Sterling's an idiot. Do the right thing, Adam Silver, and ban the dude for life...

NOTE: I've moved this discussion out of the game/series thread and into its own thread. Just keep it civil. Thanks - VF21

Terrible time for this to come out. Especially when you have legends and essentially NBA spokespeople like Magic Johnson saying he will never again attend a Clippers game with Sterling as owner.

We will see what Silver says tonight but the players are going to have a tough time keeping their focus the longer this plays out.

Silver will have statement 8:30 ET tonight (live on NBA-TV) in which he should at minimum suspend Sterling plus place him on some form of probation. Apparently, Clips owner has previous problem with racist behavior resulting in legal case he settled a few years ago. Now with these inexcusable racist remarks the league needs to sanction old man strongly and without delay.

So am I correct that Sterling's "Girlfriend" recorded this while he thought he was having a private phone conversation with her? Sterling does appear to be a dirtbag and have very poor judgement in who he chooses as a girlfriend.

That said the girlfriend comes off as an equal dirtbag in all this. She recorded Sterling without his knowledge then leaked this to the "Press"???

Did she? I couldn't find how TMZ got this.

Or maybe just maybe she became sick and tired of his racism, especially since she is mixed race.

The true dirtbag here IMHO is Donald Sterling. This ain't his first rodeo, either. His poor judgment goes far beyond who he chose for his mistress (he's married).

From www.news10.net:

The NBA is investigating whether racially insensitive comments in an audio recording obtained by TMZ were made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

"The remarks heard on the recording are disturbing and offensive, but at this time we have no further information," NBA executive vice president of communication Mike Bass said. He also said the league is conducting a "full investigation."

The players union is also looking into the situation, according to president Chris Paul, who is also the Clippers point guard.

"On behalf of the National Basketball Players Association, this is a very serious issue which we will address aggressively," Paul said in a statement. "We have asked Mayor Kevin Johnson to expand his responsibilities with the NBPA, to determine our response and our next steps. As players, we owe it to our teams and our fans to keep our focus on our game, the playoffs, and the drive to the Finals."

Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson, who is helping the union find its next executive director, called for an investigation and possible punishment.

"The reported comments made by Clippers owner Donald Sterling are reprehensible and unacceptable," Johnson said in a statement. "The National Basketball Players Association must and will play a very active role in determining how this issue is addressed. There needs to be an immediate investigation and if the reports are true, there needs to be strong and swift action taken. I have spoken with NBPA President Chris Paul and will be leading the NBPA in addressing the implications of this serious matter. I will be formally reaching out to the NBA today to determine our next steps. While I originally came on to lead the Executive Director search, this issue requires immediate attention from the players association. I will be keeping Chris Paul, the Executive Committee, and all player representatives informed of every step."
Looks like one more task for Kevin Johnson to handle.

So now you suspend him, fine him, and he learns to keep bigoted comments to himself and nothing has changed except the perception. Welcome to the plantation, Clippers.

I have to thank my parents for instilling in me something different. The value of a man is not measured by the size of his billfold but what's in his heart. Sterling's girl friend sounds more intelligent than he is.

I am curious but does anyone think that Sterling understands that his girl friend is half African American? I wasn't sure as he seemed confused when she made comments that assumed that he should have known.

To be honest he sounded high/drunk the entire conversation to me. Then again I've never heard him speak before so maybe that's just his normal voice.

Investigation is ongoing. Sterling is entitled to due process. Authenticity of the tape is paramount.
Donald Sterling will NOT attend the playoff game tomorrow.
Chris Paul (NBPA president) and Adam Silver talked. The Clippers players will not boycott the game.
Silver says they hope to have the whole situation resolved within a few days.
Media asked about comparison to Marge Shott. Silver said he could not really comment in that regard as he remembered the Shott incident as a fan and not as a member of the MLB.

Good summary. Only thing I'd add in the short presser is Silver mentioned "Mayor Kevin Johnson" at least three, four times. The commish was pointing to KJ as liaison between players union in the Sterling matter and NBA. Basically said that Chris Paul as head of the union was turning it over to Mayor Johnson to represent him in any discussions as CP3 would be busy at work in the playoffs.

Somewhat tangentially I must say that KJ seems to be moving up in the world. He's head of the nation's mayors and now part of this. I almost would be willing to bet he would give all this up and have been inducted in the Hall of Fame. :)

Yup apparently KJ has been assisting the players union in their search for the next executive director.

Normal scumbaggery out of Sterling.

The difficulty here is that its a taped private conversation. Be a lot easier to kick his ass out if he had made them as a public statement. Not sure what their rights are to sanction a private statement.

My question is how did TMZ get it? The details will be interesting.

Couldn't it fall into the "morals clause" or something?

It's not outside the realm of possibility that Sterling could all of a sudden agree to sell the team ... to Chris Hansen. Tidy up all kinds of loose ends. ;)

If it is proven who the voices are, it is all public knowledge and whether or not it was a legally obtained tape does not erase the fact that Sterling is a racist SOB and it is known by all. If he gets punished bad and it turns out his gf gave the tape to TMZ, he could sue her I suppose. Not sure how much money she has. He better start looking for buyers ASAP and I doubt if the NBA would be thrilled if he sold the team to someone who would take the team out of LA. That just seems kind of nasty to the long suffering Clippers' fans. Although owners like to say the teams are their property and they should be able to sell to whoever they wish, I doubt if the owners will back Sterling on that issue.

TDOS promises to be a little more exciting this year. ;)

I dunno... I'd feel bad for the Clippers fans.

Who are we kidding? The Clippers "fanbase" will just go back to being Lakers fans once Kobe comes back anyways.

More importantly, KJ seems to be getting close to CP3. Maybe he could make a suggestion or two to Paul about his next destination if Sterling somehow remains in charge of the Clips. Hint hint. Nudge Nudge

If they force Sterling to sell the team, it would be funny if Hansen bought the team to move it to Seattle. Probably not gonna happen though...

Meh. The Clippers may be a team that is out of just about anyone except Larry Ellison's budget and that sure as hell isn't happening.
