what should the kings do at #4 if rubio is available Rubio or Evans
Chad Ford

Take Rubio ... I'm absolutely amazed at all of the venom coming out of Sacramento on Rubio. I think Evans and Jonny Flynn are really good players too. But they don't have the upside of Rubio. If you want Evans or Flynn because they can contibute now ... that's fine. But just say it. Don't kill Rubio and everyone who thinks he's good in the process. It's been really weird to see that ...

I heard the Kings' Jerry Reynolds called you a "tool" on Kings radio after you went on the air and said the Kings should draft Rubio
Chad Ford

Yeah, I heard that too. Hey if you're going to be insulted about being a poor judge of talent, at least get insulted by the Director of Player Personnel for the WORST team in the league.

I'll update this first post if he mentions anything else about the kings.

Reynolds called Ford "a tool for agents" in the same way White House correspondents were accused of being "tools for the executive branch"

But hey, way to defend your journalistic credibility by building a straw man and then resorting to school yard bully "I know you are but what am I" insults.

I rarely agree with Reynolds (as I consider him a tool for the Maloofs) but he has a point here.

Weak comeback from Chad Ford.

Round 1: Jason Thompson (12)

Round 2: Sean Singletary (42), Patrick Ewing Jr. (43)

Analysis: A team should not be criticized just for doing the unexpected. But the Kings made a huge reach for Thompson at No. 12. He's going to be a solid rotation player at best. But it looks like he might be the Shelden Williams of this draft. With solid players like Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur and Mario Chalmers and upside guys like Anthony Randolph and Marreese Speights on the board, I think the Kings blew it.

Petrie (and therefore the Kings) have a MUCH better track record in evaluating talent in the draft than Ford.

And as others have mentioned, the assertion was that Ford was used by agents to get information out there - something he didn't bother addressing. It had nothing to do with who Ford thought the Kings should draft or his talent evaluating abilities (which I DO think are poor anyway) but the notion that he is often used by agents and GMs to push their agenda out via a major media outlet like ESPN.

Before this, I just thought Ford was wrong on Thompson. Now I think he's poison, saying stuff like, "don't kill Rubio"? I haven't heard anybody "killing" Rubio. Then he comes with a strawman so he doesn't have to answer the question about him being a tool for agents. The guy is bad news...

The Maloofs sign Reynolds paychecks. In that sense all their employees are "tools." They do their work in a manner acceptable to their boss.

A media member being paid by the party he is expected to report on has an inherent conflict of interest. The other MSE employees do not have the same responsibilities.

Jerry's point is right on though. Ford has no idea how to judge talent. He offers up thoughts based on a weak evaluation thought process. He also falls for every agent that tells him something. He is in a very real sense, a tool for those agents.

Exactly. People seem to be missing that point. They are misquoting Jerry very badly.

He WASN'T calling Ford a tool. I wish people would read the entire quote before jumping off the ledge...

I didn't hear it like that. I clearly heard Jerry say "That came from a tool like Chad Ford." He then went on to say "Chad Ford is a tool for agents."

This coming from the biggest TOOL in the history of the NBA himself. Why do the Maloofs still pay this guy?

He does wear two hats. Director of player personal, and color commentator on television. He didn't make these comments during a Kings game. He made them in an interview as the director of player personal. Personally I don't have a problem with it. I'm one of those that finds Reynolds amusing. He's also a lot more knowledgeable than some would give him credit for.

Jerry reminds me of a story about a so called city slicker that accidently printed a bunch of 7 dollar bills. So he went down to Mississippi to unload them on some dumb country hick. He went into a general store pulled out a bill and asked the clerk if he could make change for a seven. The clerk looked at him for a second and then smiled and said. Hey no problem. How about a four and a three.:)

Funny story :)

Reynolds is not a media member being paid to report on the Kings. He's Director of Player Personnel and a color commentator for games. Neither one of those involves journalistic reporting.
