"Let Slim address it from here"? I don't know if you guys have ever seen him give a ruling before, but when he says it, thats it.

If you're wanting to get an eloquent response on just why it is not allowed, you're not thinking of the Slim I know.

He's said its no good, and from personal experience, there's really no point arguing. Even if you think he's wrong.

+1. You're talking about the 20th pick. I don't think it's really worth getting all bothered.

To leave the controversy behind for a while, back to the drafting. My last pick was an intentionally easy one to make, as I set up my list with a sold 20th spot to make sure that I'd end things without stress. There's a ton left on my list that I'd at least like to mention, however, so I'll be joining the group in posting my next 20(ish) unpicked alternates when this thing wraps up.

Until then, my 20th pick:

Royal Crown Revue -- Mugzy's Move (1995)
-- In the mid-90s, largely thanks to the movie Swingers, there was a rather successful revival of all things swing. For the record, I hated it. All the things that made me stand out as quirky suddenly made me blend in as trendy. Not to mention the utter craptasticness of roughly 99% of the swing bands that popped up during that time. Sure, it became easier for me to find that super cute pair of two-tone spectator wing tip inspired chunky heels, and there were plenty of people who were introduced to a subculture of which they probably weren't previously aware, but... too many poseurs for this life long purist. Much of the music sucked, wallet chains became so plentiful that dancing in those chunky heels became dangerous, thrift stores were ruined forever (curse you, "vintage boutiques"!), and all the best clubs and concerts became way too crowded. HOWEVER, despite all of my ranting and raving, there was a bit of good that came out of this revival, and Royal Crown Revue was one of those things. Like many of the new swing bands, Royal Crown Revue started as a band with roots in punk, rockabilly, and jazz. Unlike many of the less successful new swing bands, however, their music felt less like a band molding themselves to match a trend. It's completely removed from the real 30s/40s swing in style and sound, but still maintains a certain authenticity to the "movement." It's fun, too, which is important, and nearly impossible to listen to without tappin' your toes at least a little bit.

Last pick for me:

Madonna - Music (2000)

Are there better Madonna albums? Sure...but this one has some meaning. My wife got tickets for this tour with a bunch of female friends and I tagged along. I had always been somewhat of a Madonna fan and I had heard that she puts on some pretty amazing shows. The show was at Staples Center in LA (we lived in Santa Monica at the time) on September 13th, 2001...two days after September 11th. There was talk that the show would be cancelled, and rightfully so. There was a part of me that didn't want to go because of the events of a couple days prior. Madonna wanted it to go forward, so we went. I've never been to a concert with such nervous tension before the show. People were clearly not comfortable congregating in large venues like that. Even after the show started, it took a great deal of time for people to get into it. Madonna had an extended moment of silence, and although those are rarely silent, EVERYONE was silent this time. She gave a quick little statement about how she really wanted everyone to show the world that we were not afraid and that we were going to keep living our lives. She put on an awesome show...I can't really call it a concert...it's definitely a SHOW. By the time she ended with an encore of "Holiday," the crowd was pumped...and even if for a short time, we were able to set aside our very recent memories of September 11th and have some fun...it meant a lot that night.

You appear to be trying to provoke me. Is that your objective?

Whatever. With my twentieth pick, I select:

Jill Scott - Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 - 2000

3x Grammy nominated, Double-platinum debut album of Jill Scott. The highest-charting single was "A Long Walk," which hit #43 on the Billboard Top 200, and #9 on the Top R&B.

First, let me offer as a friendly suggestion to anyone thinking about proctoring a draft in the future: if you plan to include any linkage in your draft board (like with the Hot Babe draft), or really any formatting more sophisticated than bolding the draft picks, save yourself some time and set aside 3-4 posts for your draft board.

Now, to address some of this unpleasantness...

