Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (1973) (Wiki Link)
Now is as good a time as any to snatch up what I think is the best Led Zeppelin album available. Normally I think you'd expect a bit of a letdown after the masterpiece of their fourth album, but Houses of the Holy kept it right on going. I think my favorite thing about Houses is that there really isn't a single "down" song on the album. I was trying to figure out which songs were the hits to help decide which video to link and I had to come to the conclusion that the hit songs on Houses were "kinda all of them". No filler. And it rocks.
You've heard the entire album on the radio, but here's "Over the Hills and Far Away"

All the albums I've drafted so far, I really, really like. But this might be the first one I've been able to get to my island that I absolutely love.
Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains (1994)
The story behind Jar of Flies is such perfect "mystic rock legend" I almost have trouble believing it as anything more than exceedingly clever marketing. The band came home from a world tour in support of their second album to find themselves evicted having not paid rent while on tour. Naturally, they decided to live in their studio temporarily and over the course of a week long jam session produced this "hauntingly gorgeous" and, at times, serenely dark gem. Of course they never intended to release the album and just considered it "four guys getting together in the studio making some music." But their label really liked what they heard, released it as Jar of Flies and whaddya know, it debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
I honestly don't remember how I came across this. It wasn't taken in the last draft (Edit: Just discovered Dirt was, in fact, taken last time.), and while I grew up cognizant of the Seattle grunge explosion of the early 90s, AiC was drowned out by the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam to the point I'm not sure I even knew they existed.
But I do remember the first time I heard the opening bass line (I looked that up
) of Rotten Apple and being immediately drawn in. If I try to talk too much about the structure or craftsmanship, my musical ignorance will reveal itself, so I'll let the songs speak for themselves.

Rotten Apple hypnotized me into a blissful stupor and at the 1:40 mark of Nutshell (specifically), I was hooked.

And those are two of the only three songs out of the album's seven not released as singles. It gets decidedly more upbeat (or at least less suffocatingly depressing) after that with singles chart toppers No Excuses and I Stay Away leading into the string instrumental (that's right) Whale & Wasp, before winding things down with the respectably successful, soulful single Don't Follow and, of all things, the blues/country-inspired closing track Swing on This.
There's so much going on here, so many different styles and approaches to music. Every song is its own, unique entity, but they all work as a cohesive thematic unit as well. It clocks in a just over a half hour and yet I could listen to it on repeat constantly.
Interestingly, Jar of Flies' release is sandwiched by Alice in Chains monster albums that, having decided to be the first to introduce AiC into our draft, might garner me more votes. But as I said, this is the one I love.

Nice pick. I assumed this one would be safe for a while, but it was definitely being considered for later rounds.

No anecdotes of personal attachment here, just an album I really enjoy. This is, in fact, my favorite of Jackson's works, by far, even though it does "pancake" a little after the title track. It does pick back up nicely for the last two tracks. Personally, I much prefer Jackson as a pop singer to a balladeer (I really only like, maybe, three of Michael's "slow" songs, and only one of them appears on this album; he really should have left the crooning to Marvin...), but the first half of this album represent four of my Top Five favorite MJ songs, and five of my Top Eight.

Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty - 1989
Drafts like these can sometimes be useful for refreshing memories of old favorites. In this case I went back to this album and was struck again, as I was originally, by just how deep it is. Its got a classic relaxed California Petty vibe, and produced some monster hits, notably Free Falling, Running Down a Dream, and my personal motto song, I Won't Back Down, which I would sorely miss on an island even if I do know it by heart. But down to the very end of the album its stuffed full of Petty goodness like Yer So Bad, The Apartment Song, Mind with a Heart of Its Own, Zombie Zoo...its just a helluva album, and once I fully remembered that I had to have it along.

i was a bit of a delinquent in high school. after i got my car, i would occasionally ditch class after lunch and head over to Dimple Records for the rest of the afternoon, rifling through the used albums like i was digging for... well, treasure. and like my second pick in the draft (the Cure's Disintegration), Cocteau Twins' Treasure was another of my early discoveries. i found it stranded inside a random pile of used CD's, and i fell in love with the ethereal swirl of the album cover. the song titles appeared to be nominal in nature, and they were strange to me. i wanted to know more...
i asked around until i found an employee who knew who Cocteau Twins were, and he had as much difficulty describing their sound as i still do to this day, so he was gracious enough to put it on the house speakers. i was immediately enchanted. i spent the next 40 minutes leaning against an aisle, listening to something that was changing my perspective in real time, while flipping through the album's liner notes. in that moment, it seemed an infinitely more productive use of my time than suffering through trigonometry. Cocteau Twins were introducing me to a new kind of math...
Treasure transports you to another world, and i can think of no greater need for such an album than when stranded on a desert island. Elizabeth Fraser is known for singing in nonsense syllables and re-purposing familiar words in unfamiliar ways. her vocals are often submerged beneath layers of reverb, as if she's being piped into your speakers from another dimension. it only deepens the sense that the listener has been taken to someplace new. it's like pressing your ear to the wall of a dream. in fact, "dream pop" is as close to a useful genre classification as i can come up with. Treasure is catchy, but dark. it is joyous, but tempered. it is within reach, but incomprehensible. it is sensual, but pure. it's one of the most gorgeous albums i'd ever heard, and remains so...
i would eventually soak up everything on the 4AD record label, and with the Cure's Disintegration also in tow, i became a student of the 80's. of course, this wasn't the 80's i knew from cliche. it wasn't bad hair and worse fashion. it didn't fit into VH1's I Love the 80's time warp. it was something altogether new to me. with the Cure and Cocteau Twins as a musical bedrock, i would discover many more. because Treasure was another portal to an entire musical landscape that was unfamiliar to me, i feel it earns its place as my fourth pick in this draft...

