Do no rumors mean Kings are standing pat?

Not a peep from any source since Bonzi about anything involving the Kings. No FA tidbits from back east, no trade rumors involving Kings, nothing, nada. That is our Geoff Petrie. The silent type then Bang! But even before previous bangs there were rumors or tidbits in other news outlets. Not this year.

Maybe the main 10 or 11 we have now are the inventory we are going with plus a filler or two on the bench or on an NBADL team.

The Big's out there are going quickly, Hunter apparently out, Reggie Evans now being pursued by new Knick coach Larry Brown who is also looking at Dale Evans and Eldon Campbell. Maybe........ well, uhh, hmmm....... TIDMN! Aren't we looking at anyone? It would seem the other media outlets would get wind but no, nothing. aarrrrggggghhhhhh.......

It is frustrating to be fans of a team that has a great GM who keeps his cards close to the vest. But since he's a former player and realizes the impact trade rumours can have on players I think he particularly sensitive about that. Plus, really, it's good business to do so. I'm sick of the same rumors over and over with different teams interested in the same dwindiling stockpile of leftovers (the main course is consumed). But I really think that GP is in reaction mode at this time until Tuesday when trades begin in ernest. This will be our most critical part of the off season IMHO.

Jason Hart wsan't exactly ground breaking news...even after it happened I didn't see it on realgm or yahoo sports, only found out from kingsfans. But in this situation I think the Kings main targets and plans for the offseason fell through, so they're probably looking to put together another trade. Seeing as none of the Webber trade pieces got traded, I assume we're looking to make another deal.

It's quite possible Petrie is going to bet on a decent PF/C becoming available closer to pre-season.

There will be teams that will be dumping players to avoid luxury tax implications. Chances are, many of these players will be available cheaply to hungry franchises...

It was on the bottom part of an article about Songaila wanting to stay in Sacramento, and it didn't even mention it unless you clicked on the second link with the longer story. At least that's what it was when I checked.

Standing pat? Petrie made it clear already they aren't since the playoffs ended. People must stop thinking that we are going to have Thomas as our starting PF (because that is the main thing right now, the PF spot). The most important move will be done by September.

expect a trade... unlike FA signings and S&T, most big trades don't get leaked out early (or before the moratorium ends), because if the trade doesn't go through, then the players mentioned will be unhappy campers for their current team... as in years past, petrie is more adept at getting players through trade than enticing them as a FA... so i would expect a trade to be made in the near future....

also, i think the maloofs would rather swap salaries in a trade, instead of adding on a new $5 mil salaray via MLE

This is the thing I don't really agree with...

People are assuming teams will dump players simply to avoid the luxury tax. While that part might be true, I find it very difficult to believe that teams will dump GOOD players to avoid the tax because they will still have to pay their salary.

Waiving a player means that money isn't available for anything else. If Fred Smith is making $16 mil this year and $18 mil next year for example, that's a huge hit. Now if good ol' Fred just can't play worth beans any longer then you buy out his contract. You don't waive him just to avoid the luxury tax hit because you'd still be stuck for the $28 mil.

I think very few teams are actually going to "take advantage" of the one-time waiver. There simply aren't that many players out there like Houston IMHO.

As far as "many of these players will be available cheaply" goes, I think you get what you pay for.

Of course, I could end up being totally off-base. The way maximum contracts, etc. are looking this year so far, nothing would really surprise me.

Well I found out about it on NBA.com so...

It takes two to Tango. And no matter how much some of use would like to see an upgrade, it’s very possible he can't be moved, or the cost of moving him being too much to bother with.

Thanks Brick.

It's also very possible Skinner could become the starting four. :)

I highly doubt we don't have a new starting PF.

"Some of us". I'd hope it's all of us Kings fans, because anyone who wants Thomas as our starting four isn't thinking long-term, and being quite ignorant.

While I agree that there may not be as many teams taking advantage of this offer as many may think, there WILL be players made available through this one-time event.

The question is, which teams take advantage of them?

I just threw this out as a possibility for the silence. I'm not totally convinced anything will happen before the FA signings deadline or the one-time, contract waiver. Simply exploring the possibilities, that's all...

Silence doesn't mean Petrie is standing pat. In fact, you can make a case that all the teams that are making all the noise at hoopshype.com or realgm.com (wanting every player on the market) are absolute disgrace. Look at Dan Gilbert of the Cleveland Cavaliers...look at Isaiah Thomas of the New York Knicks...all that noise gets you nowhere...just a lot of players (like Kurt Thomas and Penny Hardaway) with hurt feelings.

No one saw the Jason Williams-Mike Bibby swap coming...

No one saw the Brad Miller 3-team trade coming...

No one saw the Jason Hart acquisition coming...

But Petrie still gets the job done. Just speak softly and carry a big stick...

No one saw Webber trade coming

No one saw Christie trade coming

No one even thought about Jim Jackson the year we got him

Mo Evans was nothing until he came to the kings now he is saught after by a few teams

Songalia was unwanted by Boston now he is trying to get 5 mil or more a year.

No matter what the trade or who we pick up I am sure they will be just fine no matter how we feel initially.

Songaila won't get us much in a S&T, nor will Evans, and both will likely walk. Martin is young and wouldn't get us much, besides there is no good reason to trade away potential. Corliss is an old dog, Skinner and Thomas don't have much upside, the Webber trade will not be recreated. We could get a decent PF by packaging a lot of them, but increasingly I am beginning to think that we may have to work with K9 because the alternatives aren't looking much better. If we build a good tough bench around the guys we have, a bench with rebounding and defense, we may be able to adapt and create a good team anyway. Our other 4 starters are absolutely solid anyway, but not elite. Absent grabbing a Nowitski/Garnett/Duncan, a PF will not elevate us to contender status, but a great bench and good team chemistry could, in theory.

I meant in multi-player trades... not by themselves. We couldn't get much at all for someone by themself mentioned above, unless it's Songaila probably, who has shown high interest from Seattle/Wizards, with no mention of any other players there. Martin could be used as that extra piece a team might want, he's not untradeable. I utlimately think he stays, but throw him in there because of the former.

I still think it's way too early in the off-season to write off not getting a PF to replace Thomas. I agree about the bench though.
