Me and my goddamned integrity: former Boy Scout + former holder of Top Secret clearance = no Superfly for Mister Slim... :(

:: sighs ::

Okay, last time I bring it up, I promise.

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

A highly acclaimed album, that was praised for both its outstanding music and it's poignant social commentary. Ranked by VH1 as the 31st greatest album of all time, and 23rd greatest by Rolling Stone. It won three Grammys in 1974: Best R&B Song (Living For the City), Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording, and Best Album.

Oh yeah, and it also happens to have one of my Top-5 favorite songs of all time: Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing... Todo 'sta bien, chévere' -- you got that?

didn't think it could get worse for me after the g3 pick, then kingzrool had to really kick me while i'm down. that de la soul album was c-l-a-s-s-i-c!

A Tribe Called Quest -- Midnight Marauders (1993)
-- I have been compiling my list with a focus on diversity and, while I'm not certain this will end up being my only hip hop/rap pick, if I HAD TO survive for several years with only one hip hop CD at my disposal... this would easily be the one. A favorite of mine since the year it was released, this CD, and Tribe in general, always represented to me everything that hip hop could be. Smooth, jazzy, and completely unique. Even 15 years later.

Yikes! I'm back, I'm back! Thanks for the previous two quick picks, though Mr. Slim.

Ahem, while I AM a metalhead, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate all forms of music...it's just that metal is much better. :D

I don't know what I ever did to GoGoGadget for her to hate me so much but geez. In all seriousness, that album is special for a bunch of reasons. Tribe has always been one of my favorite hip hop groups. With tradepeja and dimedropper taking all the hip hop albums, and yourself along with spike and others taking everything else, I may need to rethink my strategy here.

Sorry.

I was surprised it lasted that long, and I wasn't about to ignore it any longer.

I have also come to realise just how complex this could be. For me personally, I have made it a point to always be open to all types of music and have had many influences help me along the way. On any given day, the variety of music that I desire to hear ranges greatly. So to try to pick just 20 that I would want to take with me for the rest of my days (while competing with others to boot for these albums) is more difficult than I had originally thought. My tastes and moods change so frequently and I often find myself caught in cycles where I listen to one particular genre over the other then move on to something else pretty often. No matter what albums I end up with, I still feel like I will be missing alot. I am sure everyone else is going through the same dilemma. Looking over some of the lists so far, this is actually super competitive overall.

I made it so you did not have to look at the picks with the whole link concept. If you did not look, you would not have known and I could not have blamed you. Did you click on all of the links? But I like the VF idea, that should work great in the future.

I'll trade you Superfly for Purple Rain.

BTW, Purple Rain and Paranoid (ouch) are the only picks taken aside from mine that are on my list. (fingers crossed)

one of the greats of the 80's/90's. this album is particularly cool as it was recorded on 12.31.99. wish it had piano man and uptown girl on it, but there are still plenty of good stuff without those two. a lot of the music also reminds me of my dad and of NYC, so some sentimental stuff in there too.

Nice pick, J. I was looking at Billy a bit but missed that one.

I think I'll go with:

Fiona Apple - Tidal

I picked this up as a fluke on a review I read once and after a couple listens I really liked what I heard. Haven't picked up anything else by her yet, but I will soon remedy that.

Sleep to Dream, Shadowboxer, Criminal, and Carrion in particular are my favorites here.

She's got a voice that just reaches in and grabs me for some reason - I put this and Dido on an MP3 CD and just keep rolling with it in the car. :D

I have a feeling G3 will not be happy about this.
I have the feeling that she may like one of her later albums better, but this is the only one I have heard so far so this is the one I know. ;) She's had 5 chances so far - obviously it wasn't THAT important to her list. :p

Oh, PM sent.

Aye. I didn't realize what you were supposed to be doing with that.

Prophetess is on the clock... She only PM'd me her fourth round pick, so unless she uncharacteristically logs on to the site late tonight, this thread's probably going to die down for the evening.

Hey GGG, you're living up to your avatar for once :p

Anyway, theres one artist I'm so frikkin surprised to not see one album picked up from. I hadn't had any of this artists because I thought they'd mostly be picked up by people who liked that style more....but I might pick one up now just for votes.

