Game -4: Sacramento Kings vs. Brooklyn Nets 10/15/14 4:30 AM PST, 7:30 AM EST, 7:30 PM China Time

Signs of life from Derrick and Ben

Ben's actually been pretty good in the preseason so far. 3 good games, one off game, and solid defense all around.

Per 36, thats about 16.1/2.3/1.8 on very good percentages. I'll take that any day of the week from Ben. Ideally you would like to see more of an all-around game (weak rebounding and playmaking. Ironically, that statline looks similar to something Kevin Martin would put up) but the focus should be on getting Ben to look like an NBA caliber player before asking him to do too much. Baby steps.

Woke up early to watch this game and here were just a few pointers about our young guys.

McLemore- Ben had a great game. He played 39 minutes and shot 7-13 for 22pts with 3rebs and 4tos. He was being very aggressive on offense and had his foot set on everything shot. This is very exciting for us because this is what we expected out of him last year. He made the right passes and took the right shots. A few times he turned it over, but it was nothing major. I'll talk about defense in a bit

Stauskas- Nik had an ok game. He played 29 mins and shot 4-10 with only 1-5 from 3pt. He had 9pts and 3asts. I don't think he had many opportunities to touch the ball very much. The only times they really fed him the ball was when Omri or Collison found him wide open while they were trying to drive. Or if coach called a play for him. I think he was just a bit off, but I don't know why coach wouldn't give him more opportunities..especially with that crap lineup we went with at the end of the game and in OT.

Defense for Nik and Ben- I think it was decent to bad. They switched when it was unnecessary and it seemed like Jack and Williams got the best of them. I think there were a lot of mental errors and they didn't know how to defend the PnR, but a lot of it wasn't their fault. Hollins for some reason lost track of his man a lot in PnR situations forcing Stauskas to foul a lot. 5PFs today. I think they both struggled equally, but Ben has the nod.

Moreland- He's not ready. That's about as simple as I can say. He had a lot of goal tends, I remember at least 2. It says he had 2 BS, but I don't remember it.. that's how ineffective he was. 14 mins 2pts 1reb 2BS with probably a lot of time at Reno soon. I honestly don't want to see him step floor in the NBA until he learns to at least rebound. He looked horrible out there and invisible.

Taped the game and watched the first before 9:15 and watched the second half before noon, didn't see OT because I didn't record it. I liked the part I saw better.

You guys have covered the play well in your comments. I enjoyed what I saw very much. Leaving Cuz, Evans a Landry out allowed me to see a lot of the rest. The Kings displayed a lot of movement and ball sharing. Also took a lot of good shots and made a fair portion. Showed some progress as a team.

I'll be at my first game on Sat against the Israeli team. Looking forward to it.

If Ben finds himself a starting backcourt of Ben/Nik would be lethal down the road and it's why we picked Nik they believe the 2 can play together. Guys like Curry and Westbrook weren't pgs coming out of college either and I think Nik had better court vision in college then the 2.

We really haven't seen Nik handle much though. That'll be the big key to whether or not he can transition to the 1

Collison has looked really good for us at PG. He's running the offense, pushing the tempo at times, knocking down shots, and getting in the face of the opposing ball handler. It's also our deepest position right now with Collison, Sessions, and McCallum all having some experience as a starting PG in the NBA and all playing well right now. What do people see in Nik Stauskas that makes them think he's a better long-term option at PG than the three we've already got?

I think Nik has great handles for a SG, but probably decent handles for a PG. I think if he was at PG, he could get at least 6apg. I hope we can see some of Nik at the 1 this preseason. He doesn't get the ball a lot, and I think we should rest all our starters for the last preseason game. There was only one play where I saw Nik get a rebound and dribble up the court and take a nice shot, however he missed.

And now NBA considering shortening 3 pt line to conform with FIBA international standard. Going to 22.1 ft from 23.9 ft. Imagine how much more game will merely revolve around constant camping out at 3 pt line. Then there's NBA looking at cutting length of game down to 44 minutes from 48 - with four 11 minute quarters. "Tightening up" the game NBA claims is ultimate goal. There are no doubt a few changes NBA needs to make but not these.

Can we have Stern back now?

