again.
Allowed easy 3 for Walker, missed.
Got back on D on break, resulted in walk.
Walker got by him again, passed out for nada.
Walker beats him for 2.
Did not box out Walker, allowed oreb.
Walker no problem on break. (IT was back for D on this break and didn't effectively contest)
Forced Gordon into a tough turnaround, missed.
Walker had 2.9 and almost got one to go. (This is at the end of the third when Walker got way too good of a shot)
Fouls Sessions
Forced Henderson to miss in post.
Walker gets around him again.
Contested Walker's air 3 to tie with 2.9 left

Now that's not everything, because I didn't want to pause the game every time he got screened off to write this stuff down, but I felt compelled to write it pretty often. When I look at that list I see 5 good defensive plays (6 if you count the foul against MKG which did not result in free throws). And I see 18 times that I wrote down that he didn't do a good job on D. If you get that many screens set on you, you HAVE to find a way to not get beat on them. Otherwise you've got a PG with the ball open and allowed to do anything he wants.

So there's your "farce" of a defensive analysis from someone who "didn't watch the game". Oh, I was wrong on one point, though - IT effectively contested 3 of the 17 shots taken against him, not 2. I forgot to count the miss that he forced on Henderson in the post (where, remarkably, he seems to be a better defender than up top).

Friggin unbelievable. Capt., good grade, good analysis. Good game, IT.

I am beginning to believe that Cousins is the best passer on this team. The downside of that is that he should be shooting the most.

At least Smart finally figured out that Demarcus needs to be playing 36-40 minutes a game as opposed to the 30 minutes he was getting. Now if only we could somehow convince him to do the same with Tyreke.

What I think is remarkable is that Boogie seems to be in the shape to handle this. Occasionally he will jog down on offense but as he usually sets up around the three point line and then get a better position later, I can't fault him. This guy is in shape and I'm not.

It is also remarkable that this oh so average game from him statistically still had room for some amazing plays. Most teams would settle for a big guy who averaged what DFC did last night and we look at his game and yawn waiting for another spectacular 30-15 game or such. I will follow whatever team Boogie is on and if he lives up to his youthful promise to stay in Sacramento and try to drag us out of the quagmire, we have not only found a great athlete but a high morals kind of guy. He sees a bigger picture than money and Hollywood lights. He's a small town boy who seems happy in this small town. This is backed up by something his mother said. The flashes of temper are even gone and I am a bit mystified by that unless having a few team mates say they had enough of his crap got through to him. Not sure if this is an answer though as it isn't like he is trying to control himself but it's that the explosive temper doesn't seem to be there anymore. Yes, he still gets angry at some calls but it is rare and doesn't stand out at all from how other players react.

Enjoy him while we've got him. He's special.

Not as difficult to solve as you make it sound. Pass when double or triple teamed and shoot if not.

I did not see this game.
Hell, I can't even watch the Kings anymore unless they are playing against crappy teams. It's just too painful.

But immediately upon reading your IT grade, I could tell you've got some major bias.

If you are going to be pointing out IT getting caught on screens, than you'd BETTER have been pointing out the absolute $hit-ton of times Tyreke has gotten stuck like glue on screens his entire career.

What's that? You haven't harped on that for 4 years?

Than don't focus on it with IT, or else your bias is obvious.

This game was REALLY hard to watch lol. I should have kept track of how many times the Kings came down the floor, held onto the ball at the top of the 3pt line, waited around until there was 10 seconds or less on the clock and then tried to force a play while everyone seemed to stand around and watch. This was a win that could have only happened against the Bobcats and with the help of some timely buckets at the end of the shot clock. It was one of the uglier winning efforts that ive ever seen.

I am sick of the all 5 starters out all bench in type rotations.
My 6th grade son's bball coach does this every game.
It's not because he likes the matchups, or because the other coach does it too - it's strictly because of 2 reasons:

1) It's too complicated for him to keep track of individual minutes, and he's lazy so he subs them out platoon-style.

2) During practice, he coaches plays (in a loud gym) by putting the starting 5 on the court and teaching them the play individually, talking quietly to them one at a time. Then when the other 5 get their turn, he doesn't teach them and expects them to have read his lips with the first group.

Mixing up players and sprinkling in different combinations into practice is HARD, yo - can't expect Keith Smart to do it - he's basically a 6th grade coach anyway.

It sounds like you need to volunteer to coach your sons team.....

How utterly ridiculous. When IT gets caught on screens he is compeltely worthless defensively at his size. If he's not staying in front of guys he is no factor at all. When Reke got caught on screens it lessened his impact, but he was still big, physical and a factor.

If Jimmer forgets how to shoot tommorow you better believe it is going to be the focus of every single writeup, and for good reason. If he can't shoot, he's worthless. If Reke can't shoot it still gets talked about, but he is so good at everything else its merely a sidenote.

You may, or may not have noticed the whole "Grading Consortium" thing that has been going on for the past several games. Based on your comments, I'm guessing not. Capt. Factorial did not comment on/compare Thomas' game to Evans' game because it wasn't his responsibility to do so. He did not have the assignment of scrutinizing Evans' game. He had Thomas; Bricklayer had Evans. If you want to know why Evans' game wasn't scrutinized the way that Thomas' was, take it up with the guy who graded Evans.

Ahhhh, I didn't see the game, but I did record it and I'll watch it when I get back, which should be monday sometime. I'd just like to point out, that the Capt is susposed to be grading IT, not Tyreke!!!!!! He has certain players he's assigned to, and IT is one of them. Same for me, so when I give grades to Salmons, T. Robb, and JJ, it doesn't mean I don't have opinions on the rest of the players, it just means I won't be grading them. I'll also say this! If you think its damm easy to do what Bricky and the Capt are doing, your crazy as a bat out of hell.

I can speak from experience, that there are certain players I like more than others, and its hard not to let that bias seep into my opinion. One thing I know for sure, is that the Capt isn't biased. He may be tougher than I'am, but that doesn't make him biased. Maybe I'll switch up with the Capt on IT next time, and you can see how much you like my unbiased opinion.

Hard to handle a guy you're not playing against :p

I love it when you can silence the people who think IT is infallible.
