Finishing At The Hoop

Has anyone else noticed, that the Kings have an uncanny ability to miss wide open layups? They get SOOO many looks right under the hoop, wide open, and they can't hit them... For a team that relys on that play to work for them to open up the three point line, you would think the Kings would have the layups down pat... Bobby Jackson is the only one that consistently finishes, everyone else it's a tossup... What's up with that...

Good point. In fact, VERY good point.

I don't always share it in the PBP thread, but I can't even count the number of times I've screamed at my TV because what should have been an easy two ended up being nothing...

I hae a flat spot on my forehead beceause of blown lay ups and "dunks" that clanged out. Not sure what the soultion is except practice.

It's called lack of athleticism -- Kings don't have the personnel to turn some of those layups into dunks, and with KG roaming the paint, there's always a little extra fear that he's going to get your shot if you don't get it off the glass quickly, probably leading to a few more misses than usual. Not since Keon Clark (yeah, I said it) have the Kings had solid athleticism around the basket. Too bad he was a headcase.

We value shooting above all else. And unfortunately, it is so often the case that great shooters are not great athletes. Think the great athletes rarely feel forced to become true shooters.

Bottomline -- our team is normally the best in the league at sticking the J, but the cost of that is that we are likely just about the worst at converting layups. Everything is below the rim, and taller/longer teams can effect every shot.

Thing is there are a lot of other teams out there with fans bemoaning "why can't we hit an open shot".

Yep, seems that kings are becomign known for the missed layups.
Many of them are great sjooters, yet when you stick them right under the basket, with noone around them, chances are they'll miss.
