darko

If we can get Darko for MLE we would be laughing all the way to the bank.

I think that our competition for his services would increase dramatically as I think there would be many teams out there who would be prepared to use their MLE on him.

I think he will possibly end up somewhere where he can get more than the MLE. Maybe even Atlanta.

The only way we have an edge for Darko is if we're giving him the starting PF spot and 30+ minutes a game. Along with him maybe still having some fond feelings of the organization based on our history of having a couple of the best serbian players in history.

I don't really see the incentive for Orlando at this point to work out a S&T with Seattle, unless Seattle could offer them picks or something, which wouldn't really make sense for them. Then you have to look at Memphis as the most likely destination. They could put Darko alongside Pau.

But if Memphis isn't interested.... the field is wide open and Darko has his choice at the MLE.

The incentive for Orlando to do a sign and trade that would help keep darko. But seriously its not like a Lewis and Howard duo is champonship combo keeping darko, who is improving, would be huge to the magic cause.

Darko looks like he is gone we really should make a run at him.

I agree, Orlando would probably like to keep Darko, but that would mean putting together a package of around $13-14 million of non-Darko assets that would be appealing to Seattle. They can package up Arroyo, Garrity and Dooling for around $10 million in expirings... would they be then willing to part with a good young player or two and/or picks to make that worth it to Seattle? I'm not so sure. Maybe Ariza, who is third string now, but wouldn't be so appealing to Seattle.

Still, it leaves them with a really thin lineup, and a trade like that is extremely hard to pull off. I think it's a longshot.

I think Memphis is the team that has made the contract offer to Varejao so that would put them out of the running unless Cleveland matches which I doubt they do. Not sure why Seattle would even want to do a sign and trade to bring back crap as they probably don't want anything that Orlando can give them.

So, it is time for Petrie, the Maloofs & Reggie to gather with Darko at the Palms and sell him on coming to Sac. He will be the starter and it's his chance to shine. Pair him in the middle and put Brad at the PF and that instantly upgrades our front line.

Highly doubt it will happen as it would be a monumental sales job but since Reggie is known as a good recruiter(at least on the college level) it may work.

OK, so Darko is looking to free agency, which means two things:

- Getting some money from Atlanta or Milwaukee.
- Getting MLE.

If he has any sense, he will steer clear of Hawks and Bucks, in fact nothing to see for him in EC.

If he wants the best basketball situation for him - it's in Texas, Houston, Dallas or even SA.

Still, I think that only we can offer him pretty much guaranteed starting spot, minutes and a chance to build NBA career of some substance. Rockets could to, but let's face it RA is not known for suffering fools gladly (see Wallace, Gerald) no matter what their upside.

god that would suck if he ended up in SA

It would suck for him. Pop would be on his @@@ 24/7. I also think that Pop would steer clear of Darko because the potential for Darko-Pop dynamics being like Darko-Larry Brown is high.

But, if that something intangible clicks in Darko's head one of these days, he would be perfect for SA.

Pop would make a player and a man out of him. And Spurs are already too good for the NBA. No need making them stronger

Looks like Darko is now officially an unrestricted free agent. I think this also means no S&T is possible/necessary:

Milicic now unrestricted free agent after Magic withdraws offer

One day after coming to a verbal agreement with free agent Rashard Lewis, the Orlando Magic withdrew their qualifying offer for restricted free agent Darko Milicic on Tuesday.

The move in effect means that the Magic have renounced their rights to Milicic and he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Milicic's agent Marc Cornstein said the move took him by surprise. He said Magic GM Otis Smith called him earlier in the day to tell him the team wanted to keep Darko and would begin exploring ways to make it happen.

"I think it is unfortunate how dishonest and decitiful Otis Smith and the Orlando Magic have been in the process," Cornstein said. "However, I think it can be a good thing for Darko. I believe Darko is the most coveted free agent in the market now. We are excited to get a fresh start with a team that truly believes in him."

Said Smith of the Magic's decision: "Our goals remains the same: to sign a free agent and try to retain Darko. It hasn't changed."

Now, any team in the league can sign Milicic without fear of the Magic matching an offer. Only three teams, the Bobcats, Grizzlies and Bucks, have the cap room available to offer more than the mid-level exception. A fourth team, the Chicago Bulls, might be able to clear enough room if they were to renounce their rights to free agent Andreas Nocioni.