Well, at least my next two picks are safe from you. Although, those two are probably not even on your list, or this high on anyone else's. This is going to get a lot more fun as we get beyond strategy and into eccentric quirks. At this point, I am sure that I will have several that are not in anybody's collection.

Savage Garden - Savage Garden

Debut album

"I Want You" was released in the United States in February 1997, where it peaked at #4 and quickly achieved gold status. "Truly Madly Deeply", the band's third Australian single, was released in March and reached #1 just before "I Want You" was released across Europe in April. The duo's debut . At the end of August, Savage Garden was nominated for a record 13 ARIA Awards. The 10 ARIAs won by them in September was also a record, and one that still stands today.

I think this was overlooked. I was so sure it had already been picked that I re-read the draft board on the first page twice. With my 5th selection, I select:

Nirvana - In Utero - 1993

Nirvana is one of my all-time favorite bands. In Utero is a great album. In Utero ranks among the best albums in the 90's on several notable lists, including Keerang, Spin, and Rolling Stone. "Heart Shape Box", "All Apologies", and "Rape Me" are the hits off the album, but don't overlook quality tracks like "Dumb", "Very Ape", and "Pennyroyal Tea". This is a well-rounded album, and an excellent follow-up to the smash Nevermind.

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

Rounding out my top 5, and before I begin picking heavily from my favored genre:
Ice Cube - Death Certificate

While this is my "rap" selection, this album has more in common with the punk ethos than many of the punk revival bands that would take off within a few years. It would be impossible to get through 3-4 tracks on this album and not have at least one of your sensibilities offended - a number of tracks are blatantly misogynist, homophobic or racist, and yet through it all there is a larger point to be made which at least for me excuses the vulgar tone. The first half of the album "The Death Side: a mirror image of where we are today" never veers from its course telling the tale and inevitable result of a life of gangs, drugs and whore-mongering. "The Life Side" isn't really any less offensive or bleak, though it does sprinkle in a few upbeat tracks and the suggestion that there is a way out.

And then at the end you get "No Vaseline". If you know it, enuff said.

Lets try a stream of consciousness post:

This is definitely my hardest choice yet. Partially because I was about to take In Utero. And I was still trying to figure out my pick after that, because so much of its left. Including a vvvvery surprising group of albums by a certain artist I recently added because no one has took ANY of them. I am going to eliminate all of those....because I'm just not a true fan of this artist. But, I might have to grab one next pick if they are still left untouched.

I also haven't picked any of my 3rd all-time favorite band's albums yet (after Beatles & Nirvana of course). I think they will last though, so I'll eliminate those. Also there is a realllly classic album I want a lot, but I'm just going to hope it lasts. There's a ton of rap albums I still want too, and I'm having trouble the most here....pick a rap album or not.

I'm gonna go with not, for now. And make this pick. I kinda feel like I'm stealing it from others more worthy though.

Sublime - Sublime - 1996

What GGG said is right. These people are great musicians. I remember hearing my first Sublime song probably when I was 10. I was walking up to my best friend's house and his two older brothers were working on the inside of a car. They were installing in insane stereo system, with a massive amp. I remembering them saying, "We need to test the bass." They popped in this CD and skipped it to track 15 "Carress Me Down." Man....that bass. What occurred next was one of those moments you don't forget for many, many years. God, that car's system was awesome...I wonder what happened to it.

[/really long post]

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run (1975)\

Gotta have some Boss on the island. Just can't do it without some Boss. Bricklayer already snapped up some (Born In The USA), so I'll take what's "left". And what's "left" is in my pesronal opinion is the best Springsteen record. Born in The USA and "one other" Boss record are 2a and 2b for me.

Two sides with 4 songs each, all great songs, nothing not to like or complain about.

From Bozz to Boss: Thank you for the music!

Had both on my list as an either/or option but could not ignore the iconic nature of the Born in the U.S.A. album.

Note: GGG is a communist and thinks that you are a tonedeaf cretin for making this selection. Just passing that on. :D