... If for some reason Slim disagrees, would I be allowed to take one of the discs, even though they are not available separately? It would then become a live disc that meets the strict interpretation of the rule, which is not even in the original post under the rules section.
It may not be in the OP, but it was a rule that was decided upon, and all participants made aware of, more than a week before the draft officially started. As far as I'm concerned, everybody received ample advanced notice of the rule. Furthermore, this rule has been appealed and upheld before already in this draft. It's not like you didn't know about it, or like I snuck up on you at the last second and threw that rule in there.

If for some reason the pick is ineligible, just forfeit my 20th pick.
You have until Kingzrool makes his pick to change your mind.

I hate to say it but there are a few live albums from multiple shows that went unnoticed when they were drafted. I now feel terrible about not being a narc since apparently this pick means a lot to C Diddy.
First of all, I am totally the wrong person to try to appeal to with the "Well, he got away with it!" defense. If somebody else got away with selecting a "live" album that was recorded over multiple sessions, it wasn't because I looked the other way. In fact, I'm certain that I personally researched every album with the word "Live" in the title, and found them to be in compliance with the rule. Far more likely was, if it didn't say "Live," I probably didn't realize that it was supposed to be "live."

Second of all, with regards to why didn't I catch any that got past, the answer is surprisingly simple: I didn't think I'd have to look for any. See, the rules were fairly clearly spelled out before the draft officially started; in fact, if you look back on the early part of the draft, you will see that I actually overruled a decision of mine over something that wasn't clearly stated before the start of the draft. I would think that you would remember, since you're the one who asked me the question. So, having already established the rules, trusting soul that I am, it didn't occur to me that I would have to babysit fifteen adults through three hundred picks to make sure that they complied. For the most part, unless people directly requested a ruling from me, the only picks I researched were in the case of those where the drafter neglected to provide the year the album was released, and I had to look it up myself. I think I established pretty early in this draft that I'm not familiar with most of the picks that are being made, so I guess I expected that people would have the integrity to follow the rules on their own without trying to see if they could get one over on me. If what you are alleging is true, then it is clear that my trust was misplaced.

All this brouhaha troubles me: in my opinion, the time to get a rule changed is before the start of the game, not in the middle, and certainly not in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. And, frankly, I find myself struggling to muster any sympathy: I have infinitely more respect for someone who declines to participate, or actually withdraws from participation rather than be obligated to play by rules that they think are unfair, than I do for someone whom agrees to play by the rules, and then complains about having to play by the rules.

Slim, I wasn't suggesting that because one person got away with it another should, I just felt I needed to point that out because up until now it seemed like that rule wasn't being enforced (on the other hand I know that myself and others who did know better had to leave some of our favorites off the board). And I honestly believe that the people who picked live albums recorded on separate dates did not know any different. Although the first time it happened I PM'd the person just to let him know. I saw it happen once or twice more and decided just to let it go. Again I figured honest mistakes, especially since the titles of the album suggest that they were recorded on one night. Maybe that was wrong of me, so I apologize.

Well, now you know that I didn't, either. Anything that said "live" in the title, I did the legwork myself, and found at least once acceptable source that said it was recorded in one night. Anything that didn't, I took the drafter's word for it... more the fool me, I guess.

Glad to see some real discussion and explanation on this. I think maybe for fairness, since pdx has the info, the drafters with these illegal live albums should be notified and allowed to replace them up until Kingzrool's pick that effectively ends the draft.

And Slim, no I wasn't trying to provoke you Just pointing out a fact. Every illegal pick in the past you have just basically said it wasn't allowed and that was that. Its an authoritarian strategy, and I'll admit it, its worked rather well up until now. Again, i'm glad to see a little bit more discussion on this one though as it is the most confusiing of them all so far.

pdx had PM'ed me regarding the queen - live at wembley pick. allmusic had shown it as two recordings i think, but when i picked i did so via wikipedia and didn't realize. anyway, i thought that's why it has the little *.

do i need to re-pick?

