Hey man, don't hate... they just missed the cut on my list.

In fact, I think that, after everybody picks, I'm going to post a list of my next twenty albums that just missed the cut.

I had already promised a scan of my handwritten original list after the last round, I was also probably going to name a few contraband selections that I would have taken were they legal.

Truth told, I could probably draft 100 albums, staying in the rules as defined and still feel like I shortchanged something.

Gee, I wonder why Slim was so familiar with New Order discography? I had him researching for my last pick already because of the same type of considerations. I bet he was surprised when your request was the same band as I had just requested. I am going out on a limb assuming noone else is going there for their last pick. Mine is more obscure anyhow. If you ask VF21, she will attest that "Power Corruption and Lies" was my first alternate. Since then, I have set up my record player and been listening to all my New Order, and luckily readjusted my selection and order. I have a nice selection of their rare singles and EP's and saw them a couple of times.
Nice. :)

Slim is a perfect commish. He didn't let me slide "Substance" in as an album, but he did advise me that Blue Monday was on PC&L in US, which is just perfect for my draft. I get an NE album and Blue Monday is on it. Only Slim would go out of his way to prove the point twice (no compilations, and name album with requested single) on the same ruling. Which is fine by me.

Hey Slim, thanks for the effort and as I made my last pick, looking back, this was an awesome game and thanks for starting the ball rolling and organizing everything. TDOS this year is bearable in great part thanks to you.

I am down. Actually, I might as well announce now that once I have picked my (the) last pick, I am going to start an IPOD music draft thread, in which we select a playlist of 25 singles. Hold tight for this, coming up......

Alright, I contemplated on whether I should take this or not....but since I am going to be stranded on an island forever, with nothing but beaches everywhere I look, I might as well bring along the Beach Boy himself.

Brian Wilson - SMiLE - 2004

The album that was delayed for 37 years was well worth the wait. Well, I was only alive for 14 of those years...and none of them I was consciously waiting for this album during....sooo

Anyway, SMiLE was suppose to be The Beach Boy's answer to my first pick, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but due to Brian Wilson's increasing mental problems, disruptions between the band, and other catastrophes, it fell apart. The most notable catastrophe being Brian Wilson hearing "Strawberry Fields Forever" while driving down a highway and having to pull over because of the effect it put on him. He later noted about the song's sound: "The Beatles got there first."

This is one of the best reviewed albums of all time, and the best reviewed album of at least the past decade as it is solely at the #1 spot on Metacritic.com. Every track on it is a classic, or would have been had it been released when it was suppose to. I take it with my last pick, gladly.

Good pick, I'm glad someone picked it since I am about to pick what would appear to be a totally random Beach Boys album, that isn't generally considered very good, for vastly personal reasons, which I will explain in my write up... coming shortly!

So with my final pick, I will pick the album that started me on my musical journey:
The Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coupe (1963)

I think I said way back when Pet Sounds was taken that I had a Beach Boys pick of my own and that it would be safe at 20. That's because this is probably their weakest album before Brian broke down. But that's not why its on my list.

When I was a kid we spent most of our summers in Tahoe and one particular weekend my dad picked up some 8-tracks at the Lucky's supermarket. Up until then we pretty much listened to Sesame Street singalongs in the car, so my younger brother and I weren't exactly thrilled when my dad decided to put "his" music on. Until we heard it - catchy singalong tunes about cars. Wow. A whole new world opened up to us and we threw ourselves into it all the way. Buying all their albums, renting videos, documentaries, whatever. We wanted to know everything about our new heroes, and everyone they played with along the way. On any random day back in Sacramento you could probably find us on our front porch giving concerts for any passerby. Of course our guitars were tennis rackets that we were strumming to our cassette tapes, but we didn't care. We wanted to learn guitar, our mom insisted we learn piano. Nevertheless this was the beginning of my musical journey and no island would be complete without it.

Now, like I said, this isn't their best album by any stretch. It was released in a hurry and partially in reaction to Capitol Records releasing a hot-rod themed compilation album featuring two of the cuts that would also be found here ("Shut Down" and "409".) Sill its no throwaway with those two tracks, along with the title cut and "Be True to Your School" standing out. The album also hinted at the depth that would surface on later Beach Boys albums. You can see the shift away from Chuck Berry and more towards a Phil Spector sound start here. Plus all the tunes are about hot rod cars, another something I've always had a passion for (thanks again to my dad who always seemed to have a project or two in the driveway).

This album will always have a special place in my heart and that is why it absolutely had to round out my collection.

Someone's 24 is up.

btw, just wanted to say, this thread really is paying dividends for me. I got Doolittle and haven't stopped listening to it since. I had heard the Pixies were good, but I was impressed even still

I believe that was C Diddy, making it my pick.

Sooner or later being alone is going to drive me crazy, If I am I'm taking some crazy music with me!

