Something like 97% of the national sports press had Oden consensus #1. Without the injuries it really would be a different story. It seems when you get 7'+ guys they don't have a lick of skill or they are wire thin. When you find one that can fill the frame and actually play its a once a decade type of player. That's why they had to pick Oden.
I said it this year and it was probably the case with Oden and Durant. Sometimes you lose the lottery when you win. When one player is the consensus guy and you will be second guessed for eternity if you don't pick him, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. This year there were a lot of guys that just weren't "sure things". Quite a few are playing nicely while everybody's top pick sits on the sidelines.

You take Oden everytime and twice on Sundays in that situation. Dominant big men are a huge chunk of the history of titles in the NBA. High scoring SFs...not so much.

He's just a gigantic lane clogger. A complimentary piece. He's not a Hakeem or shaq or Duncan. Bigs do win most of the time but he's not one of those bigs. Durant is more than just a high scoring SF. And ok this day in age your so called theory doesn't add up when you got Lebron, Carmelo, and Durant that are all SF's. Carmelo and Lebron are in position for a title, and durants team is well on the way to being a contender.

I've followed college basketball for a long time. Prior to that draft, I think just about everyone in the country would have taken Oden. There were scouts that suggested that Durant was somewhat overrated. I questioned his ability to play defense at the time. He appeared on the surface to be a somewhat soft player who took a lot of bad forced shots in college. That was somewhat confirmed in his first year in the league where he scored a lot of points, but he took a lot of shots to do it. To his credit, he's imporved in just about every aspect of the game.
But to think anyone was stupid for taking Oden at the time, is just forgetting everything prior to the draft and only seeing the results now. I wonder if anyone at Oklahoma would admit who they might have taken if they had the first pick in the draft.

These draft experts are wrong too many times. So I go off of what I see. Oden was slow off his feet. Had minimal offense. Great defense because he was so massive and long. But to say it again he was really slow off of his feet. In durant I saw fire in him. He reminded me of a baby Jordan. His body is still kinda thin but it's starting to fill in.
And yet, 10 of the past 11 NBA title teams have had a certified "big man" on their team. That won't change if Cleveland wins. If the Nuggets win, you've got Nene/Kenyon Martin, who are pretty solid big men. The team most likely to win this year is (ugh) the Lakers. They're still winning w/o Kobe. Who do they have on the inside?

Slow off his feet? Greg Oden was one of the most explosive 7 footers I've ever seen.

Here's a video if you need some help. He doesn't get up like Dwight, but he gets off his feet pretty damn quick for being 7'0 260.
