Football. no not Futbol

If that's "football," then how come you can't use your feet?

As far as that stuff you're talking about... eh... the Aussies do it better. Pads are for punks.

It's Football because we call it Football. The first thing done in an NFL game is called a kickoff.

Personally I like this explanation....

lol

Lets take a little history lesson. "Football" as we know it today, started centuries ago in a country far, far, away. However, it wasn't called "Football" and it wasn't even "Football" as we know it today. Football was discovered by college students who wanted to play a different sport. They would've played the other sports, but they were just too boring. Years ago, these college students took a look at the available sports. Rugby and Soccer were the two main sports that influenced their "Football" ideas. So technically, "Football" is a form of Soccer.

Anyway, I'll skip the rest of the history, since it's not important. What IS important is how "Football" was played back in the day. The college students decided that they wanted a "rougher" sport that was similar to soccer and rugby. So, they made "Football". There were no rules, except to get the ball to the goal. So, as a result, there tended to be a lot of kicking. Since you use your foot to kick people, and since there is a ball in the game, they decided to call it football.

I like both sports, and I can see the genesis from the world's football to our football and Aussie football and rugby. But it would make more sense for ours to be called American rugby or something so we could call the game the rest of the world plays by its proper name. Its kind of hard to have a serious discussion of world football and call it soccer, you look like a tool when doing so unless you're talking to another American. Oh well.

Reminds me off the time when my friends in elementry school created a game called flatball© Like most public schools the balls that they gave us were usually falling a part, so we took a flat volley ball and played on the blacktop basketball court. The only rule was to make the basket. Nothing hurt more then having the heaviest kid in the class fall and land knee first on your crotch.
