Cousins going on KHTK Very soon (2/8/2011)

Grant has been pumping up this interview all day, says its "rare" for Cousins to do it. Just wanted to let people know if they are around a radio. I'll be listening. Lets see how nice Grant is to him after how much he slammed him after choke-gate .. Hey Grant, still think we should have sent him down to the DLeague??;)

He hated Bill Walton until he wound up working with him

DeMarcus is obviously an intelligent guy. Only good things will come for this man. So much for red flags.

Got to be honest, some awkward moments in that first section. Grant isnt the best interviewer, that is for sure.

The biggest thing is that he clearly knows he isnt a finished product, and that this team isnt a finished product. Its important for young players who come from winning programs to realize things WILL get better, but you have to work hard for it.

I liked his comparison of Calipari to Westphal. "Cal was crazy, really out of his mind crazy. He told me when recruited that he was crazy and that I would have to deal with it if I wanted to play for him." "Coach Westphal is more laid back, not much yelling." Meanwhile, during 1hr+ interview with DMC he had one eye/ear on UK-Tenn ESPN game with John Wall courtside - Cuz saying he was jealous that his former teammate was enjoying it live in Lexington. Overall, good interview. Also, told story on how he got "Boogie" nickname from a UK assistant coach.

Note: Looks like entire interview will be up on KHTK website by tomorrow for anyone wanting to listen who didn't catch it today.

Grant Napear is about as two-faced as you can get for a radio personality. At least other abrasive guys will stick to their guns when they make a point (ex: Grant's hero, Jim Rome, probably wouldn't suck it up as hard as Grant does when placed in front of the people that he blasts on air.). It's why most of Grant's interviews end up as little more than fluff pieces. Tough to respect a radio host like that.

The bottom line is, Grant Napear is a coward. How the hell this reeking biased New York dude survives for a quarter century in the Sacramento sports media market is astonishing. There's no way his arrogant style makes it in LA, Bay Area or virtually anywhere outside of East Coast. Maybe it says a lot about overall dumb down Sac.

I'll always give Grant some sort of credit for his PBP. I like him in that setting, I think he has a good voice for it and we could be forced to listen to MUCH worse.

Ive only listened to his radio stuff on my Iphone, and only when he's having an interview Im interested in or if the Kings made a trade, ect .. But from what I've herd, he's pretty terrible. I dont know if its the style of sports talk radio in California, or HIS style, but it just sounds so hectic and annoying. He'll blaze through callers and rarely address anything they say, usually just adding a 'yup' or 'no' or some stupid one sentence response and then move on to someone else. His "Rants" are just him saying something over and over again using slightly different words.

I don't get the milktoast attitudes. Did any of you haters ever stop to think maybe more people like Grant than hate him, and you might be in the minority? The guy is hugely respected by his sports media colleagues. He gets some of the best interviews with top names around all facets of the sports world. Basically because he knows his sh*t and he doesn't tip toe around. I am a fan. That's right I said it.

You mean milquetoast? Are you saying that since the majority allegedly likes someone that is two-faced that dissenters have a milquetoast attitude? Your deduction methods might have some flaws in them. Are you assuming that all interviews are voluntary? Sports media colleagues respect Napear? Sources?

You have to understand Grants roots. He grew up in the same neighborhood and was boyhood friends with Mad Dog Russo and Mike Lupica. He's also very good friends with many of the NBA radio announcers around the league. But bottom line is that if you grew up in the east, Grant is the type of radio announcer that you would be used to. As for popularity, he has one of the highest rated radio shows in northern california. So while you may not like him, obviously many do.

