Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Steve-Blake.jpg

First of all let me just tip my hat to Steve Blake, who played one of the best games for the Kings we've seen in years.

Secondly let me note: now 2-24 the last two seasons without Cousins. I can't say unprecedented without some way of looking it up, but I can say staggering.

Thirdly however let me also note that this again was a "good loss". Not a woss, or a lin, or whatever, but a good loss in that yes, without Cousins we were doomed, and even when we closed the score in this one I never felt we were going to win it. But we did close the score, we got bench productivity, we played hard, and in general we lost this because we didn't have the personnel, not because we lacked heart, or (mostly) weren't playing it right. It was an honorable loss the guys who played can walk off the court with heads held high about. Now can we kindly get the big guy back on the court again so we can just count them by wins and losses, not "honorable losses"?

Gay ( B ) -- Rudy was working hard to carry us in the early going, but a lot of it was tough 1 on 1 work rather than anything team oriented. As it was against the Spurs his long first layoff seemed to chill him, and he provided little after coming back late in the half. Unlike the Spurs game, he came back out to play after half, and was again doing what he could to carry us not only as a scorer, but also notching his only assist to Landry. he was never really spectacular, took 22shots to get his 24pts, but he kept scoring into the 4th, and along with the big bench effort was giving us enough of a goto guy to hang in there. It was hard work though, not always in the flow, never special. After hitting a big 3pt shot to get us within 1 with 8:30 to go, he wouldn't hit another shot until there was a minute left and the game was all but over.

Landry ( C- ) -- its possible I am being kind here. Ever since Karl has arrived he has been given these opportunities as a starter, and he's just flopped. I mean, in ruinous fashion for his future. He at least battled on the boards in the early going, but he was just flat too small. he got both his hoops in the early third off nice little dumpoff passes from Rudy and Ray, and that was it. After we started getting crushed on the glass, Karl brought in Reggie for some muscle and there just was no reason to go back to Landry again. Early this season I thought Malone was starting to maybe get enough out of Landry to make that contract at least survivable, but now I'm worried its getting anvil heavy again.

Thompson ( D- ) -- On a night when we didn't have Cousins, and we were going up against a big front line, we really really needed a lot of minutes out of JT. And he responded by becoming a foul magnet, eventually fouling out in the 4th quarter shortly after entering the game with five fouls. JT actually got off to a promising start by making a very nice pass to Gay under the basket for a layup. Then on the other end of the floor he played very tough defense on Aldridge, and getting a stop. But that was it folks. He then decided he was a three point shooter and missed one. Then Aldridge took him off the dribble and hit a running hook. A bit later Aldridge took him off the dribble again and laid it in. Then when McCallum got caught in a switch with Aldridge, JT was late rotating to help. JT went to the bench at the 4:49 mark of the 1st quarter with three fouls. Re-entered the game at the 7:30 mark of the 2nd quarter and three minutes later went back to the bench with his fourth foul. I won't belabor you with any more worthless info. That was basically the entire night for JT. So after putting together a couple of very good games, he reverted back to his inconsistent self. --Baja

McLemore ( C+ ) -- well, we have a story of not 1, not 2, but 3 separate games for Ben. in Game 1: Ben gets his ass beat by a coach who appeared to have a distinct theory on how to attack him. Ben came out, and the Blazers, a big powerfully built team, took to posting him up and simply overpowering him inside again and again. Often with Wes Matthews, but once by Robin Lopez when Ben got caught on a switch, and for some reason nobody recognized it. then just when Jason was coming over to help, Ben gave up and gambled and let Lopez roll by him for the easy layup. In any case, they were attacking him blatantly enough and successfully enough that he was quickly pulled by Karl and replaced by the much bigger Omri. In Game 2: Ben comes back in for the 2nd quarter, and he's a new man. Perhaps pep talked up on the sideline I don't know. But after Rudy kept us breathing in the first quarter, Ben filled a critical role aggressively and confidently (like the first half vs. the Spurs) striding around out there as a full fledged goto guy keeping us with a weapon out there until Rudy returned. It was an impressive streak again. Then came Game 3: and in game 3 we saw something we very rarely have: Ben turned into Nick Young. it seems clear Karl is goosing him trying to get him to be confident. But for one of the rare times in his career we saw the downside of that as Ben wouldn't step back, seemed to be come enamoured with gunning, and started throwing up some real crap shots. In fact it went badly enough that I think Karl decided to teach him a lesson that I hope Ben takes like it was a college coach doing it, and Ben was sent to the bench in the early 3rd and never returned. So, F-A-F? D-B+-D? I dunno, whatever it is, there was one quarter there to hold onto, as there often is with Ben. But just doesn't seem to be able to put together a whole game of the good stuff.

