I heard Grant interviewing Donte as well. It was interesting to hear how he decided he needed to learn how to swim and then went on to get certified as a lifeguard. He did some life guard work in HS, I think he said.
Donte was quite modest, but Grant heard about it from a friend who has been a boater and around the water his whole life. Donte and the girl actually were picked up from the water by Grant's friend as they had drifted with the current. Grant's friend said it was the most amazing thing he's ever seen in all his years on the water. The girl was essentially in shock and freezing cold.
They were on the river and the girl was standing at the back of the boat. An experienced driver at the helm gunned the engine causing her to fall off the back. Donte said he really didn't think about it, he just saw she was struggling and jumped in.
Foe those outside the Sacramento region, the rivers here can look placid, but the current is actually very powerful, especially this time of year. The water can be extremely cold, too. Even swimmers can panic, if they get caught in the current. Unfortunately, quite a few people drown in our rivers every year. Non-swimmers can also be wading and suddenly find themselves over their head.
Anyway, Donte was quite modest, but he's clearly a hero in this situation. He really was risking his own life to help save someone who most likely would otherwise have drowned. We should be proud of of our young King.
