I think Donte has more skills than gerald. Gerald depends on his Athletic ability without that he is mediocre. Donte on the other hand that is just one weapon.

Passing ability
quickness
Defense
shooting
Athletic ability

who do you campare him to if he progresses from where he is at now.

Lamar Odom
Rashard Lewis
Al Harrington
Shawn Marion
Carmello Anthony

I remember at the begining of last season when the talk was JT and Hawes and Jerry Reynolds said that he believes Donte will eventually be the better player of the 3 that he has tremendous skills. We are seeing that come into fruition.
Tracy McGrady seems more right to me. A little more athletic ability than 'Shard.

I'm not so sure Donte can't be our future sg. Its still to early to tell, and I always thought he would be a sf, but I think he might be able to be an extremely effective sg.

He's a better ballhandler and passer than I thought he was. At his height, he would be a nightmare matchup for opposing sg's, along with tyreke in the backcourt. I didn't think he was quick enough to guard sg's, but I actually think he his.

This would go along with the idea of Omri being our future sf. Yeah, they would both be wings, but I don't think Omri is the ballhandler Donte is, although I could be wrong about that.

I like the idea of having Tyreke, Donte, and Omri as our future pg, sg,sf. I'm not sold on it in any way, and its too early to tell if that would work. But it is a scenario I've been thinking about lately.
Donte and Omri's ballhandling skills are both too weak too play SG.
And for Tyreke to be as effective as we want him to be we are going to need a good to great ball handler beside him. Cisco comes to mind as a perfect fit beside Evans.

Now I'm notsaying I dont like the idea of having Donte at SG. Imjust saying I dont think it would be good too have him starting there and playing ther all the time.. I think that lineup of Donte Omri and Tyreke can be used effectively at the right time for mismatchs but not all the time.

Donte reminds me of a more athletic better shooting Kirilenko.Maybe last games blocks were a fluke, but if he can keep those blocks up I see alot of similarities to Kirilenko. Hes not a 2 guard. Hes a SF/PF and thats where he will be most effective for us.

I wouldn't get carried away with the more athletic than Kirilenko. Kirilenko is a great athlete and, a great defender, when he puts his mind to it. I'm happy that Greene had a great game. But I wouldn't get carried away just yet. Lets take a look at the all star break and see how he's doing overall.

All he has to do is go out the next game and turn the ball over 5 times and go 2 for 15 from the field and everyone will want to lynch him. He may well be as good as his last game indicated. Or he may have just had one of those games where everything goes in, and everything goes right. I'm hoping for the former, but I reserve judgement for a while.

As far as what position he should play. I think he's a SF that can play fairly well at PF in the right matchup. I think if you play him at SG, you play away from his stengths by having him chase quick SG's all over the floor. On the other hand, I think he can give SF's fits because of his length without giving up too much on the quickness end.:)

Ignoring the rest of your post (for brevity reasons), would you also say that Kevin's ballhandling skills are too weak to play SG? I think that as long as the SG can drive without losing his handle, it's pretty much all good.

On most teams, I'd tend to agree. On our team, not so much.

Kevins arent that bad, he can slash alot better then both donte and omri. but I think beside tyreke we should have another great ballhandler most of the time .. it takes alot of pressure off of reke to not always have the ball in his hands.
Donte is 6'11 hes going to have alot of trouble against SG's that are smaller and quicker. the reason he was so effective at SG last game is because they had a SG half the size of donte guarding him.

I think a good SG to put beside Reke is Cisco because of his ball handling, playmaking and defense.

ok ok i dont know for sure about more athletic then kirilenko but definitely similar as a player. I also like the Josh Smith with better shooting comparison.
And yah i agree hes more of a SF/PF then a SG/SF/PF.. Hes just too big for SG, smaller guards will abuse him.

I could not be more happy then I am right now. Prior to the start of the season, there were a few of us that were saying Donte should be getting big minutes on this team NO MATTER what. Not because we were so positive he was going to be some stud, but because we just wanted to see what he could or couldnt do.

Well in his short stints this season, I think most of us are more than intrigued with Donte.

I am with the other poster that called for Donte to start right now, no matter what... and here is why.

I am also a huge Cowboys fan. When Miles Austin went off for 250 and 2 tds, the Cowboys coaches just decided that, no matter what, this guy deserved a chance to start. You dont get 250 and 2 tds by luck, and he showed he should get a chance to start.... well 5 games later and he has shown it was not by accident he put up those numbers.

We Donte is ACTIVE and full of energy. He is hitting the boards, blocking shots, and hitting shots. He deserves big minutes now. Once again, this is a team that isnt going anywhere this year. I am hoping for 30 wins. More importantly, I am looking at :

JT, Hawes, Donte, Omri, and Tyreke as young players that have major upside. Hawes is struggling right now, but this team is young and looks like they MIGHT have the pieces in place for a bright future.

I would like to see Donte at the 3. Why cant Martin play the 2, with Reke the 1, Donte the 3, JT at 4, and Hawes at 5??

This gives you Beno, Noc, Omri, and Garcia off the bench. Am I forgetting someone?? Garcia could get minutes at the 2 and 3, and Omri at the 3-4, and Noc at the 3. Oh yeah, Brockman can get minutes at the 5, he is also active.

I remember some coach commenting about how you can never have too many good players. No need to trade Noc, and I personally dont want Garcia taking any minutes from Greene.

Does Garcia have All Star potential? I dont want to get carried away with Greene, but dont we know exactly what we get with Garcia at this point in his Career?

Greene better not lose any minutes, no matter who returns from injury.

BUCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I expect Dontanian to be very inconsistent for a while, but we have nothing to lose, so I'd like to see him get big minutes, 20+ a game. I think Nocioni should still be the starter, though. I don't think that Donte feels like he's earned the right to start yet, over a guy who's been playing decent pro ball for a long time, and who may be a bit of a team leader. Letting him do it might hurt Noc's trade value, too, or at very least his morale. No point in pushing it, until Buckets himself feels like he's earned it. Just give him the minutes. :D

Don't get me wrong on this, I find the thought of trotting out a starting back court composed of two oversized monsters very tantalizing (one of whom would be something like the Magic Johnson of 2 guards, size wise), but I don't think it works in reality. For it to be plausible, Donte has to have the quickness to stay in front of opposing shooting guards, and I find that hard to believe in a guy who's 6'11 (and actually looks the part this year, I wonder if he grew an inch or two). If we had a major shot blocker down low, we might be able to get away with it, but we don't. Actually, Donte might even be our best shot blocker. But hell, I say we do it four times a year (against the warriors) just to spite Don Nelson.

Also, if Donte 'breaks out', I would have to change my tune on the ex-rumored Okafor deal (and concede to Brick's point that young mediocre teams can just get better as they develop).
