First of the possible assistant coaches?

a developmental coach?

what westphal needs to do is get an assistant coach who focuses on defense.. he did say he wants a guy who had head coach experience

guys who come into mind..

1. terry porter (defensive oriented)
2. Terry Stotts
3. Jeff Bzdelik (did i name it right?)

how bout eric musselman :D perfect Xs and Os kind of assistant right :D
would maloofs save more money if they brought reggie back as an assistant?

in his presscon that i watched in youtube westphal said "he is a better coach now than he was before" lets hope so! let us hope

Actually that might be good for the growth of our young players.....Afterall you can't win two D League Coach of the Years in a row for being a bum. ;)

Sorry but I think you're missing a key point. A developmental coach is exactly what could help DEVELOP the young players we've got and are getting.

Gates has won two championships in the D League where players go who have talent but haven't DEVELOPED it enough yet to make it in the NBA itself.

Westphal will pick the coaches he can work with who will hopefully balance out his strengths and weaknesses. I wouldn't have a problem with someone like Gates on the bench at all.

I think that he is a very good addition to the staff, if he joins. I really want to see Porter on the bench too. Then I would view our coaching staff as respectable and would cross my fingers for stability.

If he comes he's not going to be the lead assistant or anything, so especially given the youth likely on or team next season, why not?

What ever happened to Elston Turner. He's certainly a defensive minded coach. I know he has ties to Adelman and perhaps that will be held against him, but I think he would be a good addition.

Yeah, if he's the best coach in the D league, he almost has to be good at developing talent and that's what we are trying to do with our young players and the players we get with our draft picks. It would be a pretty good coaching staff with him and Terry Porter.

A couple of brain cells are trying to tell me he's in Houston with Rick. Maybe? I know he has at least one of his former assistants with him...

I'm sure it would be held against him, esepcially since he too took to the airwaves defending the Adelman era in the wake of the firings.

But thing is he's already got a gig -- Rick took him with him as his lead assistant down in Houston, where oddly the two were somehow able to run an elite defensive team despite only having one player taller than 6'9". I can see no possible reason he'd want to ditch Rick to come back here.

Yep.

He interviewed for D'Antoni's position at Phoenix, so it's clear that he'd leave for the right head coaching position, but I don't think we could offer him anything he'd be interested in.

Agreed. Westphal would have 3 primary assistants too with him on the bench. So bringing in Gates would not exclude him from also bringing in two more establish NBA assistants/coaches like Ellie and Porter. Considering how much youth we will have on our team, having someone whose expertise is developing young players seems freaking brilliant to me. Between Coachie and him, any young player on the Kings with talent and a good work ethic would seem to have a high chance at being successful.
