Mexico Shuts Cancun Beach, Alleges Sand Was Stolen

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,535820,00.html?test=latestnews

MEXICO CITY — Surprised tourists found their little piece of Cancun beach paradise ringed by crime-scene tape and gun-toting sailors on Thursday.
Environmental enforcement officers backed by Mexican navy personnel closed off hundreds of feet of powder-white coastline in front of a hotel accused of illegally accumulating sand on its beach.
Mexico spent $19 million to replace Cancun beaches washed away by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. But much of the sand pumped from the sea floor has since washed away, leading some property owners to build breakwaters in a bid to retain sand. The practice often merely shifts sand loss to beaches below the breakwaters.
"Today we made the decision to close this stretch of ill-gotten, illegally accumulated sand," said Patricio Patron, Mexico's attorney general for environmental protection
. "This hotel was telling its tourists: 'Come here, I have sand ... the other hotels don't, because I stole it."'
Patron said five people were detained in a raid for allegedly using pumps to move sand from the sea floor onto the beach in front of the Gran Caribe Real Hotel. The hotel is also suspected of illegally building a breakwater that impeded the natural flow of sand onto other hotels' beaches, he said.
An employee of the hotel's marketing office said nobody was available to comment on the allegations. Authorities said the hotel owner ignored previous orders to remove the breakwater.
A knot of angry tourists gathered around the closed beach.
Some were irked by the sight of police tape and "Closed" signs.
Maria Bachino, a travel agent
from Rocha, Uruguay, said by telephone that she had booked a beachfront room in Cancun, only to find herself cut off from the clear, bathub-temperature waters that lure millions to Cancun each year.
"They promised us a beach," said Bachino. "This is very unpleasant, we feel bad. This is intimidating," she said of the armed navy personnel who participated in the raid.
Patron said he regretted any inconvenience for tourists, but said the government is planning projects to restore beaches throughout Cancun in an orderly, environmentally responsible way.
"I apologize to the tourists for this problem, but it is a question of enforcing the law," Patron said.

Mark Madsen caught in middle of domain name theft

The Associated Press reports that Daniel Goncalves, 25, of New Jersey, hacked into an online account belonging to one of the owners of the popular P2P.com domain name.

Once inside The Matrix, Goncalves allegedly shifted ownership to himself and resold the address on eBay to "good faith" purchaser Madsen for $111,000. He likely had dinner with the Woman in the Red Dress, too.

Goncalves faces three different felony charges. State police say each count could carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in the Los Angeles Clippers locker— err, prison.

6 months in jail for YAWNING

(Aug. 10) -- As Clifton Williams sat in the courtroom in Joliet, Ill., awaiting his cousin's sentencing on drug charges, little did he know he would soon be the one in jail.

As Judge Daniel Rozak sentenced Williams' cousin to two years probation, Williams yawned, an act that earned him six months in jail on contempt charges, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Williams' father said he was "flabbergasted" by the sentence, the maximum issued for a contempt charge without a jury trial. "It seems to me like a yawn is an involuntary action," Clifton Williams Sr. told the newspaper.

The court disagreed. While Rozak did not comment on the charges, a state's attorney's office spokesman, Chuck Pelkie, said Williams did not let out a "simple" yawn. "It was a loud and boisterous attempt to disrupt the proceedings," he said.

According to the Tribune, Rozak is particularly fierce on courtroom decorum, issuing contempt-of-court charges at the highest rate of any judge in the county. The broad discretion of judges to control their courts has prompted Rozak to file contempt charges against people for everything from swearing to not silencing their cell phones.

However, some of the people Rozak assigned harsh sentences to were shown leniency if they apologized.

Williams will have to serve as least 21 days, the Tribune reported, and he has been locked up since July 23. In a letter to his family, Williams wrote, "I really can't believe I'm in jail."

Teen Sets Self On Fire To Imitate YouTube Clip

Mom Points Finger At Video Web Site

DELTONA, Fla. -- A Deltona teenager was hospitalized on Wednesday after suffering multiple burns while imitating a video posted on YouTube.

Russell Gortzig, 13, said his friend siphoned gasoline from a riding lawnmower and poured it on Gortzig. The teen said he held the lighter away from him, but a combination of the spark and fumes caught his shorts on fire.

...

McCrea said the boys were trying to copy a stunt they saw on the video sharing Web site, YouTube, where a man in a banana suit lights himself on fire. She warned other parents to closely monitor the online activities of their children and wants YouTube to tighten its user guidelines. She believes YouTube is partially to blame for her son' pain.

Texas Sheriff Reprimands Officers Over Waitress Photo

AP

Aug. 10: In this photo provided by the Midland County Sheriff, an unidentified waitress at Twin Peaks Restaurant poses for a photo in Round Rock.

