Demarcus Freaking Cousins

If the technical stands, we won't be seeing DFC on the court again until the fall. So, I'm taking this opportunity to thank him for everything he has done for the Kings and for us as Kings fans.

Thank you, Demarcus, for making it easy for me to believe again. You ARE truly the future of the Kings and I'll be incredibly glad to be on the journey with you.

Once, now and forever...GO KINGS!!!

A truly amazing, breakout season from Boogie. People say we have seen a star arise in front of our eyes this year but that is not true. We have seen a superstar arise this year. He improved his attitude so much, especially since February. He has become a better defender this year. He has become much more consistent.

I believe he will be the best player in our history when it is all said and done. Excited to watch him lead our team next year (hopefully to the Playoffs).

If you're on Twitter, help spread the word with the #rescindtheT message. Let's get it trending to show our support.

Thanks Boogie!!!

But I actually want the Technical to stand and for DMC to miss the final game.

Here is the reasons why:

1) The Kings are just one game back in the win column with Detroit, so DMC against Phoenix may cause the Kings to win and then the Kings would be tied with Detroit for #7 spot.

2) Also, if DMC gets the technical rescinded, he plays against Phoenix and he may get the 16th technical in that game. That would mean DMC would be suspended for the first game of next season. I would much rather have him miss the last game of this year than the first of next season.

3) Lastly, I think the NBA will rescind this technical, but I don't think it will be beneficial for the Kings in the big picture.

GO KINGS!!!

OMFG. Are you serious?

DID YOU WATCH THE FREAKING GAME? Demarcus was crushed with that call because he didn't deserve it. He has worked incredibly hard and made a promise to the team that he would not do anything to merit one more technical before the end of the year. Because of some stupid official being overly zealous, that promise was broken.

1) Just for the record, Detroit holds the tie-breaker with the Kings, so it doesn't matter if we end up tied with them.

2) That makes NO sense.

3) It will be beneficial to DMC if they rescind the technical. That in and of itself is beneficial to the Kings now and in the future.

It would be beneficial to Cousins, his rep, and his state of mind, hence it would be beneficial to the Kings.

If Detroit holds the Tie Breaker with the Kings, that is even more reason to not win against Phoenix. We currently are one game worse than Detroit and a win against Phoenix drop us into a tie for #7 and cause us to lose and split ping pong balls in the draft lottery with Detroit.

What happens if the Technical is rescinded and he plays against Phoenix and picks up a technical and is suspended for the first game of next year?

It almost happened last year on the last game when he picked up #16, but that was rescinded by the NBA. Otherwise he would of missed the first game of this year.

Just to sort out a couple things here...

If we finish tied with Detroit, the regular season tiebreaker is irrelevant. The league flips a coin to determine who drafts first in the event that neither team wins a spot in the top 3 and we split the ping pong balls for the 7th and 8th spots equally.

Suspensions due to exceeding the maximum allowable total of technical fouls do not carry over to the following season. The worst that can happen to Cousins if he does play in the last game is that he could get 2 technical fouls and get ejected. But even then there are no further ramifications beyond (I believe) a small monetary fine for Cousins.

I'd put the chances of that tech getting rescinded at 50/50. I hope for Cousins sake it does get rescinded. The poor guy played his heart out tonight and didn't deserve that. But even if it doesn't, it's been one hell of a season for Cousins. Most of the media hasn't caught on yet, but he's every bit as talented and dominant as Anthony Davis if not more so and he's a Sacramento King dammit! There should be much rejoicing! :)

I hope you are right, but I thought I remember Grant and Jerry Reynolds saying in that last game last year that the suspension would carry over to the first game of the next year, if it was not reversed by the NBA.

I'm not sure, but I thought that's what they had said on air.

