George Karl Officially Signed (Sacramento Bee Tweets)

It appears that they haven't worked out the details of his contract in regards to a possible lockout year. The CBA has an early out in it and we could be looking at another lockout, and a possible cancellation of an entire season. Now I don't think that will happen, but if your under contract for that year, you'd want to know whether your going to get paid or not. I doubt it's a big issue, but it does have to be settled.

Yes, sir. To add, our reputation as having a clueless ownership contributes to the difficulty in signing free agents.

Agreed, given equal money and opportunity, a FA may not choose to play for the Kings because of this mess that the FO created. It will take a couple years of winning, improving and good work from the FO to move pass it.

The thing is, with the Kings leaking that it's a done deal before it actually is a done deal... they're just going to give in to whatever Karl wants on those terms. It's also just kind of rude. In negotiation, all your power lies in the ability to walk away.

Sources confirm what is holding up Karl deal is bad Mexican food GM PDA had last night has caused him to remain in a Sac area bathroom all morning-more details to come

Conflicting reports now emerging. King's GM is a vegetarian and sources close to situation claim PDA had salad last night, analytics show Mexican food not an efficient source of daily vitamins/minerals

This is a pretty good summary of the entire saga. Dueling leaks, believe what you will.

It means to me that they have a coach with enough clout, respect and balls (not saying malone didnt have those) to tell the meddling owner to shut his pie hole and take a hike when he tries to interject himself into things he knows nothing about.

I just want to say that I take offense to the comments about Mexican food. I'm currently sitting on my patio eating Chile Relleno's, Rice, and Frijoles, being chased down by a cold cervesa. Quite tasty, and nourishing. I and Mexico welcome George Karl into the fold. :D

This is making things really difficult. I thought I was supposed to be angry because the team leaked something that was done but was holding off on the press conference. But now maybe I'm supposed to be angry because the team leaked something that WASN'T done.

But wait, Jones got his info from "league" sources and not "team" sources? So...I'm supposed to be angry that the team DIDN'T leak something that wasn't done. Is that right? I'm so confused.

This is why you just listen to Carmichael Dave on this... He's correct a lot more than not.

First thing Karl does is trade cousins for vin baker, I hear he's dying to un-retire ;)

In all honesty, I'm actually really looking forward to what kind of personnel changes Karl makes. Not only does this team need a shot in the arm, but we also need some shooters, and a more stable bench.

The trade deadline is next Monday and Karl won't coach until Tuesday so I seriously doubt we'll see any big changes until the offseason. Even then, I'm not sure how much input Karl is going to have on personnel decisions. Whether true or not, the word was that Karl was going to "stay in his lane" and just be coaching.

What I will be interested to see is if somehow Karl is able to get more productivity out of the current bench. At this point, being a poor 2nd unit would be a major upgrade so the bar isn't set all that high, but still.

Plot twist.. George Karl hires Mike Malone as an assistant

Then Malone takes over for Karl when Karl retires in 4 years. ❤️❤️

I would assume, and it's probably silly of me to assume anything, but I would assume, that during the course of their conversations (PDA and Karl), that if any deals were on the table and pending, PDA would have advised Karl of those deals. I'm fairly sure, knowing Karl, he would have offered his opinion. I have to believe that the Kings have their fingers in the pie somewhere. Doesn't mean a deal will get done, but it won't surpirse me if there are a couple of moves at the deadline.

we have to respect the decisions made by this front office, whether we agree with them wholeheartedly or despise them with a passion.

Respect? Hell no. What the FO did was wrong. This is like saying if my friend was mugged on the street that I have to respect the muggers decision. Completely asinine.

Just looked at my calendar and it says today is wednesday the 11th. I was under the impression that the trade deadline was February 19th, which according to my calendar is one week from tomorrow on thursday. However your right about Karls first game being the next day. However he will have time to get in a couple of practices, and probably consult on any deals that might be in the mix.

The talent is available with the 2nd unit for it to be productive, it just... needs to do it. Casspi and Landry are already playing good basketball. Still not convinced Sessions went from a top 6th man/fringe starter for 8 years to ultra scrub in 40 games. Nik is going through rookie struggles, but 2nd half of the year is often the time when struggling rookies start stringing games together. Reggie does Reggie when he gets minutes.

Honestly, the biggest thing Karl can do is just tell D-Will to peace it, and give Casspi all the minutes D-will has gotten the past two months. That alone should clear up some issues with the 2nd unit

I refer you to the Steinbeck novel Tortilla Flat which proves one can be quite healthy on a diet of tortillas and beans.

Excerpt:

Teresina Cortez has a menagerie of nine healthy babies and children, who all live on nothing but tortillas and beans, but nevertheless are found amazingly healthy by the school doctor.

The point is if the season had not been "wasted" with the Malone situation, odds are very likely that we miss the chance to hire Karl. Forget about 20 odd games sooner or later,....this is much bigger picture.

This is working out for the better. We have a much better chance of doing some damage in the next couple seasons with Karl as our man, instead of Malone or anyone else who realistically could have been available.

This is a huge deal for this team
Not sure if you're understanding exactly what happened...

We had an opportunity to bring him aboard right away. Meaning we might have had a good coach take over for a good coach (rather than a poor coach take over for a good coach) and at least have some chance at maintaining the level play. Or why not just bring Karl aboard at the beginning of the year?

Don't get me wrong, I think Karl was the right decision at this point in time, but he would have been the right decision the moment you let Malone go. I'm not willing to say "nothing that happened in the past matters because we have Karl now" because that would be highly intelligent. The FO essentially threw away a season of competing for a playoff spot, threw away a year of our roster developing chemistry, and made this organization look like a joke (which will have consequences when trying to lure free agents or keep them here).

Pete,

Chuck asked that I pass along that this applies to you to:

Interesting thing about this, Carl Landry retweeted this video yesterday. I might be wrong but I read into it that Landry himself is not a fan of the analytics. Adds further fuel to belief that the players were on the same page as Mike Malone but those beliefs were directly against what the front office believes in.

Napear said Kings players were talking about Barkley's comments today

I'm sure PDA expects Karl to "stay in his lane" to a certain extent and part of what's taking this so long to iron out probably is defining the lines between what Karl has say in and what PDA has say in.

Of course, PDA is incredibly naive and whatever lines he thinks he will or will not draw don't amount to much as Karl has the final trump card, playing time. If PDA comes to Karl and says I want this player or that player and it doesn't fit what Karl wants, PDA could tell him "I'm the GM and it's my decision, I make the moves", to which Karl only has to respond "sure, go right ahead, and your acquisition can enjoy keeping the end of the bench warm". Add to that that Karl is much tougher to fire with a supposed 4 yr/16-20M deal and the resume/clout he carries with him, and any threat from PDA would be easily brushed off.

This will be far more on PDA to get along and make it work with Karl than vice versa, Karl having to show he can get along and make it work with PDA. Karl is here to help fix the mess PDA created, pressure isn't on him. And if it doesn't work between them it's most likely PDA who hits the door, not Karl.

BTW, my guess is Karl has considered Sac a serious option for the last couple months and has been doing his homework, watching and scouting us. I'd be shocked if he didn't already have clear thoughts on players he's like to move and what types to replace them with, who and what he wants surrounding Cuz.