MIDLAND, Texas — An embarrassed Sheriff Gary Painter fired one Midland County deputy and suspended three others without pay after a scantily dressed waitress holding a rifle posed for photographs on the hood of a patrol vehicle.
Round Rock officers were dispatched to the restaurant after someone reported the waitress with the weapon, which had been given to her by one of the deputies who had been attending a training session near Austin.
The incident occurred last week in the parking lot of a Twin Peaks restaurant, which promotes its "fun, friendly and sometimes flirty atmosphere!"
The deputies told Painter that they had about three to five beers each.
A fifth deputy who remained inside the eatery got a letter of reprimand.

High praise for football player who disarmed girl with gun on bus

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/09/03/mississippi.bus.hero/index.html

(CNN) -- A Mississippi high school football player is being hailed as a hero for saving a school bus full of elementary and high school students from a gun-wielding girl.
Kaleb Eulls, 18, says he acted because he "couldn't let anything happen" to the children on the bus.

Surveillance camera footage on the Yazoo County school bus on Tuesday captured 18-year-old Kaleb Eulls tackling the 14-year-old girl while the children evacuated the bus.
He managed to wrestle the .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun from her, Yazoo County Sheriff Thomas Vaughan told CNN.

Stranger slaps crying child in Walmart
According to the arresting officer, the child's mother said her daughter was crying as they walked down one of the aisles.

The mother said a stranger later identified as Stephens approached them and said, "If you don't shut the baby up, I will shut her up for you."

A few moments later, while the mother and the crying child were in another aisle, Stephens allegedly grabbed the girl and slapped her across the face.

Police said he hit her four or five times. "See, I told you I would shut her up," the suspect allegedly told the mother.
Had that happened to my daughter, it would have been me getting arrested. My daughter is well-behaved for the most part, and aside from a couple of times, doesn't act out in public. Wouldn't have been screaming inside a store, maybe crying, but not loud enough to upset anyone else. And I've seen kids throwing an all-out fit in the store, and wanted to slap them. But you don't put your hands on someone else's child, especially if you don't know them.

I would have been arrested, too. Whether just crying or an all out tantrum, I would never hit somebody's child.

This was a toddler. Toddlers cry and throw tantrums. Adults are supposedly more mature and have better control of their emotions than a toddler, or child or teenager. Sorry, no excuses for a grown up with a lack of control.

I feel sympathy. I've heard some say that the parent should just leave with the child. That may be okay at times, when it isn't the only time you have to do the shopping and you've already spent the bus fare or gas to get there. That's hard to do, though, if you have a basket full of groceries and have to have them. My son never threw an outright tantrum, but he could be disruptive in his behavior, at times. Believe me, there was no adult there suffering more than me. :(

Less than two hours after the robbery, police said that Bennett, 20, returned to the home and asked the woman out.

Nude, Gun-Wielding 91-Year-Old Man Helps Make Arrest of Home Intruder

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,553062,00.html?test=latestnews

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — Authorities say a 91-year-old man in South Florida jumped out out of bed naked and held an intruder breaking into his house at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
The Palm Beach

Thompson heard the commotion, grabbed his .38-caliber revolver and phoned police without ever getting dressed.
Deputies say Thompson fired a warning shot at 26-year-old Jose Pasqual after the intruder started to come toward him. Pasqual was booked in the Palm Beach County Jail and did not immediately have an attorney.

Man Arrested at Apple Store After Threatening to Shoot His iPhone with a 9mm Handgun

http://gizmodo.com/5372631/man-arrested-after-threatening-to-shoot-his-iphone-at-an-apple-store

I know it's frustrating when your phone is borked, but telling an Apple Store staffer that you're "so mad I could pop a 9mm at it"—before revealing you actually have a real 9mm concealed—probably won't help matters.
But that's what a man allegedly did yesterday at the Apple Store in Cincinnati's Kenwood mall. According to reports, the man continued, "I'll do it right now. Look!", and opened the right side of his shirt to show a black 9mm handgun.
Kudos to the Apple Store employee who stayed calm and said she'd get it fixed. She walked him over to a technician before informing her manager, who called police.
The man was charged with "aggravated menacing, causing fear of harm". And even though he has a concealed weapons permit, could face charges for the gun because he didn't tell the deputy on the scene that he had it. Now that's some iPhone rage. [WCPO 9]

It was unclear whether Galipeau or Jackson have hired an attorney.

