Way to make it in the pic, uncommonclay!

Comments on the game:

Very disappointing. We only had one good quarter, two okay quarters, and then one really fell apart quarter. In that 4th qtr, I was disappointed in both the offense and the defense.

Aqua may be a fireplug, but if she doesn't get a better handle on the ball, she cannot be a really good point guard. That game was a perfect example of why we still need Ticha. We need our floor general to set people up. Aqua does entirely too much dribbling. We just kept watching her dribble time off the clock and then someone had to take a lousy forced shot. I believe that was the biggest reason our offense failed, besides the fact that Detroit really upped their defensive intensity.

I hate it when we play teams with a couple of 3 pt shooters....which seems to be a lot. Our defense cannot stop the perimeter shooters. Every time Smith and Nolan drained wide open threes, I just put my head in my hands and cringed.

We started out the game with energy and a lot of movement. By the 4th quarter there was little movement off the ball. We cannot win that way.

Yeah, after seeing the Smith and Nolan shootout yesterday, I'd say I'm over the white-line defense. It was great when it was first used, but now everyone knows we play it and everyone knows how to beat it. Even if we just play something different for a couple minutes a game I'd be happy, but seeing Smith and Nolan spot up seemingly everytime down the court made me sick.

They were a different team in the 2nd half. While it was a concerning that Tweety and Smith were going off, what was more concerning was the Ms could not muster any offense themselves in that second half to counter that and they stopped hitting the boards. How many of those points that those two scored were set up by at least one offensive board? There were possession where the M's gave up more than 1 o-board. That's has nothing to do with exploitation of the white line defense or its derivatives. It has to do with not getting the job done.

Smith was lighting them up in the first half, yet they still had a lead going into halftime. That they stopped being being able to dictate tempo (namely because they stopped hitting the boards and playing much defense) was huge. That to me was the biggest difference. And I think coach let her displeasure be known when she yanked her starters out and cleared her bench early in the third quarter.

I don't care how good your defense is, you aren't going to beat anybody scoring 10 pts in a quarter. And well, if you're going to score less in the entire second half than you did in the 2nd quarter? You may not beat your B team doing that.

Agreed, MBF. I will note, however, that while Smith scored 15 pts in the 1st quarter, she only scored 3 pts in the 2nd qtr.

I guess that was my point...they were theoretically playing white line all game and for the most part it didn't really matter what Nolan and Smith did because the Ms were scoring and that game within reach. If the defense forces a team to shoot 50+% from the perimeter, you tip the cap that they shot that well from there. As a team, the Shock had been shooting under 28% from there on the season. Nights like that happen. But you can do a better job to not give a team extra shots and that's not white line either.

When a team is giving up as many or points to two players than that team is scoring in the quarter. That's not white line exploitation, that's crappy offense and the offense got crappy because they stopped rebounding well and stopped running. They stopped doing a lot of things, but that's what struck me.