You're absolutely right, they did say that on the air. And like so many other times, they were wrong. :)

it's not often that i venture into these kinds of congratulatory threads, but i have to say that, as a kings fan, i'm tremendously proud of demarcus cousins as his breakout season winds down. the improvement is obvious across the board--in his game, in his demeanor on the court, in his attitude towards the team. he's continued to refine his offensive skillset, and he's made great strides on defense; he's learning better how to control his temper, and he's become a better teammate. had demarcus' progress not been stalled by a prior regime that never properly committed to his development, we might have seen these leaps and bounds in years two and three, but it's certainly better late than never in year four, and the sky's the limit in year five, as far as i'm concerned...

i mean, think about this, kf.com: DMC just turned in an absolutely stellar season while the kings have been in an awkward transitional phase, and while the nba world has continued to buy into outdated narratives about cousins' maturity and his ability. he was passed on as an all-star selection, he could very well be passed on as an all-nba selection, and it's his fourth straight season below .500, but his level of play has not tailed off in spite of it all. even during his worst stretch of the year as minor injuries and major disappointments racked up, big cuz was still outplaying the opposition more often than not. i don't know if mike malone is as great a motivator as advertised or if demarcus cousins is as self-motivated by the chip on his shoulder as advertised, or if it's a combination of the two, but just imagine what boogie can do when motivated by a winning record, by a chance at the playoffs, by the hope of a championship. if he can win, he's got a hall of fame-worthy career ahead of him...

that said, i've grown so weary of the endless rebuilding cycle. the kings' front office and coaching staff need to get to work this offseason and build a winner around demarcus. if they can't, then he certainly won't let his prime go to waste in sacramento, nor should he. i'm just praying that PDA has some more magic up his sleeve, as well as a little bit of luck. next season must be .500 or better. there's no more time for excuses. the franchise player is bought in and locked down, but he can't do it by himself. gotta put a real team together, gotta start winning some games...

I have two things to say. First the Tech was totally bogus. Second is we should have signed Demarcus to a ten year contract like I said!

And Jason Jones puts an end to any speculation about the relationship between DFC and Malone in an article in today's Bee:

“Coach (Michael) Malone has done an incredible job – I don’t think he gets enough credit. So many changes with this team just throughout the season, everything has been on the fly for everyone, and I think he’s done an incredible job keeping us together, keeping us motivated. I’ve been in this situation before with other coaches and this is the most positive that I think we’ve ever been this late in the year with basically no reason to play. So I think he’s done an incredible job.”

On how he feels heading into the offseason:

“I think the future is bright. I’m with Malone until the end – he knows that. He has my back, I’ve got his. You’re going to be seeing him for awhile until he gets rid of me because it won’t be my choice.”

I think something everyone here can agree with (which is rather difficult to do btw) is that the Kings franchise has done a marvelous job at telling Cuz "We got your back." It started with the max extension before this season, putting faith in his potential. Vivek and PDA making it clear from day 1 that Boogie is who we're moving forward with. Having Malone right there in the trenches arguing for Boogie when the refs go crazy/.

What this also makes clear is that we need to be giving our players more credit (Cuz in particular) that he understands the team is in flux right now and that wins aren't coming immediately. Many have argued that Cuz is going to start looking towards his next contract if we don't win next year. Well.. This quote shows he understands what's going on with the team and how hard it is to build a roster during the season. I think he considers this "Year 1" instead of "Year 4" of the rebuild. I mean, how many times have we heard him say over the year that Malone is basically the first real coach who's actually tried to implement offensive and defensive schemes?

This is 100% correct, and exactly what scares me. It is exactly what happened in 2007, and a few other years. In 2007, we finished in a 3-way tie for 8th worst record. Charlotte, NY, and Sacramento were all given an equal amount of combinations that would normally go to 8-10. They then had a coin flip to decide how we would be positioned in the event that none of us moved up. We lost the three way coin flip, putting us in the 10 hole. None of us moved up, so Charlotte got the 8 spot, NY got 9 (which went to Chicago), and we got 10. I remember this well, because everyone really wanted Noah (who went #9) and we ended up with Hawes. Safe to say that little coin flip screwed things up royally.

So- a win against Phoenix and a loss by Detroit would tie us for 7th. Detroit and Sacramento would then split the 7th and 8th place combinations, and a coin flip would occur to rank one of us 7th and one of us 8th for the lottery. So, a win over Phoenix would lower our chances to move up to top 3 (because we would have an average of the 7th-8th combos rather than the 7th place combos), and would give us a 50/50 shot to slot into the 8th lottery position behind Detroit, if no one moves up.

