Desert Island Music Album Draft 2013 - draft complete

Hi guys!

had a nightmare of a week when it has come to this draft, I was in Paris for the week on holiday but the hotel WIFI was broken (which i didnt expect to happen so i hadnt told anyone my picks) all week and this was coupled with the fact i had left my phone at home because of the exorbitant prices when it comes to using it abroad. So i tried to find a computer all week but couldn't find a single one i could use

So I have to apologize wholeheartedly when it comes to this draft and when it is my turn i will make up my picks. I want to assure you all it isnt because i have lost interest and it was never my intention to hold up the draft

I was hoping that I had done a better job of explaining this the last time, so my apologies:

You missed your turn, man; that doesn't mean that you lost your turn. When you miss your turn, you don't have to wait until your next turn comes back around, before you can make up your picks. All it really means is that, you lost your head of the line privileges for the picks in question. For example, you can't come back and be, like, "Dude, I was going to take Garbage!" Like VF21 said, you can make up your picks right now.

It's probably not the best thing to admit in a contest of this nature, but there are better albums left on the scrapped together list from which I'm picking. Quite a few of them, in fact. However, given the conceit of this exercise -- that these albums are the only entertainment that would accompany our island solitude -- it becomes important to sacrifice esteem for, shall we call it, listenability. Franz Ferdinand's debut album was fairly big, thanks largely to the single "Take Me Out" (linked here) getting huge, and the critical response was pretty good at the time, but the album is hardly considered a classic. Additionally, their subsequent releases fizzled and the band has (as far as I know) largely dropped off the map. But none of that matters a whit when I'm grabbing a CD off the shelf and the fact remains that this album has remained one that I've reached for most often and most consistently in the nine years since its release. It's catchy. It's funny. It's good for dancing/singing along to. That's good enough for me.

I am so excited this album is available in such a late round! this is the second album by one of my Favorite Bands! With sales of 5 million copies worldwide, it is the bands most successful album. My ultimate favorite song on this album is "Rooster". The album included four other singles including "Would?", Angry Chair", "Down in a Hole" and "Them Bones'. My favorite unreleased song from this album is "rain when I die". Hearing that song now seems so fitting since the lead singer, Layne Staley had such a horrible end to his life. This is another album which brings back many fond memories. This draft has really been such a wonderful way to remember some of my favorite life moments through music.

I figured it was a great opportunity to pick this album since Kid Rock is playing in town tomorrow night (wish i was going)! This album is the last from Kid Rock to be classified as Hip Hop before he made the cross over to Rock Music. As my Hip Hop selections are low I figured this one would be a great one to add to the mix. My favorite song of the album is "cowboy". I am actually listening to this album right now as I pick. Realizing there are a lot of unreleased tracks on here which are really good.

This album marked a big departure from the sound of Bjork's previous albums, and for that reason I was slow to warm to it, but it's ended up possibly being the album of hers I listen to most often. The Bjork quirks are there, but this time they're placed into a sonic landscape that is big and sweeping and dark, with string sections are common on this album as Casio keyboards. Despite one song that I really can't stand (I'm not at all a fan of, "All is Full of Love," the album's closer and one of its big hits), this album was an easy choice for me even though I also love the rest of her oeuvre.

The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving (2000) (Wiki Link, for what it's worth)

At this point in the draft, with only three albums left to pick, I feel that this one is in some serious danger - not that somebody else is going to pick it (jalfa is not in the draft!), but that before too long I'll let it go and not have any picks left to take it. In some ways, I feel like I almost shouldn't take it for the simple reason that I'm this close to being able to sing/hum the entire album from start to finish...but at the same time that means it definitely belongs on my island. With the Weakerthans, it's less the music than the lyrics that get me - John K. Samson is one heck of a wordsmith as far as I'm concerned and almost every song on this album has at least one verse that amazes me every time I hear it. It's almost impossible for me to even narrow this down to my customary two songs, but I'm going to pick a one from the heavier side and one from the lighter side.

El Camino - The Black Keys (2011)

The second artist/group I'm blatantly ripping off from Gadget's roster. I'd be ashamed if I wasn't also so appreciative. And at least I own up to it.

It's possible The Black Keys have produced better albums than their latest offering. I wouldn't know. After I listened to Gadget's pick of Brothers all the way through, I decided to see what else they had to offer starting with El Camino. I haven't been able to go any further yet because I just wanted to keep hitting the replay button on this one.

Originally when the draft started, I had a legitimately old-school, bluesy band slotted for this pick from whom I basically only really love one song while the rest of their stuff just isn't my thing. With The Black Keys though, I get that same old-school blues and soul I wanted from the other group, but with the added punch of rockabilly - which I honestly never thought I would have any interest.

There's so much I have yet to learn about this band and their genre of music to be able to talk intelligently about them. Until then, I know I was hooked from the moment I heard El Camino's opening track.

Right so this was the first album i ever bought, they went massive in England around 2005/06 and were a local band. This album and the area of Leeds is credited with the was at the start of an indie renaissance over the last decade which is again brilliant for me If you havent heard of them i suggest you check them out as the album is littered with really fun, fast moving and dance-able indie tracks which everyone enjoys

The Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas (2002)

"Fourteen songs about seven people, two houses, a motorcycle, and a locked treatment facility for adolescent boys". Almost exclusively guitar and voice recorded in a boombox, giving the songs that rusty and eerie lo-fi vibe. Needless to say the lyrics here are fantastic and John Darnielle churns out some his best little stories. I don't know if this is my absolute favorite singer/songwriter album but I'm pretty sure it's the one I can relate to better.

The song from this album "Beautiful Day" used to start the soccer highlights show on the TV when i was growing up (link to the opening from the show here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKATrHsDeFI)

Anyway the show moved channels and I could still remember that song and eventually with the help of Youtube many years later I discovered U2 properlly and bought my first album by them a few hours later.... which was of course All That You Can't Leave Behind, loads of quality tracks on the album and somthing i will enjoy on the island