Stats: 25min 12pts (5-13, 0-2, 2-2) 2reb 5ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
McCallum ( C+ ) -- how to feel about Ray's game again is an err... Started off the game ineffective as the Blazers tried to blow us out of our own building. Came back in after Miler had restored order, and contributed a few scores down the stretch of the half. And had another burst of scoring in the third. He notched 1 or 2 good assists over that span too, which was a good thing because he was once again making some selfish decisions out there and throwing up some real junk. I can only imagine that Karl is asking he and Ben to be aggressive, but when the result is 9-25 nights with a bunch of bad forces... So Ray, like Ben, had a stretch there where he was effective, but in the end Lillard eventually began to dominate the matchup and Miller was really our key guard fighting back.

Casspi ( C- ) -- well, and again after those 29rebs in t e first two Karl games, Omri is now settling in as an inefficient bench scrapper. And when you look for evidence of some of Karl's philosophies, Omri embracing his inner Tyreke (he even used a Euro step on one drive -- who knows he may have even learned it from Tyreke, or possibly Harden) and just attacking the hoop again and again for those across the lane flips could well be a reflection. Its always what he's wanted to do anyway, but these last few games its been too much, and they just aren't falling. Despite the lack of numbers I thought he made a positive contribution in his second half stint, giving us size and scrap if no real productivity. But as Karl auditions continue it would probably behoove him to have another good one soon.

Stats: 28min 4pts (2-3, 0-0, 0-0) 3reb 1ast 1stl 1blk 0TO
Hollins ( C+ ) --I almost hate to only give Ryan a C + for this game because for Ryan, this was probably as good as it gets. This was probably his A game. But I can't give an A to a player that played 28 minutes, scored 4 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. But the thing is, he did impact the game at times. He made a timely block of Leonards shot that resulted in a fast break. He ended up on the floor battling for a loose ball that again resulted in a fast break. He had a very timely steal that again resulted in a fast break. There were a couple of instances when he played outstanding defense on Aldridge. He also had one of the softest dunks I've ever seen on a alley oop from Miller. I guess that was a dunk, but hey, he made it. He got to play tonight, and although he didn't put up gawdy stats, He made a difference. --Baja

Stats: 26min 12pts (6-7, 0-0, 0-0) 2reb 10ast 2stl 0blk 3TO
Miller ( A+ ) -- this might be the last A+ Andre Miller earns in his long career. Because let's be honest, at his age every day that goes by decreases the odds of him ever notching another 12pt 10ast on 6-7 shooting game in only 26min. He, in fact, was the single most important player on our entire team tonight. Which is a terrible sign for your team, but another great one of the old guy picked up off the scrapheap a couple of weeks back. He came in immediately as a scorer again, and was simply too physical for a pathetic Steve Blake (if Dre is 29, then Blake looked at least 45 bumbling around out there). And while early on it was his scoring push that helped bump us back into the game, throughout the night it was Miller showing what a true PG can do, keeping his head up, leading the break, especially finding DWill again and again, and notching the first double figure assist game in over 2 months for a King. he had a huge impact on the game and helped turn it into a contest.

Stats: 15min 3pts (0-1, 0-0, 3-4) 6reb 2ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Evans ( C- ) -- Reggie got a C - because he grabbed six boards in fifteen minutes. He also had two assists, neither of which were by design. While I understand why, the idea of having Hollins and Evans on the floor at the same time is a bad one if it can be avoided. It puts tremendous pressure on the other three to score. I paid special attention to Reggie's defense off the ball, and on the ball when he's forced to the perimeter, and its terrible. Reggie couldn't guard Aldridge on the perimeter if he velcroed himself to him. He dodged bullet after bullet when he totally left Aldridge to help McCallum when he didn't need help. McCallum would fight through the pick, and there would both McCallum and Evans guarding Lillard, and Aldridge with a wide open shot, which fortunately he missed. Reggie did make a nice play when he fought for a board, pulled the ball away from Leonard, and passed it to McLemore for a corner three. Reggie is a great rebounder, but beyond that, he's a very limited player. --Baja

