Corbin to Join Staff as Lead Assistant

Wasnt he viewed as a joke in Utah?

have to wait for npliam to come by to get the inside dirt.

But failed head coaches are common lead assistants. Indeed, as head coach I am not sure you'd want a non-failed head coach there.

He did serve under Sloan for 7 years and has some head coaching experience. He may not have done great as a head coach but that doesn't mean he wont do well as lead assistant.

I actually really like this pickup. His record in Utah might not be the best but in 2011 and 2012 the jazz had an above .500 roster with Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, and a young Gordon Hayward as the big three. I mean those are fine players but putting up .500+ in the western conference is no easy task. Even last season I felt like the Jazz always played hard.

I like this move. I think his experience under Sloan will be helpful for a young head coach like malone.

I still remember Tyrone as King back in the day. I don't remember anything he did, but I do remember screaming his name after a game at Arco trying to get an autograph

Don't know too much about him other than he was under the tutelage of Sloan for a few years. This move can't hurt so I it's a lateral move at best.

I thought Chris Jent was team lead assistant since Brendan Malone left. I know Jent is head coach for Kings summer league but guess now demoted as lead assistant for regular season.

Corbin played 16 years in the league, was an assistant under Sloan for 7 years and a head coach for 4.

He will be a benefit.

Most importantly he'll bring over experience with the disciplined offense that Jerry Sloan always ran. If Vivek and co really want to get closer to the Spurs they could do a lot worse than bringing in a Sloan disciple. After all, the precision of the Stockton/Malone Jazz teams were the blueprint for Popovich and San Antonio in many ways.

Jent became the lead assistant when Papa Malone left but I think they wanted some one else and didn't have a good opportunity to hire anyone at that time of the year. This ownership group is pretty serious, aren't they?

Agreed. I think also in back of ownership mind is this. If Michael Malone can't turn it around (as in at least better than 28 wins again) Corbin is insurance of sorts to take over as credible head coach in Kings complete collapse. Maybe Larry Brown's phone number should be on Kings FO speed dial as well - eek! Good luck to Head Coach Malone this upcoming season so such thoughts remain mostly just that, passing thoughts.

I think Vivek is still pretty much in full support of Malone. As of now I don't think the bloom is off the rose for either D'Allesandro or Malone. But if this season is a disaster I'd honestly think PDA would have a hotter seat than the coach.

You do realize that Malone made the hire, right? He's not digging his own grave.

I don't think that was being suggested. Malone is in charge and I doubt is digging his own grave. I am guessing herre but I think Corbin might not be an inspirational leader and Malone will always be that. I hope Corbin is somewhat of an offensive guru. I like Mike Malone very much but maybe he has a hole in his knowledge of offense.

Corbin was a super gentleman when playing for the Kings and this is further proof that the "culture" of the team is shifting.

Wasn't it said that in Golden State Jackson was the emotional leader and Malone was the X's & O's guy? I think Malone has a deep knowledge of offense, it just never hurts to bring in another set of experienced eyes

I think I would have been looking at Adelman's old assistants and Pop's old assistants for some imaginative offensive juice.

I think I would have been looking at Adelman's old assistants and Pop's old assistants for some imaginative offensive juice.

The problem with that is there really aren't a lot of Pop's old assistants floating around. His core staff has mostly remained intact (Budenholzer was with him for 18 years before taking the Hawks job) and he seems to have spawned more GMs (Danny Ferry, Sam Presti, Dell Demps etc) than coaches. And many of the guys who have gone on to coach haven't been all that successful (Avery Johnson, Mike Brown etc). I think Popovich is a tremendous coach but a lot of his success was having a superstar in Duncan that allowed that in your face coaching style. The same style that wore thin for Avery Johnson and ultimately led to his dismissal.

As for Adelman, I don't know which assistant I would go after. I can't think of any that had Adelman's gift for squeezing the most out of his roster, especially on the offensive end. I believe Rick is still a consultant for the Wolves but I'd love to have him in that same function with the Kings. Let him play the Coachie role and help with the offense but not travel with the team so that he can spend the tim with his family.

That said, Adelman's offenses weren't technical masterpieces. Which is to say he wasn't Fratello micromanaging the game from the sideline with scripted plays. No, they were simply read and react motion offenses that relied on having multifaceted players who could all shoot, pass and handle. The Kings players during the halcyon days talked about how they spent the majority of practices cutting, screening, passing and shooting.

It's one reason I could possibly see a trade for Josh Smith working. He can handle and pass and is a decent shooter (who often shoots too many low percentage shots unfortunately) and it would give the Kings a starting five (assuming Stauskas and not McLemore) who can all handle, pass and shoot. If JT were retained as the third big for dealing with full size front courts (Memphis, LAC, probably LAL if they resign Gasol and keep Randle etc) then that team would have a chance of being closer to Malone/PDA's vision of a team that shares the ball and shoots well.

There was a certain faction of the fan base that thought he was holding back the young guys in the first couple of years he was the coach. Last year he played the young guys with the understanding that this would be a rebuilding year and that didn't go so well. Some of that may have been his fault ut I think most of it was that we didn't have a starting or even backup caliber point guard until Tre Burke returned from his injury and even at that he was a rookie. I also think that it is just too hard to win in the NBA, especially in the west with young players.
I heard lots and lots of complaining about the coach but really I thought he did an admirable job. He made good adjustments, kept his players motivated and carried himself with dignity and respect.

I would love to have him on my teams coaching staff. I think it was a good hire.

Sounds like a move to improve on the offensive end, with Malone being more focused on the defensive end.

Kenny Natt was also a long time assitant under Sloan

Not that Cobin is that bad. I think its a solid signing but then again quite a few ex NBA coaches around who could fill that role!

I'm not a fan of Smith. I agree that in theory his multi-faceted skills would be an excellent fit in the type of offense you describe, but he's the prototypical underachiever and a guy who has consistently been inconsistent. He's also a guy who doesn't seem to know that he's not a 3. I also don't like mixing his mentallity with that of Cousins'.
