Gary Payton wants in...

Payton is a yapping little jackass unfortunately.

I'm not one million percent against the idea, but you know what, it would be introducing yet another twitchy wildcard to a twitchy situation. I'm already concerned that Karl behaves himself given his tendency to wear out his welcome and pee people off, I'm deeply concerned about the front office doing the same, and there is every possibility Payton could run his mouth at DeMarcus and end up getting decked. There's only a couple months left in the season, this might be better experimented with over the summer/next year than in this volatile mess.

P.S. Payton was also a vocal supporter of Seattle stealing Sacto's team in case people have forgotten. Maybe they could hire Spencer Hawes as a big man coach next.

I remember GP as a trash talker on the court to opponents but I don't remember him stirring stuff up with teammates? He was competitive as hell.

Would depend on the role but I'd be in favor of giving him a hands-on role in player development, particularly defense and allow him to work with our guards. I think he'd help Ben fulfill his potential on that end of the court.

I know GP has a reputation when in front of a mic but I also know from some things he's done down here around Oakland, he's different behind the scenes, much more laid back. His Fox gig is more to get a reaction. Also, not sure how many are aware but when Kobe was young he called up GP and they worked that summer 1v1 on his defense. Kobe went on to become a repeat All-NBA defender. Kobe has credited him with some of that. He also has worked with Bay Area guys from Lin to Lillard, runs camps in Vegas. The guy loves being around the game and working with players.

Of course, for that role I'd prefer Christie but if GP is genuinely interested and Doug isn't, I'd listen.

GP as an assistant coach? well he is outspoken so he has that going for him....he might be a respectable assistant...you just never know these things. I wouldn't rule it out...he can teach the guards a thing or two on defense because none of them can play any.

I would imagine that Karl will retire after this contract with the Kings. If that's the case I wonder if you want to groom a successor on the bench or just go a different direction when his contract is up.

I mean....

The war is over. We won! Im happy to bring Payton's tax dollars and appeal to potential free agents into the fold. Assuming, that is, that he and DMC don't combust.

Yeah I hate everything Seattle based as much as the next guy but could you really blame him? Along with Kemp, he was the face of the franchise all throughout the 90's.

That might be, and I do understand it from his perspective. But that is still a really foul image to have associated with the Kings. Kings fans have been eager to bend over for the soap ever since Vivek took over, but at a certain point you have to find your pride and say no, we're Sacramento and we fought too hard. Golden State worshippers, Seattle partisans...gotta have enough pride to say "**** that" at a certain point.

See, I have a memory like an elephant, and no war or battle is over until I say it is. I'll probably be 80 and hunt down some dude who took a girl from me when we were 20.

I'm just mature enough to accept sincere sounding apologies from anybody who's ever wronged me however. If Gary wants to release a "the Sonics were my franchise and I'll always love them, but I always had respect fro Sacramento fans and never wanted to see you lose your team" statement, we'd be cool on that front. Still worry about unleashing a loose cannon into an unstable environment though.

I've thought about this for awhile and am not sure what to think. There is no questioning Payton's physical skills and competitive drive. Has he ever coached 'cause that's very different. After listening to Karl's interview and how he is backing off and letting his coaches do more, maybe it's not a bad idea for all involved. I think in some ways Gary is a younger version of Karl at a time when Karl is slowing down. Karl and Payton might both like that. Gary could be very good but I sure don't know with certainty. I very much like that the Glove knows defense and the effort it takes. We may need a guy like that.

In Payton's interview, he said he wanted to coach Boogie as he thought he had a lot to say that could be helpful. The part that gave me a niggle of discomfort is that Gary, like the rest of the world, seems to have missed that Boogie is changing/maturing like a freight train at full throttle. I'm not sure where Boogie is getting this change, probably Malone, but Gary would need to recognize that in some ways, Boogie needs a wise father like friend and not a coach. That's my perception. I have a hard time envisioning Gary in that role but who knows, Gary is getting older and might understand.

I'd be happy to have Gary aboard. He plans to chat with Karl. He can always be fired. ;)

Bringing in Shaq for publicity/marketing was awful. Mullin's been atrocious as an adviser. The general GS hand-me -downs and sloppy-seconds has long gotten on my nerves. However, for GP I could see a clear benefit to him working with players on defense that no other previous Laker/Warrior/Nugget offered. It's hands on, it's not for publicity or because Vivek is in awe and wants to lean on his every word as with Mullin or Shaq pretending to care while spending the year in ATL. That he and Karl know how to work together should limit any knuckleheadedness. Yeah, made that word up.

I generally don't blame him for the Sea fiasco. It was his second home. If we were in a similar situation I'd fully expect everyone from Webb to Vlade to Doug to BJax to say and do the same. But in general I'm more concerned with improving our perimeter defense more than any GP/Sea ties and he's regularly coaching and working with players so if I'm considering taking a risk, it'd be on a gym rat who loves coaching defense. Wouldn't see me complaining if GP was schooling Ben or future acquisitions on defense after practice every day.

Still, first choice would be Doug.

I know he did this as part of looking tough on TV. But I can't see him getting along with many people with that attitude. Unless he comes in much more humble than that.

See this is exactly how I feel when Kings fans hate on Hawes. But somehow it applies to Hawes but not Payton? The Kings traded Hawes away, and Seattle is his FIRST home. So ... ? Oh well, don't mean to derail the thread.

Not the same in any way...
We drafted Hawes, we supported him and cheered him on for years. We also accepted the way he runs with his hands flailing around like a pansy.

3 years. So what you're saying is that if a guy plays 3 years for a team or is drafted by a team he is expected to show loyalty to it at all costs? He'd been on a different team for 2 years at that point, and as we already know he's the kind of guy that can't keep his mouth shut about things. Seattle is his hometown, of course he'd be advocating getting a team back to Seattle! Anyway, as I said, I don't wanna derail the thread.

On the topic at hand, my only concern would be GP's potential "yappering". It's one thing to work with guys over the summer, another to be a full time assistant coach with a team. But if he can teach our guards to play much needed defense it would be a welcome sight.

I'm a little uneasy with GP. I'd prefer long term professional coaches, with a predictable history. Guys who have been around awhile and have seen it all from a coaching stand point.

Oh man it's tough for me... I LOVED GP's game and the man knows defense... but since he probably cannot coach with a gag in his mouth, and that would be mandatory for me to support him, I have to pass.

I'm not a fan of bringing in GP. He burned a bridge with Sacramento when he campaigned to take our Kings. Now he expects us to be cool? Nah.

That's like a guy trying to take your girl and then wanting to hang out with you.

Sorry GP. I'd rather have Doug Christie.

I hear what your saying...
He doesn't need to be loyal at all, that's the wrong word, I think he should have shown some respect and sympathy for the fans getting their hearts ripped out that cheered for him for 3 years.
