Draftexpress grades on pt guards.

Cool article, in some respects.

I wish they could have come up with some decent metrics that weren't all about shooting, though. I want a PG that defends, and that passes well and often. The article doesn't really touch on those things. :-/

Well it does touch on passing a little, but your right about the defense part. Basketball is about putting the ball in the basket, and the team that does it the most, wins. No denying that defense plays a part in all of that. Rightly or wrongly though, if you can shoot the basket ball with a high degree of profiency, it will make up for a lot of deficiencys in other areas.

The league is full of players that make a living being spot up shooters. Unless your a big, its a little tougher making it on defense alone. There are some, like Bowen. But not that many.

The only "stat" that gives some insight into defense for PG's is steals. Steals, assists and assist/turnover ratio can tell a bit about ball handling which is major item in NBA. Lot of PG's shooting 15+ PPG but none have more than 5-6 assists/gm and most are low in steals. Defense has to be seen by the experts in guards. The next young Gary Payton everyone needs. The skinny Rubio looks great but his very slight build can be a problem in the NBA.

Rubio should be able to put on a bit of weight. He's only 18 (or is it 19 now?)...I was super scrawny at that age no matter how much I ate. I wasnt really able to bulk up til about 22.

I think that there are some other useful stats. A player with a high Roland Rating but a tepid PER, for example, kind of has to be a good defender. Where available, the stats of opposing PGs can also be enlightening. But only for NBA, since you're not going to find numbers like that for college or international players. Available stats on draft prospects kind of stink. :-/
