Veteran Christie may not return
By ART GARCIA
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

DALLAS – Doug Christie’s run with the Mavericks could be coming to an end in the next few days.
Christie left the team last week to get a second opinion on a sore left ankle in Seattle. Mavs owner Mark Cuban acknowledged Tuesday night that Christie may elect not to return.

"His doctors say the ankle is OK, but not perfect," Cuban said before the game against Houston. "Doug is deciding what he wants to do."

Retirement is an option. Cuban expects a decision before the end of the week.

Christie signed a three-year contract with the Mavs during the off-season, but only the first season at $3.15 million was guaranteed. The Mavs could also be discussing a settlement with the veteran guard.

Christie has been slowed by the ankle since the start of the season. He started the first seven games, averaging 3.7 points and 2.0 assists in 26.4 minutes. He’s been on the inactive list for the last three games, including Tuesday night against the Rockets.

With Christie gone and Jerry Stackhouse (sore knee) sidelined, the Mavs are thin at the shooting guard and small forward spots. The team will look to fill Christie’s spot on the roster if he doesn’t come back.

As of now, the Mavs are working under that contingency.

"We’ve just got to move forward," coach Avery Johnson said. "That’s all. We’re in a situation right now where we have to move forward until we figure out that situation."

Well, if so, Doug gave it a shot at least. I honestly didn't think Doug would last in that starting spot with his age and foot conditions. Which I was quite surprised about (starting).

Frankly I think doug pretty much retired last January. You can tell his heart has not been remotely in it since that time, and any setback at all starts up the official retirment talk again. Nto something that happens with somebody who is serious about continuing his career.

yeah, I think Christie's heart was broken & his desire to play died with the trade. And, honestly, he had been playing through pain for some time because of his passion to win and his loyalty to the team. When that vanished... well...:( It's always sad for me to see how few careers actually end gracefully.

I'll never forget the phone interview when Jackie had to talk instead of him, because he was in tears that he was leaving Sac.

I want him back as aa asst. coach too, but my guess would be he will end up in Seattle.

One thing is for sure I want him to be our next assistant coach.

I think he might make a solid one, but I have to ask -- would we then have an assistant coach in a suit constantly raising his hand up every few seconds while staring at the floor? That would be...odd. Better than your head coahc doing it though. :)

Ah, but it might have advantages. He could send secret messages to the team under the guise of them being the usual message to Jackie.

;)

i fell out of my chair when i read that.... hilarious.... i could just picture him doing that during timeouts just out of no where.....:D

That's just too bad cause minus his foot problems he still has a a few good years left in him. It would be nice to have him mentor our young wings but I'm not so sure he'd be so interested.. a guy like him would probably just die to watch instead of playing.

DALLAS -- The Mavericks explained the signing of Doug Christie as low risk with the potential for a high reward.
Well, so much for the reward. Christie's career with the Mavs has all but come to an end after playing in seven games because of lingering ankle problems.
The team doesn't expect him back, and his retirement could be forthcoming. The Mavs are awaiting word from Christie's agent on the veteran guard's plans.
Assuming Christie won't return, how do the Mavs plan to fill the roster spot?
That's the next item of debate for the brain trust of owner Mark Cuban, coach Avery Johnson and president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson.
They won't be shopping for a starter. Marquis Daniels has taken Christie's spot on the first team, and the Mavs appear better for it.
Daniels has averaged 12 points and 4.7 assists in the last three games, compared with Christie's season averages of 3.7 points and 2.0 assists. And Daniels, 24, is 11 years younger than Christie.
Searching for a backup shooting guard at the NBA minimum salary -- the Mavs don't have any salary exceptions and Christie's retirement won't free up any extra money -- could take the team in several different directions.
While the pool of unsigned free agents isn't swimming with talent, there are some intriguing names out there, such as Wesley Person, Casey Jacobsen, Rodney White and Glenn Robinson.
For those interested in Latrell Sprewell, both Cuban and Johnson have shot that suggestion down.
The Mavs must decide on their priority for a player that, at best, is the ninth or 10th man in the rotation. Is it 3-point shooting, defense or ability to play significant minutes in case of an injury?
What's certain, Johnson will have to feel comfortable with the choice when he looks down at the end of the bench.

Well, I bet they'd get Lynch or Adrian Griffin. Forgot about Jacobsen out there, he's a really good shooter.

I hope Doug can stay in the business as a coach or something, he'd be a great one with his skills.