I always want to win, but I would much rather lose if it guarantees the #7 pick rather than #8, just like I wish we could go back and lose whatever silly game we won in 2007 and have Noah.

Does not compute.

If we don't have Cuz for Weds. I give them my full endorsement for the advantageous loss. If we have him, he wants to win, so go out and win it if you can, hopefully behind some obscenely monster Cuz effort, and let the coin fall where it may.

Having the 7th best record DOESN'T guarantee diddly and/or squat. I would think all Kings fans would know this by now.

Yeah, a poor choice of words by me, but please don't pretend you don't know what I meant. Right now, we are guaranteed to pick ahead of Detroit, are guaranteed to have the 7th best shot to move up, and are guaranteed to slot in at no worse than the 7th highest pick after the top 3 spots are filled.

If we win on Wednesday, we have a 50/50 shot to pick ahead of Detroit, are guaranteed to have a lower percentage chance to move up to 1-3, and have a 50/50 shot to be the 7th highest pick after the top 3 spots are filled.

I fully understand we are guaranteed nothing. My point is that there are long odds for either us or Detroit to move up. If one of us gets lucky enough to move up, I damn well want to make sure we have more combinations in play than they do. If neither of us moves up, I damn well want to draft ahead of them, whether it be at 7, 8, 9, or 10.

A snarky bunch on this board today. What I meant is that I have always been in the "just win" and don't worry about the stupid hand-wringing over tanking, "lins," etc... My thought is that it is much more fun to rot for wins in March/early April when you don't know what impact any one win or loss will have. However, when you have 81 games in the books, and know that a win in the last game IS GUARANTEED to decrease your lottery odds, and makes it a 50/50 shot that another team moves ahead of you on the lottery list, it is a lot harder to get in the "win at all costs" mentality.

Seriously, imagine we win the game on Wednesday, lose the coin flip with Detroit, and neither of us moves up. Let's assume no one else moves up. They draft #7 and take Vonleh (or whoever else is the current flavor of the month at #7). We go 8th, clearly wanted Vonleh, and get stuck taking Tyler Ennis, Aaron Gordon, or someone else who is not a good fit. In that case, winning that last game might have cost you big time (much like the difference between one late season game got us Hawes instead of Noah).

Or imagine that we win, give up lottery combinations to Detroit, and Detroit moves into the top 3. This board will be apoplectic with the possibility that one of the combinations we gave up by beating the Suns was the one that gave Detroit the top 3 pick. Would you want to win a game against the Suns and sacrifice your chance at Embid? I sure don't. Of course we would never know if the combination we gave up was the winning ticket, but why take that risk?

I get that nothing is guaranteed, and it is often more fun to root for the win. But here, we know that a win will have definite negative impact on our lottery rights.

I've loved Cousins since he played at Kentucky. I wanted the Kings to draft him and was thrilled when they did. He's had a hard road to tow, but all the emotional pain and hard work is starting to pay off for him. Because of his size, Cousins has been looked at, and treated like a man, along with the normal expectations of a man since he was 12 or 13 years old. Unfortunately, inside that man's body, a child was hiding, along with the understanding and emotions of a child. Makes for a bad combination. Now that child is growing up before our eyes and the results are dazzling. The fact that Cuz is only 23 years old, and is already breaking Kings records, such as Webbers double/double record for one year is amazing. Congratulations on a great year, and on being, in my opinion, the best center in the NBA.

Keep your head up and keep on doing what your doing. At some point, they won't be able to deny the elephant in the room. You will be the last MAN standing!!!

Great article! At the beginning of this season there was a poll I believe about what it would take for this season to be considered a success. I don't recall what the consensus was, but I said at the time that a big season from Cousins and Coach Malone earning the trust of his players were the most important factors for me. It's been a long and bumpy journey to get here, but I feel pretty confident checking both of those boxes today. The new arena is moving forward as planned, we have our franchise guy, and it looks like we have our coach too. All in all, I couldn't really ask for much more.