If neither Charlotte or Memphis are interested, Milicic will likely have to sign a one- or two-year deal for the mid-level exception and re-enter the free-agent market next summer to look for a bigger deal.

Milicic was looking for a long-term deal averaging between $9 and $10 million a year, according to league sources.

Cornstein said that the Magic actually came very close to signing Milicic to an extension this fall, but unexpectedly withdrew their offer at the last minute.

"There has been a pattern of deception here," Cornstein said. "It started with Otis making an offer and the pulling it. He told us in private Darko was his No. 1 priority this offseason. As much of five hours Smith called me to tell me he wanted to do a sign-and-trade with Rashard to keep Darko in Orlando."

The move puzzled a number of GMs in the league who wondered why the Magic didn't at least attempt to get something of value for Milicic.

"They gave up a No. 1 pick for him and he has enormous trade value," one GM said. "A number of teams would've talked with them about sign-and-trades, including us. But Otis didn't return calls and we never heard from him. It makes no sense."

If Milcic does decide to sign a mid-level deal, expect the most competitive teams to be ones like the 76ers and Spurs that will have signficant cap room to re-sign him in the summer of 2008.

if GP has any magic left in his arsenal, here is his chance.... get darko signed for 5 years/35mil or a one year with an option for the mle now... darko will have a great chance to play with the kings immediatley...

If we have any shot at Milicic, I would suspect it would be a relatively short term deal so he can get another shot at free agency.

i would pay mid-level he has a lot of learning to do and he isn't that good, yes he's developing a nice jumper in addition with some what of some post moves but not really strong and not really a good rebounder, so mid-level is what i would pay for a player of his caliber.

Magic is now out of picture even if they free up cap space to sign him.

Milicic's agent: Darko won't play for Magic as long as Smith is GM

Power forward Darko Milicic never will play for the Orlando Magic this season or any other "as long as Otis Smith is general manager," an irate Marc Cornstein, told the Sentinel.

Late Tuesday, shortly after the Magic withdrew their qualifying offer to Milicic -- whom Smith had said was a priority before the free-agent courting period began -- Cornstein blasted Smith for being a "liar." He called Smith's handling of his client "deceitful, disrespectful and a disgrace."

Cornstein said Smith had indicated that the Magic wanted to re-sign Milicic, but then sent an e-mail to him Tuesday telling him they had withdrawn their qualifying offer and made him an unresticted free agent.

Said Smith, "Our goals remain the same. To sign a free agent and try to retain Darko."

Cornstein said there's no chance.

"There's no chance. Put it in big capital letters," Cornstein said. "You can say that as long as Otis Smith is the general manager of the Orlando Magic, there's no chance."

Cornstein said that when the Magic did not contact him when the free-agency courting period began, "He didn't want to be here in the end. If Otis Smith had been a decent human and told us that Rashard Lewis was the player they wanted and would have to sacrifice Darko to get him, my reaction wouldn't have been happiness. But I would have said, 'I appreciate you telling me.'

"Instead, the guy told us Darko was a priority, and he lied."

Oh the gall.

Smith's behavior in all this does sound a little shaky, and I would be tweaked myself. But for an AGENT, essentially the slimiest most disgusting form of homo sapiens yet uncovered, to complain so vehemently because somebody allegedly mislead him is just hilarious. Its like a car thief running ot the police when somebody jacks the ride he himself just jacked yesterday.

I think we might be out of this unless GP finds a way to clear some cap space for next summer so that we can re-sign Darko to a longer deal that will get him more than the MLE.

As things stand now, we won't be anywhere near under the cap with all these big contracts on the books and Martin due to receive an extension with a hefty increase.

Our best hope is to try to convince Darko to sign with us for 3 years at MLE. We would then have his bird rights and could offer him a better long term deal.

I hope GP can pull it off but I can't see it.

I don't think we have a shot.

I think we might, it seems like the one thing Darko may want more than anything else is guaranteed playing time and a starting spot. If we could promise him a starting PF spot and clear a little bit of cap space to be able to sign him to an extension in a year or 2 I think we are right in the mix. All it would take is 1 deal to make that space.