So, Graceland was planned in this spot, and would look pretty good on my island. I'll have to catch a ferry to Capt. Factorial's isle ever so often for a raid. The gloves are coming off, and although the quality of this next pick may be lower than 4th round status would indicate, I don't trust to strategy that it isn't on the radar of others.
With my 4th selection, I choose my favorite album:
Live - Throwing Copper - 1994
The roots of the relevance of this album run into 7th grade for me, as it was a favorite of many classmates and began my interest in early 90s alternative. Prior to that time, my musical aptitude consisted of 70s folk/rock of my parent's generation, classical melodies from choir practice, and the occasional radio-edit. Live was one of the 1st albums that I ever purchased, and remains an album that I can listen through on loop without a skip.
During my Freshman year in college, one of my housemates in the dorms was a music major. He would play T.B.D. and Lightning Crashes on his acoustic guitar, and I would always get a kick out of them. Later that semester, he unfortunately died in a hazing incident; leaving a scar throughout the rest of the year. In his memory, I have pulled this album closer to my heart strings. And now it's on my island!

As for Throwing Copper, it would have been a later round call, but it was under consideration for my island. A very solid album that had me thinking that Live had a chance to actually be the next "big thing" before they turned the corner and faded into obscurity. The album is really worth having for The Dam At Otter Creek alone. T.B.D. is a favorite mood piece, and I think the closing duo of Pillar of Davidson and White, Discussion really rounds the album out (I don't really consider the hidden track the album closer, just a bonus). Nice call.

Coldplay - X&Y
I did not initially listen to Coldplay, in fact i was not even hear one of their songs until 2008 when i met my wife. She introduced me and i have been hooked ever since. Their songs make you want to sway back and forth and contemplate all the wonders that are life. The good and the bad, everything is covered in this masterpiece. I was not really sure which album to pick since they are all very good, but i ended up with X&Y because it has my favorite Coldplay song, "Fix You".

There is no doubt that Jimi hendrix is one of the most influential guitarist of our time. Although one of my fave song of his is 'Red House' which was not included in the US Edition(according to Wiki, it was because Americans did not like Blues music
), I still picked it over the UK version because i'd be losing out on Purple Haze, Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary that are all Hendrix classics.

For those of you who don't know Amy was arguably one of the best female voices Britain has ever produced however in a career marred with drug use she was sadly taken away from us very young in 2011
this was her final album and its simply breathtakingly good.... I would argue its one of the best ever produced but that's just me...

If I'm going to be alone on this desert island for all eternity, there are gonna be times when I just feel like getting drunk and reminiscing about the old days of concerts and friends, etc. I'm pretty sure during one of those daydreams I'll hear a voice yelling out for the all-time favorite request song. So, with this pick, I'm going to make sure I've got "Free Bird" on my island...

I was given a little scare when Full Moon Fever was taken earlier this round, so while I might be able to save this pick for a bit, I better be safe and make it now.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Southern Accents
Petty is another one of those artists that I've loved for so long that I'd probably be happy with any of his albums but when thinking about eternity on an island there is just no other album I'd want more than Southern Accents.
"Don't Come Around Here No More" is my favorite Petty song of all time and one of my favorite songs in general. But more to that, this album has so much depth to it even for only having 9 songs.
"The Best of Everything" may be the hidden gem on the album and other favorites of mine include "Rebels," "Make it Better" and the title track.

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
From "Doo Wop (That Thing)" to "Every Ghetto, Every City," there is just no missing on this album. Of course, without discussing other artists, Lauryn was a part of another musical act before branching out on her own and striking gold with this album in 98. At first, I wasn't crazy when I originally heard Doo Wop but the more I heard, the more I loved. I soon bought the cd and fell in love with the entire collection and with Hill. Once in a blue moon, I will catch "Ex-Factor" or Hill's take of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" on the radio and I just have to stop what I'm doing and listen. With guest appearances from 3 other of my favorite artists and this album is just must-have.

In 1968, psychedelic music was exploding with one group after another. While the focus was generally on the lyrics, there was one group whose lead singer was so incredible, so riveting and indeed so very powerful that it didn't matter what she sang. You stopped and you listened. You felt her music all the way to your toes, and you still do.
With my pick in the fifth round, I'm grabbing Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company, featuring the unbelievable Janis Joplin.