Williams ( A-? ) -- in truth I don't know how to grade this. DWill didn't actually play basketball this game. He just played dunk contest, which is really all he wants to do by instinct anyway. And so he didn't pass, he didn't rebound, he didn't defend...and yet he had a definite impact just getting out and running the floor again and again and having Andre Miller throw him alley oops. And that finishing was a major factor in our bench's effectiveness. So I don't really know how to grade this. It worked for us the same way a one dimensional 3pt shooter can turn a game if properly set up and covered for on the other end. Again and again somebody else got the stop, somebody else got the ball to Miller (or occasionally another guard), and again and again DWill ran down court and raced along the baseline until the guard threw it up for him to knock in with his hops. It was half a step up from Vivek's 4 on 5 cheery picker idea. But what if that cherry picker idea worked and the cherry picker had 18pts? That's a good grade right? And on the other hand what if that cherry picker had a -13 in his 22min? Did it really work? Well...DWill didn't cherry pick. He just wasn't effective at anything else, but was very effective out on the break catching long passes. So I'm calling this a good game. It was certainly one of the more memorable ones on the night.

it seems the Kings have really been injury riddled with their three best players whether it's Cousins, Gay or Collison missing games. I'm interested to know the amount of games the three players I mentioned have played together this season. Doesn't seem like many.

Ray McCallum is an interesting piece for us going forward. I'm still not convinced he's any good at running a team offense, but he has shown an ability to be a scoring guard that plays some D.

Wrt the poll, I voted Miller, Williams and no Casspi. I think Williams will fit the whole run up and down offense where he's just asked to score on dunks and open jumpshots like we saw a bit of this game, and if the Kings can resign him for cheap they probably will. I feel like Omri won't stick if he doesn't show the ability to hit an outside shot, but that depends on whether we make any other changes to the roster that would take away the need for Omri to be a playmaker.

I couldn't believe how many shots Portland was making in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. That had to play into the Kings's psyche. Now matter how hard they tried, they couldn't build enough momentum to get over the hump.

Overall I liked the effort and I hope Kings fans keep filing into STA.

Been looking for a comparison for Ray Mac, and the best I can come up with is a poor man's Mario Chalmers (no 3pt shot). Good defensively, decent ball-handler, below average playmaker for a PG, good, not great athlete, not a great scorer, but can do so at times.

Really, if he adds a 35-37% 3pt shot as a spot-up shooter to his game, he's a guy I think you can plug in at back-up PG for awhile. But he needs more qualities on offense to justify giving him minutes as he's not good enough defensively to justify keeping him on the court for that reason.

Well he has a lot of potential.

Ray has a lot of potential. I think he will continue to improve. That's why i think we should try to lock him in as the 2nd 3rd stringer for the long term. Hopefully he works his way into a bigger role.

Yeah. He seems to be in that Avery Bradley mold of point guard-sized player who can defend and score but can't actually play the point guard position to save his life. That said, there are still places for that sort of player in the right situation.

Can't see everything at the games like I can on TV, but wow, to see passing ability finally from a pg and use that athletic talent Williams has...

Lots of fun tonight, and as bad as Williams has been, I blame the FO for not bringing someone like Miller in the first place.

For the poll Brick just Andre, Casspi will probably yield just enough to leave town for greener pastures, Williams I'm not certain they want to invest in much longer he'll have to maintain this.

That poll is definitely an interesting question. Casspi is having his worst shooting and stealing year, but until we get a good look at what's available this offseason, Casspi should come back.

Was there this afternoon and really enjoyed the game and the play of our guys. I guess we can't prove that they played good defense but the effort was there. Now they face a tough road trip where their ability to play hard and compete will be well tested. Miller and McCallum make a good one two punch at PG.

The question for me is if Ray can be a scoring guard off the bench. He's clearly a player when he gets to start and play for long stretches. But I'm not sure he is a starting PG in this league, and if he can't come with energy and scoring off the bench in spot action, it may be his demise.