Ditto. IMO Kings can give him best option except money. We're rebuilding, our new coach was from college, who may be more comfortable with Darko, and we have a really big hole at PF. Until now, Darko seems to be not so good. He always was surrounded by better big men, Big Ben and Rasheed in Pistons, and Dwight in Magic. But things are really different in Kings, currently our frontcourts are very thin and lack athletism, which can make him better player.

We can suggest him a starting spot and enough playing time, favorable environment because of rebuliding, AND maybe money.

Our heavy contracts will be off after 09-10 season. Miller, Thomas, and Rahim at the same time. Sum of those contracts is 25.3mil !!! Surely we can trade them, and we need to re-sign Martin, but we will have MONEY. He can join us at MLE for three years, and we may offer him more money after 09-10.

Come on Darco, and come on Petrie. Do something!

Excuse me, but agents are only the 3rd slimiest carbon based life form in the universe - after realtors and lawyers. :D

The magic still want to sign darko and are still in talks to do a sign and trade deal with Seattle to get the cap room to sign him. From what i heard from Orlando they did in fact withdraw the qualifying offer to release the cap hold to sign lewis. But the thing is the magic still have his Bird rights and the right resign him. This basically means they could go over the cap to resign him, how willing the magic to do this i don't know. This is said in the magic press release:

http://aol.nba.com/magic/news/Magic_Withdraw_Qualifying_Offe-230661-800.html

The biggest problem right now is Darko's agent. The magic wanted to offer Darko 8 million but his agent wanted 10. Since no team has the abilitly or in their right mind will give Darko that kind of money his agent is now angry. Now that Darko is renonced he is looking at a deal for the mle for one year then returning to a packed free agency in 08, thats if a deal is not worked out with Orlando.

From all accounts the magic still want to keep Darko. They are still trying to do a sign and trade with the sonics to clear some cap space, they have turned down offers for Darko, and Oits still maintains that they want to resign him by saying "Our goals remain the same -- to sign a free agent and try to retain Darko. It hasn't changed."

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070704/SPORTS/707040347/1002/SPORTS\

And i kind of agree with Darko's agent that Otis has been a little deceitfull. All year Otis has said signing darko was his main goal and even after the season ended that was said. But it seems like he has put Darko on the back burner by first not contacting him on the first day of free agency and with this current situation. To me resigning Darko should be a must for the magic because getting a big of his capabilitly is rare, also add losing him would make their front court really slim.

If Darko does not agree to sign with the magic he would be a perfect for us. He would most likely sign for one year at the mil but will get to show off his skills on a rebuilding kings team, this way earning his big pay day. It should be easy to retain him with Bibby off the books next year.

Bibby is NOT off the books next year since he has another 2 years on his deal. Even if he is, we still wouldn't be too far under the cap to re-sign Darko, especially since Martin's extension would kick in next summer as well.

I might be wrong here but I am sure there are restrictions in place for teams under the cap. IIRC Magic had to resign their FAs before they knew how much money they had to spend. I think the rules prhibit them from spending all their cap room on another teams FA and them re-signing their FAs.

Magic can only offer Darko what is left of their salary cap room and thats is less than the MLE that other teams can offer. The only way Magic can sign Darko is if they do a sign and trade for Lewis but apart from Darko, I don't think there is anyone else that would be of any great interest to the Sonics. They might take some expiring contracts off Orlando only if the pick is thrown in.

Bibby has this year and next year on his deal. He has another opt out clause in his contract which he'll probably use as long as he doesn't get injured again causing him to have a crappy season. Therefor, Bibby=FA.

Didn't know bibby's contract was that long thought next year would be his last.Wow, we really have two more years to put up with bibby's bad play, lol. Now i really agree a resigning of Darko would be impossible espeacially with extension of Martin.

The magic still have Darko's bird rights so basically if they want to resign Darko and go over the cap they could, this was said in the first link. But really i don't know how willing the magic are to do this.

If we can get him, that would almost make up for the lack of draft day trades. Artest for Lee and a Darko signing would make our frontcourt look surprisingly good considering what we started with.

Got this Darko vid off of the RealGM Kings forum...he's pretty good. (Obviously it shows his best moments, but he is obviously very long and athletic with nice shot blocking.)