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
alright, no holding up the queue this late in the game:

Three Days Grace -- One X (2006)

With monster albums still littered around untaken left and right you would think I might be tempted, but nah. I'm going with the sophomore effort of post grunge alt metal act Three Days Grace, who have had me firmly in their pocket ever since I heard I Hate Everything About You (Why Do I Love You) off of their first album. I grew up a classic rock/old metal guy, but one glance at my board will find precious little of it. I just sort of outgrew it for the most part. The classic songs got tired sounding, the metal wasn't expressive of who I was after making it past those shaky teen years etc. But that doesn't mean that I still don't love to listen to something fresh that rocks hard, and Three Days Grace is currently dominating the rock/metal rotation on my ipod. I don't know that they do anything genre bendingly different with their alt/pop metal, they just do it better, and catchier, than any band I have heard in quite some time. Two platinum albums in, and they already have half a dozen really strong singles, and great great depth on both the albums -- on One X there might not be a single weak track, and even after you get by the three #1 hit singles (Never Too Late, Animal I Have Become (my personal fave), and Pain) you run into strong rocker after strong rocker on this album, making it one of the few albums of the digital music age that I immediately bought in full album format, rather than piecemeal. Who knows about grabbing votes, but this rounds out my island nicely, and closes it with a straight ahead fun rock album the same way I opened it (with AC/DCs Back in Black).

No, that would be mine. ;)

Few enough people were playing this thing to actually win the voting, and we've got a number of specialist islands with limited voting appeal, obscure picks, and other anomalies that you would not have if people had treated this as a best of draft or get votes draft rather than a personal faves draft.

And now with my last heroic pick:

Off the Deep End - Weird Al (1992)

I'm pretty sure this doesn't violate any of the board rules.

After 1989's UHF, Yankovic returned to the studio to record his new album. On June 6, recording officially began, with Airline Amy. After the four originals ("Trigger Happy", "When I Was Your Age", "You Don't Love Me Anymore", and "Waffle King"[1]) were done Yankovic switched to the parody. At the time, only three parodies had been envisioned ("The White Stuff", "I Can't Watch This", and "The Plumbing Song"[1]). After waiting for about a year for the "next big thing" to come out, Yankovic went on a slight hiatus in order to find the right lead-off parody/single. By late 1991, Nirvana's Nevermind was making waves in the rock and pop scene. As the popularity of 80's pop gave way to alternative rock, Yankovic decided it was time to record a parody of the Seattle-based band's huge hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Off the Deep End was released April 1992, and up to that point, was Yankovic's best selling album.

And now I have "Taco Grande" stuck in my head.

Yes, I played this just as an excuse to talk about music I liked and maybe inspire a few people to try something new (maybe I did?). I also enjoyed finding out that there are a handful of people I had some musical tastes in common with that I wouldn't have necessarily known about.

I know I plan on voting for the people who did the same. I like hearing about people's personal connections to music, their favorites songs and what they love about them as opposed to how many grammys or video awards an album won.

Last Pick

Well it is that time. The final pick of the Music Draft Thread is.............

Drum roll please................

Not much of a surprise actually

New Order - 1981 - Factus 8 - 1982 - 1982

This is an EP and as some of you know, it has already been approved by commish. All tracks were only previously released as singles. And as previously mentioned, New Order pretty much pioneered house/techno music which undeniably has permeated all styles of current music more than any other music genre. This may sound less important than it is. This band has influenced or set the track for 80% of the bands that have put out a record in the last decade and a half. Does that incompass it? They are the Beatles of Electronica/dance.

I am going to need to dance, so I went to the source. Good thing noone can laugh at my dancing on the island eh. I would mention my fav track, but at this point, I am going to play my singles close to the chest.

"Everything's Gone Green"
"Procession"
"Mesh"
"Temtation"
"Hurt"

Bozwell, do you have this one?

And with that our music draft is over after 59 days, 12 hours, and 42 minutes. That's average of 4 hours, 27 minutes and 45 seconds between picks. Pretty good.

To bring things back, have you tried playing Dark Side of the Moon yet to the Wizard of Oz? I've done it twice now. Let me tell you.....its ridiculous.
