it's not often that i venture into these kinds of congratulatory threads, but i have to say that, as a kings fan, i'm tremendously proud of demarcus cousins as his breakout season winds down. the improvement is obvious across the board--in his game, in his demeanor on the court, in his attitude towards the team. he's continued to refine his offensive skillset, and he's made great strides on defense; he's learning better how to control his temper, and he's become a better teammate. had demarcus' progress not been stalled by a prior regime that never properly committed to his development, we might have seen these leaps and bounds in years two and three, but it's certainly better late than never in year four, and the sky's the limit in year five, as far as i'm concerned...
i mean, think about this, kf.com: DMC just turned in an absolutely stellar season while the kings have been in an awkward transitional phase, and while the nba world has continued to buy into outdated narratives about cousins' maturity and his ability. he was passed on as an all-star selection, he could very well be passed on as an all-nba selection, and it's his fourth straight season below .500, but his level of play has not tailed off in spite of it all. even during his worst stretch of the year as minor injuries and major disappointments racked up, big cuz was still outplaying the opposition more often than not. i don't know if mike malone is as great a motivator as advertised or if demarcus cousins is as self-motivated by the chip on his shoulder as advertised, or if it's a combination of the two, but just imagine what boogie can do when motivated by a winning record, by a chance at the playoffs, by the hope of a championship. if he can win, he's got a hall of fame-worthy career ahead of him...
that said, i've grown so weary of the endless rebuilding cycle. the kings' front office and coaching staff need to get to work this offseason and build a winner around demarcus. if they can't, then he certainly won't let his prime go to waste in sacramento, nor should he. i'm just praying that PDA has some more magic up his sleeve, as well as a little bit of luck. next season must be .500 or better. there's no more time for excuses. the franchise player is bought in and locked down, but he can't do it by himself. gotta put a real team together, gotta start winning some games...
