Chris Wilcox

A name that has not been mentioned lately is Chris Wilcox from Seattle... he is young and athletic, 6'10" 245lbs... he has the potential to be a 18pts, 10 reb power forward in the league... he is stuck in contract limbo with the sonics... he wants 6 years at 50 mil+, while the sonics are offering closer to 6yrs/40mil...

since the sonics owner is looking to sell the team soon, he probably doesn't want to be locked into a monster contract... in steps petrie, and offers SAR and maybe Garcia or Monia for a resigned Chris Wilcox...

the kings get their young and athletic power forward, at about 6 years/ 50mil (8.33mil/year)... the sonics get a reliable power forward with a fair contract and a swingman with potential... i would much rather give up monia, than garcia, but it may take garcia for the sonics to swing the S&T...

the kings will have a line up of....

PF: Wilcox / KT / Taj Gray
SF: Artest / Monia or Garcia/ Williamson
C: Miller / Potopenko / Justin Williams
SG: Wells / Martin / Price
PG: Bibby/ Douby / Hart

I would rather offer KT instead of Reef. We don't need his attitude on the team.

i would too, but if the sonics were going to give a bigger contract to a player, why would they not just give it too Wilcox... SAR contract is much more desirable for another team in a trade than KT's...

KT contract will be very hard to move, and will only be moved in a trade, where the kings take on an even worse contract....

Eh..that guy's just such a risk.

It could work out great. But basically we're talking about a guy getting a $50mil contract based on a 30 game stint at the end of the year for a losing squad in which he went 14pts 8rebs. Not much of a defender either + woudln't solve our issues there.

Now obviously if he can keep that production up + grow into that 18 and 10 guy in 36-38 min or whatever, the $50 mil is all good. But damn, that has the potential to be a BAD contract if that was just a contract push.

I like Wilcox - good rebounder, athletic, solid shot blocker. But, what I don't know is, how is his post-game? Mainly defensively. Since offensively we already have post-players.

I don't think we'd give up SAR for Wilcox... would likely have to be KT.

Not sure we could get him for the MLE, since the Sonics could just match that. And last I heard, are already far apart on cotract talks, so they may of offered not a lot. Ultimately, I don't think we really go after him or anything.

edit: I see from Brick, that he isn't a post-defender...

Although a better post defender than he is help defender I think.

There are others who have probably watched him more than I have though -- Clippers of years past and Sonics of this year have hardly been must see TV.

He's decent...I wouldn't give up Reef for him, but he's an upgrade in size compared to KT. KT is a better scorer/runner but with Miller at C we need size...don't throw in Garcia though.

I think Wilcox is probably one of our last hopes out there if we're looking for a difference maker in free agency. But the whole restricted free agency thing is a mess. Who knows?

I guess Seattle is now looking at S&T opportunities for Wilcox. My initial impression was very similar to Brick's -- 30 game contract push, bad attitude, not much of a shotblocker or defender. But looking back at his stats, he's actually put up very solid numbers the last couple of years. He just hasn't gotten much time. He's got good size and athleticism, and he's just 23. If the price is right...

If the rumoured $10 million per year is true then I say pass. He still doesn't address our needs though.

Well considering Nene got $60 mil for averaging 10 pts, 6 reb, and less than 1 block per game AND is coming off an injury, it is going to be hard to get a young big like Wilcox without throwing an awful lot of money at him.

Still, he may be one of our only realistic options for a young athletic big other than trading for someone who may expendable on another team (Haywood, Etan T., Wright) or hoping that one of our summer league guys develops extremely rapidly.

Wright is an FA. You're also forgetting Magloire, even if he's more difficult to get.

Thing is, Wilcox isn't good in the post defensively. Wright/Magloire/Etan are plus more. Never heard Haywood suggested much, he's not that good anyways. I haven't seen too much of Wilcox, but from what I've gathered on him during the last summer and season... not sure he really fits what we want other than rebounding and athleticism. Plus the Sonics want an all-star foward for him, not another wing player when they have Geleable from France coming over this year. And Wilcox would likely cost a lot.

The rumor is that the offer is less than the 6 year, 42 million that was suspected to be offered, I would hope he could be had for around 5 years, 40 million. If this is the case you might take the risk and hope he turns out.

Maybe this could get it done

Most people figure that we would have to package KT with a young guy to send him away, and most have all but given up on Hart, and don't want to lose the young guys we have, so we throw in next years pick and move KT for a younger, taller replacement who rebounded very well for Seattle and has potential to grow, he played very well in the half season he wasn't stuck behind Elton Brand.

Rockets get a backup point and an improvement over Howard who can defend quicker frontcourt players and will be a good roleplayer with the guys they have. Both KT and Hart are Van Gundy type of guys and should play well under him.

Seattle gets howard who will give them a veteran presence in a very young frontcourt who won't play big minutes but can make a solid contribution while allowing the young guys to play and develop. They do this mostly for two first rounders though, which will give them the option of drafting three first rounders next year if they decide to continue the youth movement. They could package them to move up and draft someone they really like, or package one or all of them with Rashard Lewis and make a run at someone like Pierce.

He's a solid player. I've never really been that impressed with him but I do like his size and his ability to finish in the paint. If his head is on straight, he's better than Abdur-Rahim and Kenny.

No way I give up the R1 pick for Chris Wilcox... come on now. Petrie doesn't either.

Er...?

The problem with Wilcox is the $$ he demands. But assuming we manage to at least hold our own next year, Chris Wilcox is a better player than just about anybody you are going to draft at #20 or whatever. We shouldn't be talking lottery pick here (and could lottery protct it just to be safe).

In any case, as we saw again this year, 6'10" athletic forward centers just don't last in the draft.