There is obviously no doubt that Casspi is having his worst season in terms of shooting from the 3-pt line and stealing the ball I guess, but let's not exaggerate, Casspi is having his best season in terms of scoring percentages, Casspi FG percentage is 47.8, is highest throughout his career, and was even higher before the all-star weekend, since then it seems like he struggles more to shoot the ball in high percentages, there is a little regression we can definitely sense.
Casspi is also having his best season in terms of scoring free-throw shots, 74 percents, again was doing better at it in the beginning of the season and regressed a little before the all-star weekend and until now.

Let's also not forget that Casspi has been really affective for the Kings this year, more than any other bench player for the Kings, he had a strong game against the Pelicans where he scored 22 points while replacing injured Rudy Gay and helped the Kings sail for the win, he was great in almost the entire games under coach Malone and looked very decent in the first two games under coach Karl, was able to tie his career high in rebounds with 12 boards and the game after it he was able to set a new record for himself with 17 rebounds, Casspi showed great effort and tenacity while developing a new aspect of his game which is attacking the paint and creating himself some lay-ups and fouls, he was also able to show that he can really space the floor for the Kings, and was responsible along with few other players for a lot of Kings runs and comebacks, Casspi manages to pass the ball really well and usually has a high awareness of what is occuring on the court when he plays.

I really believe Casspi should be a keeper for the Kings next year.

For all the players in the poll their resigning sources on what they bring in the open market.

Effort was there as was better control of the ball. A good decent bench wins a game like this, the best current bench can do on their "A" grade effort is get close then fade. Progress is being made for sure as you can clearly see Karl's style showing through. The Ray/Ben duo are i,proving and thriving finally. DWill and Omri fit this new style off the bench and would be better if they could start making their 3's, a big problem since they don't need to be guarded at the perimeter futher clogging the middle making life miserable for points in the paint. And Evans just doesn't seem to have a clue where he should be on defense at any point and on offense his spacing is more like trying to dance with the other Kings on the floor at the time further clogging up the middle. Ahh, but there is progress and you gotta love Miller's game off the bench.

I don't think its a given that any of our unrestricted freeagents will be retained. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Miller because of what he brings in experience and his knowledge of Karls system. But it would probably depend on the price. As far as Casspi goes, once again it probably comes down to his asking price, and who we might be able to acquire in his stead. Would you rather have a Casspi, or a Wilson Chandler as an example? Casspi would be where I draw the talent line in the sand, and anyone I'd choose over him would have to be above that line. Lets face it, Casspi has holes in his game, and one is an important one in Karls system. The ability to hit the 3 pt shot. Yes, he's having the worse year of his career, but he's never been a good 3 pt shooter in any year, last year being his best, which was just in the respectable range. So yes, I'd like to have him back, but if I can find someone that's better overall, I'd say goodbye to him.

If we can't do any better than Ryan Hollins as our backup center, I'll blow my brains out. I think this past year has proven that the backup center position is an important one, and to fill that role with a player that's slightly better than a mannequin is ridiculous. Especially when you spent the entire offseason, right up until the trade deadline trying to trade the only other player on the team (Thompson) that was capable of playing that position. Hollins seems like a nice guy and I wish him no ill will, but he should have "Use in case of emergency only"on the back of his jersey. Reggie Evans just doesn't fit with the direction this team seems to be going. He's a poor passer and ballhandler. He has little to no offensive game. Defensively, he's pretty good around the basket when matched up properly, but he's downright terrible away from the basket. He's a terrific rebounder, and apparently a great locker room guy. I don't know if those last two reasons are enough to keep him on the team unless he wants to play for the team minimum. And even then, I'd have to see if the money couldn't be better spent.

One thing has become obvious to me of late and watching last nights game in particular. Without Cousins on the floor, we have a huge drop in talent, and ability to match up in the post area. Last night I watched Portland throw one big after another at us. Lopez, 7 foot, Aldridge, 6'11", Kaman, 7 foot, Leonard, 7 foot, and thank god Freeland, a 6'11"player was injured and didn't play. We need a serious upgrade at the backup center position, and at the starting PF position, and both are important if we seriously plan on being a contending team. We can't go down the toilet everytime Cuz misses a game or two, nor should we lose a lead everytime Cuz goes to the bench. Anyway, I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

I like Ray...but I don't see him playing much next season if they really do plan on going after Ty Lawson. Maybe they can use him as a back up two guard? but then what to do with Nik...hmm so many tasks Pete has to take care of after April.