With my final pick:

I take They Might Be Giants - Flood

Flood is the third studio album by They Might Be Giants, and their first with a major label, Elektra Records. It was released in 1990. It was recorded in 1989 at Skyline Studios in New York City.
The first single, "Birdhouse In Your Soul," reached number 3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart and was a top 40 hit elsewhere, including Australia. Flood also contains another two of their most well-known songs, "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)", a cover of The Four Lads' song, and "Particle Man," both of which were made into animated music videos on the children's television show Tiny Toon Adventures, exposing the band to a much younger audience.
Being their most popular record and many fans' first exposure to the group, the album has occasionally been performed in its entirety at live shows

I was away most of the weekend. I apologize for not sending my picks to someone. I missed my babe pick too.

Final pick.

Counting Crows - Across A Wire: Live In New York City - 1998

This was Counting Crows' third album release, which was a little unusual considering they had only had two studio albums. Most bands wait a bit before releasing a live album. However, this double album is fantastic. It contains two live performances, one from MTV's live at the 10 spot, and one from VH1's Storytellers. The MTV disc is uptempo, electric, full of energy, and really shows off Crows frontman Adam Duritz ability to freestyle (not in a rap sense) mid song, changing up lyrics and melodies on the fly. If you ever see CC live, Duritz is like the maestro on stage, with several hand and body signals to tell the band exactly what he wants to do. Its incredible to watch it done seemingly flawlessly. The Storytellers performance was very intimate, and Adam Duritz spoke about many of the concepts and personal memories behind the songs. Some of these "stories" made it onto the disc. This performance was also noteworthy in that CC only performed songs they had an arrangement for that was outside the studio releases. Some songs are played Acoustic when they are normally electric, and vice versa. Duritz does his trademark freestyling on this performance also. Absolutely incredible double album all around.

For my final album, I need something calming and relaxing. Something beautiful and foreign.

Enya - Watermark (1988 - but using the 1989 and later release - see below)

I have struggled to find which Enya album to include, as I have favorites spanning all her stuff. I decided to go with Watermark for the strength of the album in general and inclusion of Storms in Africa, Pt. II on the 1989 and later release of the album, a song I really enjoy and probably my favorite of hers.

Just needed something different to fill out the top 20, and this fits the bill for my downtime. And Storms in Africa will be perfect for the tropical downpours. :)

If we're being real strict on rules, shouldn't you have to take the original version of your pick, Warhawk?
Actually, it's the only version I own and the only version you can buy (that I know of, except maybe on ebay somewhere).

Yes, they made a change in the number of tracks, but it is still the same studio album. I was just specifying the one I have. It is not a re-release. Just like certain model year cars may have slightly different components based on the time of year purchased, this album came with one extra song depending on the year purchased.

That is different than a "live" album coming from two different performances, which is expressly prohibited in the rules.

And I personally don't care if he uses it or not (since we are out of choices at this point), I was just making an observation. ;)

If for some reason the pick is ineligible, just forfeit my 20th pick. Both live albums I wanted to take would be considered ineligible. One recorded over a 3-day music festival, I can understand, but if the double live album doesn't count, that's just lame.

I get your frustration, but there are some live albums I would have liked to use had we been able to choose albums from multiple shows. I could have eliminated at least one of my choices that way and still gotten the music I wanted. Heck, one of the live albums I wanted has a very good song I can't take because the group only performed it live. But it is a 2-disk album from multiple shows as well, so I passed on it.

I hate to say it but there are a few live albums from multiple shows that went unnoticed when they were drafted. I now feel terrible about not being a narc since apparently this pick means a lot to C Diddy.

Here's the thing: Many popular live albums are pieced together from an entire tour or longer. They become more like greatest hits albums that way, as the best performances of each song on the tour is often chosen for the album.

That's not the case with the album I chose. If the two performances were on separate discs, there wouldn't be any contention of its validity. It would simply be legal, no questions asked. I fail to see why its release as a double album makes it illegal. If live albums are legal, and double albums are legal, than this album is legal.

If for some reason Slim disagrees, would I be allowed to take one of the discs, even though they are not available separately? It would then become a live disc that meets the strict interpretation of the rule, which is not even in the original post under the rules section.

I hate to be a putz, but I feel the same as Warhawk. I had a live album that I really wanted, it was nixed by commish as well. Save it for GGG's thread.

Most live albums are from one tour. Your double live album actually is two separate performances (with many of the same songs repeated) for two separate "tours" (if you will), one for VH1 and one for MTV.

Look at allmusic's blurb about it:

Certainly, all of the group's hardcore fans will delight in having two complete live shows on one specially priced double-disc set

The first disc consists of their performance for VH1's Storytellers, the second of MTV Live from the 10 Spot.

The end result is two fascinating, entertaining concerts in one package
If it was a double-disk set from one show, nobody bats an eye. But this is one release from two shows. Definitely a no-no in this particular draft.

Like I said, I really don't personally care if you use it or not - it doesn't affect my choices now and I really don't think I will win any votes for my list anyways. :p I am just trying to explain why some of us would have also taken live shows from multiple performances earlier in the draft if we could, and that is what this disk is.

I'll let Slim address it from here, hope I didn't step on his toes at all with my $0.02.

I would definitely be OK with taking one disk, if he so chooses, as they are one live show per disk.