I'm also amazed that people call him a coward. A coward wouldn't call out a player and then have the brass one's to get on a plane with the same player. Sorry mi amigo, that takes guts. That player may not like him, and he and Grant resolve that is anyone's guess. But Grant isn't afraid to call out anyone. And don't get me wrong. I'm not necessarily agreeing with him in all cases. Probably not in most cases. But thats his problem to resolve, since he's the one that has to interview these guys. As I've said before. I like Grants show because I can always be sure of one thing. He's going to talk about sports and not the musical he went to at the, or the Academy awards show on television.

do u think this might have anything to do with the time slot he's on and the fact that there arent a lot of options for sports radio during the time slot. i usually only listen to the radio on my way to work and on the way home. my 2 options are espn and khtk. i usually listen to the rise guys over cowherd in the mornings but on the way home it depends on whether i want to hear whats goin on locally vs nationally. if there were more options available that talked about the kings, i would definitely switch over but the whole "if u dont like it dont listen" thing he brings up all the time doesnt work when hes the only thing available to kings fans driving home from work

Yeah, I don't see the why everyone hates Grant so much. I almost think it's the cool thing to do. The "other" kings site, has the same hatred for him, and has even printed up shirts making fun of him, for a few years running now.

Some things I agree with, some I don't. Maybe it's the fact I grew up in NY, and I'm used to his type of personality, that I'm not bothered by it. If anything, given the number of clueless callers he gets on a daily basis, I'm surprised he doesn't snap more often. Other NY, and east coast broadcasters probably wouldn't be as tolerant as Grant, believe it or not.

The other thing about grant, as Bajaden referred to, is that you know you'll get sports when tuning in. I hated Koz, and he would just talk about stuff no one cared about. I don't think he knew basketball that well either, from some of the things I've heard him say. Lamb was pretty clueless to, and gave the type of insight about the Kings I would expect from a 15 yr old. Jason Ross, is nice, but I question how much he knows as well. He sugarcoats just about every negative thing he has to say about the team, and with he and Henry Turner, Kingstalk is something I never listen to anymore. Doesn't offer anything I don't already know. No new insight.

So while it appears a lot of people here don't like Grant, IMO, he's the best KHTK has, and that's partly because no one else at the station seems to have more knowledge than an average fan.

Grant does better filling in for Rome then he does on his own show.

And I thought Koz knew basketball.. Didn't he spend like 10+ years with the Rockets before coming to the Kings? But he did go off on some weird topics a bunch of times.

EDIT: NM he spent about 10 years total in basketball before coming to the Kings. Only a couple seasons with the Rockets but also had experience with the Warriors and the 76ers for about 10 years prior to coming to the kings.

lol koz was terrible. i remember when he did a show on wrestling at arco. omfg, i had to shut off the radio. who the hell wants to hear about fake sports.

while some don't like grant.. i don't always agree with what he has to say but he keeps things on topic. there was one caller a few weeks ago asking grant if the kings should worry about the playoffs lmao. hello caller, we have to worry about winning at least a game or two.

I sincerely hope you're not conflating "used to" with "likes." Because I did grow up in the east and, to whatever extent I'm "used to" radio talk show hosts like Napear, I don't like them at all. As to his popularity, I have to echo steelvt in asking, what's his competition? Here in Hampton Roads, there's some local meatball who is praised as having the "Number One local sports radio program in Hampton Roads for thirty years," but what is unspoken in that claim is that he has the only local sports radio program in Hampton Roads, at least for the twelve years I've been living here.

I'm also amazed that people call him a coward. A coward wouldn't call out a player and then have the brass one's to get on a plane with the same player. Sorry mi amigo, that takes guts.
That doesn't take any guts at all. Every person working in corporate America knows at least one guy like that: a guy who appears to enjoy being a professional *******, and pushing the buttons of people that he knows won't do anything in retaliation, because they're not going to risk their job on reprisal. Napear knows perfectly well that there's nothing a player can do to him that won't get them suspended without pay so, not only no, but hell no that doesn't take guts.

As I've said before. I like Grants show because I can always be sure of one thing. He's going to talk about sports and not the musical he went to at the, or the Academy awards show on television.
Eh, as I said in the NBA forum, one man's ceiling is another man's floor. I personally loathe those "All sports, all the time" shows, and their meatball hosts, but that probably has to do with the fact that I'm not actually a "sports fan," going by most reasonable definitions of the term. Basically, aside from basketball, I could give a rat's *** about sports in general; I hate hardcore sports shows almost as much as I hate the gd lakers. That's why my all-time favorite sports media personality is Tony Kornheiser, precisely because he's not a heavy-duty sports guy. That, and the fact that he spends a significant portion of many of his shows derisively mocking "Hardcore Sports Guy."