All this change nonsens fix the damn refs that all.

you can't really "fix the damn refs." there will always be accounting for human error. what you can do, however, is minimize that error by slackening the rule book considerably; light contact results in way too many foul calls in the contemporary nba, and i've long felt that the league has damaged its own product in the last decade or so by making the fans watch what often amounts to a glorified free throw contest...

with a massive and complex rule book, the refs have to keep their eyes on far too much, and the increasing speed of professional basketball creates an environment of controversy when those whistles inevitably rain down, even with an ever-expanding replay system in place. consequently, re-calibrating foul calls to a more reasonable level would "tighten up the game" by limiting the number of free throw stoppages we're forced to endure...

This is what I'm talking about any contact is a foul and now everyone falls on 3s and get a call 50% of the time. Don't even get me started on the superstar don't blow on him fouls.

Yea the NBA should stop trying to screw with the game. Leave the length of the game alone, leave the 3pt line alone, leave the 82 game season alone. If you want to make some changes, make the replay system cover more calls and be able to be reviewed faster. Especially all types of goaltending. It is very quick and easy to review and see if the ball hit the backboard first or not, and they seem to always get the call wrong

Also hold the officials to a higher standard. They were just awful last season. And maybe start fining them for obvious horrible calls and pathetic technical/flagrant foul calls

Taped the game and watched it at a godly hour. I think D-Will and Omri are just dreadful. Omri a little less so but still pretty poor basketball. We have no backup SF. Liked what I saw out of Nick and our PG's looked good as well. Also BM looked a lot better on both sides of the ball. Jury is still out on Ben but he does appear to be improving incrementally. But D-Will has got to go. He is a bust of monumental proportions. At lease WE didn't draft him in the first round. that would have been a tragedy ! Ball movement looked pretty good and defense was fair. No Cousins but still held our own on rebounds. Lopez had his way but his way aint gonna win many games anyway. I think they did a pretty good job. Got the game to overtime and ran out of gas. But all around a very solid if not a bit sloppy pre season game. We need to see more Casspi because if he cant be a factor at the SF position they are going to need to bring someone else in who can give them quality minutes behind Rudy. I see no sign that losing IT's scoring is going to hurt this team whatsoever but I do see much better ball movement and more players involved. And the defense at the PG position has improved dramatically. Cant wait to see them in San Antonio..... at a DECENT HOUR of the DAY....

I know about 43 people who refuse to watch until the quarters are one minute shorter. They also refuse to watch until the 3 point line is moved up a foot closer.

The NBA is going to explode here soon. Mark my words.

Didn't get a chance to watch this game and NBA TV is not replaying the games tomorrow either...so I guess boxscore and reading through here will suffice. Looks like Ben had a impressive shooting night percentage wise, good to see. I know this is preseason and all but giving up 129 points? Wow...so much for becoming more defensive oriented huh?

The game went to overtime where we kept the 3rd stringers in (Ray, Stauskas?, Bmac, Casspi, Moreland i think--with Deonte Burton getting minutes too) from 4th quarter. Nets lit up from 3-pt line. There were some nice sparks from Ben last night--if he can stay that consistent and confident, then there might be hope. Casspi took a while to knock down his 3s; I didn't look at the box score but he did brick a few wide open 3s before finally knocking a couple.

I must say it's been 4/5 games I can't say anything really that negative about the PG play imo it's pretty much carried us in the Preseason. I must say Darren Collison has EXCEED my expectations I thought Sessions would beat him out easy for the starting spot but I actually don't care who starts play them both if Ben/Nik can't hit open jumpers during the regular season. What a breathe of fresh air both these guy's have been, those two along with Cousins are the only 3 people on this squad I trust/relax when the ball is in there hands.

PDA made two quality signings this off season

Good video on Ben's game.....it would be awesome if he could string 3-5 of these together before having some off games....more of these and less of the off games. I watched most of the game but not much of the OT and I can say that I recall him only forcing 1 shot. The shots came to him mostly.

I also thought that he played very solid .......he still leaves guys to help or sag and they are open for the 3 but he's not the only one on this team that does that. Is that the method Malone wants or is that the players not staying home and keeping their assignment.

Bens dribbling has improved quite a bit....last year he would dribble off his leg in the open court. This year he can sustain the dribble to the hole. He also is good enough to dribble drive but needs to improve his finishing ability. I do like when he drives and stops for that little floater/jump shot in the lane.

Can you post his stats from last year for a comparison.
