Donte Greene Saves A Life

Good for him, but really, why is she around a river when she can't swim? A friend of mine had a brother who fell into a river, and his dad went in after him, only he couldn't swim either. Both drowned. IMO, if you can't swim, make sure you are in no position to fall into a river.

This is probably a stupid question but what exactly is it that prevents someone from being able to swim or stay afloat if they fall in? I mean I've heard of people that "never learned to swim" but what are they doing wrong if they fall in?

They are probably panicking and thrashing around (making them sink) instead of trying to float or swim

My experience has been that most people who can't' swim, can't float either - plus resulting panic. I was just a tot when my mom gently held me in the water (lakes, pools, etc) to make me comfortable and acclimate to the water. Then, I took swim lessons at very early age which taught me to first learn to float and then some basics of swimming. I just kept it up year after year, but was always aware of limits. Realizing if the water was too cold, too swift, etc - going with a life vest when necessary.

When I was a kid I just got in the pool and started to swim across it. I never really got that people have to learn it. It always just seemed like something that should come natural like walking. I understand that is not the case but I never understood "don't know how to swim".

I like Donte alot... Despite his rookie struggles I think he has a place in this league and I hope we don't make the mistake of letting him go or trading him for little value. At least he brings alot of energy and enthusiasm on the bench whether he plays or not and thats more than I can say about alot of players in this league.

I heard Grant interviewing Donte as well. It was interesting to hear how he decided he needed to learn how to swim and then went on to get certified as a lifeguard. He did some life guard work in HS, I think he said.

Donte was quite modest, but Grant heard about it from a friend who has been a boater and around the water his whole life. Donte and the girl actually were picked up from the water by Grant's friend as they had drifted with the current. Grant's friend said it was the most amazing thing he's ever seen in all his years on the water. The girl was essentially in shock and freezing cold.

They were on the river and the girl was standing at the back of the boat. An experienced driver at the helm gunned the engine causing her to fall off the back. Donte said he really didn't think about it, he just saw she was struggling and jumped in.

Foe those outside the Sacramento region, the rivers here can look placid, but the current is actually very powerful, especially this time of year. The water can be extremely cold, too. Even swimmers can panic, if they get caught in the current. Unfortunately, quite a few people drown in our rivers every year. Non-swimmers can also be wading and suddenly find themselves over their head.

Anyway, Donte was quite modest, but he's clearly a hero in this situation. He really was risking his own life to help save someone who most likely would otherwise have drowned. We should be proud of of our young King.

Good for her, but why publicity he should keep it down if he really meant to save her.

All donte did was tweet about it; I can imagine the adrenaline rush alone was so intense he had to share with someone. He saved a life. That's pretty freaking special.

If he really meant to save her? What are you trying to imply?

He saved a life; and in doing so, he may have brought about a discussion among people that might end up saving more lives.

I'm very proud of him. What he did was worth talking about... it's sure a nice change from looking at the police blotter and seeing what professional athlete was the latest to be arrested for doing something incredibly stupid.
