Casspi is our glue. I want him with us, even if it means using a smidge more of the available cap
The difficulty right now is basically:
we have 5 guards, now I suppose its remotely possible we trade Ben or DC for a better, fit, but right now we have let's say "committments" to:
PG - Rondo
PG (and now soem SG) - Collison
SG - Belinelli
SG (and maybe a little SF) - Mclemore
SG - Anderson
we have 1 SF
SF/PF - Gay
we have 3 bigs:
C - Koufos
C/PF - Cousins
PF/C - Cauley Stein
I would go so far as to say subtract Anderson and 8 of those 9 are our rotation players.
Now, what that leaves open is roughly
Positionally:
1 deep bench PG
1 backup SF
2 backup bigs, 1 of whom should be true PF or stretch PF (could be part of rotation)
Roles:
we could really use an extra shooter still
perimeter defender
stretchy type PF
Candidates:
McCallum - PG/SG or Miller - PG
Evans - PF or Moreland - PF (neither stretchy)
Smith - PF (stretchy) or...Bargs??
Omri - SF/PF, or possibly Barnes or Wright
you take all that, and the problem is that I like Omri as well as anybody still out there for the backup SF role. he proved he could handle it, and critically for me, proved that if Rudy could go down, Omri is capable of putting up significant numbers in Karl's system to hold down the fort until Rudy gets back. And not everybody could do that. you get Barnes or Wright or somebody and lose Rudy, you end up subbing in an entirely different sort of non-prolific player and it changes your whole team dynamic. I also like Omri for team chemistry.
BUT, if Omri is the backup SF and possible last rotation guy, then we don't have a perimeter 2/3 type defender possibly even on the roster, let alone the rotation. If Omri is the backup SF and possible last rotation guy, then all of our real shooters come at one position (SG). That makes them hard to deploy in sufficient numbers.
I like Omri for the spot...but if that's the move there will be other roles I think that just aren't going to be filled. And maybe that's ok this year. We're trying to get tough and competitive, not perfect all at once.
