I tried it and wasn't grabbed, but I'm willing to give it another shot. I was hooked on BSG from the start though. Maybe I was just in the wrong frame of mind.
I think going in blind might actually have been a plus for me. I found it on Syfy, Dextered it and then watched both of the first two episodes back-to-back. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I'm having a lot of fun picking up on some of the early clues that will inevitably lead to the "rag tag band" etc, etc, etc.
Have they aired more than 2 episodes yet? I'm kind of hoping I can watch about 4 at once.
I saw this promoted and was thinking of watching it. My problem is I never watched BSG. Will I be totally lost? Are there too many "clues" and "inside jokes" that I'll have no idea about that will take away from what I get out of this show?
They've aired a 2-hour pilot (which was also available early on DVD) and two episodes from season one thus far.
I think if you watch the pilot you won't be totally lost. It's hard to say, having come from watching BSG, but I get the impression it's going to stand on its own for the most part.
You're right in thinking that there are going to be references that will be meaningful as backstory - one of the main characters from BSG is a child in Caprica, several motifs from BSG are being explained, etc. But I don't think that's the focus of the show. BSG painted the 50 years or so leading up to its own opening in very broad historical brushstrokes. Caprica is going to fill in the details on how that history started/played out. I think it's got a chance to be interesting to non-BSG watchers because there's some good depth to the storyline.
I agree. I've already got my neighbor hooked and he didn't follow BSG either. This, like some of the other really good shows on right now, is going to depend solely upon the writing to keep it going. I'm sure those of us who watched BSG and now are watching Caprica would be able to answer questions or point out some of the "inside" stuff to new viewers.
OK, so here are my first questions... Where/when is this supposed to be taking place? Is it the future and/or some distant more advanced civilization? They talk about 12 worlds, I'm assuming that's 12 different planets where people live? Is earth one of the 12?

One of the themes of the BSG series was that everything is cyclical, so without giving away too much else just consider it a distant civilization.
It takes place in a distant solar system (or systems?...that's never really well defined). None of them are intended to be Earth, though the connection between our Earth and the BSG universe is explained in BSG proper. That connection won't really be relevant to Caprica. "Caprica", of course, is the name of the planet on which the series Caprica takes place - the other planets also take their names from signs of the zodiac. (Caprica ~= Capricorn, Tauron ~= Taurus, Gemenon ~= Gemini, etc.)
Not to my knowledge. The robots are important, though.
