Well, I've been thinking about this today, and even though I am a big fan of Westphal, and I can definitely understand why he handled the situation the way that he did, I still think, in retrospect, that regardless of the outcome of the game, there was a problem with letting Tyreke take the last play and putting him back in in OT, for the following reasons:
1. Tyreke was having a bad game. The play at the end was a good one (Isolated on Kobe, he was supposed to drive and had a good chance of either getting the bucket or a foul). However, part of the learning process is to learn how to acknowledge that you are having a bad night and that perhaps letting your teammates execute that night is preferable. There is certainly no shame in that and it's not backing down. It's called trusting your teammates.
2. The team was doing really well without him in OT. While it's important to build Tyreke's confidence, it is just as important to build the rest of the team's confidence. There will be times when they will have to execute down the stretch, or at least help Tyreke execute, and they will not learn to do that if it's only Tyreke making the final play in every game. I'm sure it was also very frustrating for the players who were on the court to lose the momentum they had because Tyreke was slowing down the pace instead of pushing forward like they were doing until then.
Anyway, I have faith in coach Westphal that he knows what he's doing and will make sure that the team chemistry does not diminish because of these things. Perhaps when KMart comes back things will be more balanced status-wise.