Wisconsin Mom Strips in Front of Kids to Avoid Arrest

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,563481,00.html?test=latestnews

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Police say a Wisconsin woman stripped in front of her children in an attempt to avoid arrest for shoplifting, then scuffled with officers and exposed herself through a squad car window.
Julia E. Laack, 36, of Sheboygan was charged Friday with felony battery of a peace officer, resisting an officer, shoplifting and two counts of disorderly conduct, the Sheboygan Press reported.
The criminal complaint alleges Laack stole a bag of beef jerky and a lighter at a convenience store Thursday afternoon. Police went to her home. The complaint said she refused to come to the door and began screaming and swearing at three children in her house, telling one that the incident was all his fault.
Police entered and tried to calm her down. With her children present, the complaint said, she stripped to her underwear and told the officers they couldn't arrest her because she would be naked.
Laack struggled with the officers as they tried to arrest her, the complaint alleged, kicking one in the groin and spitting in the mouth of another.
While in the squad car on the way to the police station, the complaint said, Laack exposed her buttocks against the rear window
.
The complaint said Laack had a preliminary blood-alcohol level of 0.112 percent. The legal blood-alcohol limit for driving is 0.08 percent.
Laack remained in jail Friday night. A man who answered the phone at her home declined comment.

Cops Caught Playing Wii During Raid

http://www.dailytech.com/Cops+Caught+Playing+Wii+During+Raid/article16325.htm

Wii turns out to be more addictive than crack, even cops are hooked

Addictions make people do horrible things. For example, it can make people play video games on the job, despite their better judgment. That's what happened with one particularly addictive video game system, the Nintendo Wii. And it wasn't just any average Joe that was playing it -- a group of cops were apparently caught playing the Wii during a drug raid. As stated, addiction can make people do terrible things.

The seasoned cops busted into the house of Michael Difalco, an alleged drug dealer who was already in custody. Searching it for drugs, they found a bag that they suspected to contain methamphetamine. Then they found something much more intriguing and addictive -- the suspect's big screen TV (bought with ill-gotten money in all likelihood) and a Nintendo Wii.

Succumbing to their addiction, more than one male and female cop began playing rounds of Wii Bowling as they cataloged evidence. Their romp even featured celebratory posturing on some of their strikes. And unfortunately it was all caught by the suspect's hidden camera.

The cops may have landed in a bit of trouble for their behavior. Defense attorney Rick Escobar who revealed the footage says it's proof that the police executed the warrant inappropriately and violated his client's rights. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd agrees that the Wii-playing may have been ill-considered, but defends the search, stating, "We executed that search warrant appropriately from a legal sense."

Ironically, the hidden camera was housed in a faux speaker attached to the suspect's computer. For some reason the police did not decide to seize the computer, despite the fact that it might have contained evidence of wrongdoing. If they had, they might have prevented the embarrassing footage from leaking.

In the end, though, leak it did and the world gets a glimpse of the effects of Wii addiction on the brain. The footage also lends hope to those that wish that antics found on shows like Reno 911 would occur in real life. The trial between the red-fingered cops and the Wii-didn't-do-it drug dealer should be an entertaining one, to say the least.

Minn. Man Pleads Guilty Driving La-Z-Boy Chair Drunk

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,569204,00.html?test=latestnews

DULUTH, Minn. — A Minnesota man has pleaded guilty to driving his motorized La-Z-Boy chair while drunk.
A criminal complaint says 62-year-old Dennis LeRoy Anderson told police he left a bar in the northern Minnesota town of Proctor on his chair after drinking eight or nine beers.
Prosecutors say Anderson's blood alcohol content was 0.29, more than three times the legal limit, when he crashed into a parked vehicle in August 2008. He was not seriously injured.
Police said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower and had a stereo and cup holders.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Heather Sweetland stayed 180 days of jail time Monday and ordered two years of probation for Anderson. His attorney, David Keegan, did not immediately return a call for comment.

PHILADELPHIA - An armed robbery suspect who police said photographed himself with his victim's cell phone has surrendered.
Kadeen Cooke, 18, turned himself in at the Philadelphia Police Department's North Detectives late Thursday night.
Attorney Shaka Johnson said his client called the moment he knew police were looking for him.

Police allege that Cook photographed himself after stealing a woman's cell phone during a robbery last month.

Florida Man Calls 911 for Ride to Bar

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,581461,00.html?test=latestnews

OLDSMAR, Fla. — Authorities say a Florida man who called 911 claiming he'd been beaten and shot at was hoping the tale would get him a ride to a bar.
Instead, 37-year-old Gregory J. Oras is facing charges of misusing the 911 system and battery of a law enforcement
officer.
An arrest report says Oras called 911 three times before his arrest early Tuesday in Oldsmar, northwest of Tampa
. He told the dispatcher he had a broken nose and bleeding ears, and claimed people were shooting at him.
Authorities say he was actually looking for a ride to another bar.
The report also says Oras kicked a Pinellas County sheriff's deputy in the knees and a Taser was used to subdue him.
Online records show he is being held at the Pinellas County Jail but don't indicate whether he has an attorney.
