Courtney Lee

so let me get this straight. New Jersey cleared all this cap space and aren't going to get any top notch free agents. HAHA nah

reminds me of what happened to Chicago with a similar strategy a decade ago after Jordan left -- ended up wasting money on ron Mercer to try to save face. Winning 12 games/being the worst team in the league is just a terrible way to try to recruit free agents.

1. I said "similar", I didn't say they are the "same" player. And I have qualified what I meant: both good defenders but Williams is a better playmaker than Lee.

2. If you just remember the T-Will and Lee from college days, I can understand why you have the impression that you have. I'm going by the most recent version of the players. You said Lee's strength is shooting, not true, not anymore. Lee bricked so many shots in NJ that fans put up pages like this: http://netsarescorching.com/2009/12/21/is-courtneys-lower-body-the-reason-for-his-slump/ As for Williams, his jumpers had improved a lot by the end of the season. Judging by Lee's struggles last season and comparing it to William's improvement, the gap has been closed. Lee is still the better shooter for sure but if Williams keep his pace he will catch up soon enough.

I present to you what is said about Williams by NBA people:

But hey, what do those guys know, right?

As for the claim that Williams wasn't very good:

If Courtney Lee has ever averaged 14/6/5 in any 17 game stretch, I'd like to know about it; because it has never happened.

Is there any reason the 17 game stretch where he was solid is more important than the 15 game stretch where he was wretched? Is 14/6/5proof of all-star potential anyways? He won't be an all-star...but he could be a nice player. If he learns to shoot. Otherwise, the defense, the passing, its not useless, but it gets lost on a guy the other team doesn't have to guard.

Now Courtney Lee has shot 37% over two seasons. Not 17 games, two full seasons in the league. He was a great shooter in college. If I had to bet, he will always be a better shooter than T-Will. He can do two things defend, and shoot, and that's why he'll start with LeBron...or with T-Will at the 3.

The 17 game stretch is after a long period of rookie wall where he was benched, struggled, tweeted he'd rather be somewhere else, and a talk with the coach that finally the light came on. It's where he "turned a corner" and became a different player. The point is not his stats but that he was likely the Nets' best player during that stretch. Better than Lopez, Harris, and ahem, Lee.

I'm not going to debate with you about Williams' all star potential because I don't have to. When Trenton Hassell, David West and Kiki Vandeweghe agree with me, I like my chances.

From my understanding, the Nets is trying to upgrade the wing position, find someone better than Lee to pair with Williams and Harris. I think Lee may start but only if the Nets fail to sign anyone significant and couldn't trade him away.

Those quotes mean zero to me, and only Hassell mentioned All-Star potential.

The Nets signed Outlaw...which would actually make T-Will the better fit to start.

I didn't think they would, but the point is that T-Will as a potential all-star is not an outrageous claim. Kik didn't say All-Star specifically but he did say his ceiling is unlimited. All I'm saying this that 1) people within the NBA thinks he can be an elite player. Will he? I don't know but the talent is there. 2) When I saw him played I thought the same thing: namely wow, his guy can be really, really good. 3) Williams is a big part of the Nets' future. Whether he starts or not, he's going to get starter mins, while Lee is mostly an afterthought.

Not a bad signing. For now, Harris, Williams, Outlaw, Favors, and Lopez looks like a nice starting lineup on paper, albeit one that needs some time; we'll if who else they sign. They really need to shore up that bench, in particular get at least one competent big man.
