Chris "Birdman" Anderson amnestied. Sign him?

Well, I don't imagine his lawyer would come out and try to use the Allen Iverson defense ("Kiddie porn? We talking 'bout kiddie porn?!? Kiddie porn? C'mon man, Kiddie porn? Seriously? Kiddie porn.") so I suppose it's probably prudent to wait for the whole thing to play out.

Sounds like the perfect role model...

Any news about whatever happened to the criminal investigation on this guy? Was there a charge filed already?

6' 10", shot-blocker, seldom operates with the ball in his hands, and can be had for peanuts. I think he would almost fit the team perfectly for now. I like him more for the Kings rather than Petrie getting a Mikki Moore or a Sean May to fill in the need.

How long is his remaining contract?

I have mixed emotions about Anderson. He just turned 34 yr's old, and his minutes have been declining slightly. Add in that he's become much more injury prone the last few years. Understandable considering the abuse his body takes in the role he plays. So he's probably suffered some loss of athleticism. However, last season, when he did play, he did average good shotblocking numbers per 36 minutes. We do have a roster spot open. The question is, do we want to use it on Anderson now, or wait and see who else might be available. Such as the Jimmer for Sanders or Udoh trade, where you might get a young and upcoming player capable of the same thing.

Its not as though Petrie hasn't taken flyers on players with checkered pasts before. Even Webber's reputation had been tainted quite a bit before we aquired him. There was Ron Artest. And who could forget Mad Max. But I doubt any such move would be done until Andersons problems are resolved. After that, who knows?

I would pass on the "Bird". He was suspended two years for drug use. Now he is under investigation again.

The Nuggets dumped him for a reason. Let another team give him his third chance.

That's how you win more games? A cheap shot blocker? No, thanks, I'll pass on Anderson.

I am on the fence about picking up a freak like that (and leaning against), but I will say this, he is the one shotblocker out there within our price range (i.e. free) who's been a major part of winning teams, played alongside a strong center, in a running/smallballish system, and really hasn't lost much of whatever effectiveness he once had (per minute numbers are still steady). For a guy his age he has relatively little wear and tear on his legs. With the early drug suspension, coming into the legaue late, some injuries, and backup work, he has far fewer games and minutes played than a guy like Dwight Howard for instance. I never thought he was that horribly effetive, never could be THE anchor. But he has the experience and skillset he could add a little height/intimidation off the bench and maybe afew wins over the course of the season. For free, that is about all you could reasonably expect to acquire.

I obviously don't think any NBA team can pick him up until the icky charges are resolved, but as they were reported its not what the headlines have made it out to be. Anderson's lawyer's story is that a female fan of his and he starting flirting online, she sent him some compromising pictures, and then when he turned her away she tried to blackmail him because turns out she was underage (a detail she had apparently omitted). Of course that's his side of the story, but notably it hasn't been contradicted by anyone inside or outside of law enforcement, and no charges have been filed, leading me to believe that may the general gist. Quite a long way from kiddie porn.

As a role-playing defensive BIG - YES, Anderson would certainly help.

We badly need at least another BIG, preferrably a role-playing defensive big. And we all know signing an expensive one is next to impossible for now.

Who else is available that we can sign for cheap (that our broke owners can afford) besides The Birdman?

You want Petrie to sign a Sean May or a Mikki Moore type of BIG?

Armstrong, Darnel Jackson, Greene?

You think those kind of characters can help us win more games?

You want those kind of players?

I guess the right question to ask is who else is cheap out there (and who is available for signing) and who is better than the Birdman.

Im on board with bringing in the birdman. Those are the type of players we've ALWAYS signed. The birdman would fill a specific need.