I'm a little confused at to why some think that McCallum can't be a PG on this team, whether as a future starter, of as the primary backup. I've seen constant improvment in his game since he got here, and last night, he made some beautiful passes for assists on plays that he created. At last count he had 5 assists in the game and easily could have had 8 or 9 if his teammates could have made their shots, three of which were right under the basket. And he had zero turnovers. The game before, 1 turnover. He usually has no more than 1 or 2 turnovers per game with, if menory serves, the Celtic game being the exception when he had around 4 or 5 turnovers. So I'm not sure what anyone is watching, or if they are indeed watching at all. I'm not saying he's perfect, but he's certainly not a liability, and for the most part, he's in the plus part of the +/-. I know its just one game, but I was very impressed with him last night.

Right now he's 5.3pts 1.8ast, and has a huge negative (-11.8 per 100 possessions) +/- on the season while playing 21% of our minutes. There appears to be some talent there, but he's a chucker at heart. I don't know if that can be cured. He takes shots out there that I don't think a Andre Miller would have taken at 16.

The real problem is he's such a modest talent I'm not sure what to do with him. He's clearly good enough to be in the NBA, but he seems to exist as a #2 1/2 PG. If he's your backup, its a very weak one. But he would be unusually good as a #3 PG. He's really not as big as claimed, so its kind of hard to make him just a straight 5th guard in the tradition of 5th guards who can take over at backup SG if you lose one of yours. Its just an odd fit. He feels like the sort of talent that lottery teams have all over their rosters, where you talk yourself into it, but the fact is that you are losing ground to the good team's guys whenever you play them too many minutes.

If we had a real stud as a PG #1, could we get away with him as a limited minute main backup? Sure. But is that all we want to do there? Get away with it? And what happens if your stud gets hurt? And Dre adds an extra level of complexity to the situation. Andre Miller is flat better, even now. If Collison came back, or if we got Lawson...does Dre come back? If he does, he's going to be the backup. Unless Collison was the backup to Lawson. Ray gets lost in all that. On the other hand for a late season lottery team Dre has been steady enough that when Cuz is out there I've felt like maybe Ray/Dre is just enough to let us have a chance. But again, is that enough? I don't think so unless we're badly winning more than just C and SF every night.

He's cheap, and a personal fav of PDA, he could always show up here again. But I can't help feel this last month is absolutely critical for his future. He's definitely one of the guys auditioning for Karl.

He is a scoring guard...not a facilitator. That's what I'm watching....your trying to turn him into something he isn't and those assists are "empty" assists. He will get a few assists here and there but that doesn't mean he can do that consistently. I know...he is a second year player but I think he can be better utilized as a scoring guard off the bench to give some offensive fire power because as long as he plays with the aggression we have seen, I'll take that type of Ray.

We should stick with Ray he's going to be a good player It's easy to forget he's a second year guard out of the 2nd round With everything that's happened this season. Of course he's a scoring guard But to call him a chucker is taking it far BTW most pg's in today's nba are scoring guards. The addition of Andre Miller should not become a factor on Ray going forward I mean seriously Andre is 38 years old.

Ray is here. Ray is cheap. but you can sign players of Ray's caliber as free agents every single year. You don't sit around waiting for players of Ray's caliber to realize it. You wait for Cuz? Sure. You wait for Ben...eh....unless somebody offers you something nice. But Ray's high end is...dunno. A support guy. Doesn't mean you dump him for the heck of it. Does mean you don't sit around and wait on fungible pieces if there is something else to be done. People forget too that as a 4yr college guy he's going to be 24 here in a few months. That's not old, but like the Jimmer thing it means that he is likely pretty close to the type of player he's going to be already. He's not 20 and still learning the game. In fact that's one of his advantages.

I really like the energy Casspi brings to this team, but I don't think he'll be back next year. He'll probably go to a contending team like Miami or LA. While Casspi does a lot of things well, he also does a lot of things that aren't so well. He's like J-Will. When he does amazing things, they truly are amazing and make you go 'WOW!", but when he does something stupid, it makes you go "WTF??". Casspi has both his "WOW" and "WTF" moments. I think his regressing 3pt shoot is a bit of a concern. He's someone who I'd love to have back though.

He came back to us on purpose. While all the stupidity this year has to have made him think twice, if Karl continues to feature him down the stretch of the season I would think we'd still have a pretty good case for him...if PDA wanted him back himself.
