Bryant Will Take Every Laker Shot, Jackson Announces
23rd January, 2006 - 3:26 am

By Graham Flashner

In an unprecedented move that Phil Jackson hopes will get his L.A. Lakers into the playoffs, the team has announced that Kobe Bryant will be taking every shot of every game, as long as he’s on the floor, for the remainder of the season. The new scheme, dubbed the “Bryangle” offense, comes on the heels of Bryant’s 81-point explosion against Toronto. It will mean that no Laker will be allowed to shoot except under special circumstances. It also means that Bryant, who’s averaging better than 36 points per game, will certainly win the NBA’s scoring title.

Though the controversial decision seemed sure to cause resentment among teammates, Jackson didn’t seem concerned. “It’s fairly obvious we’ve been… moving towards this kind of situation for a long time,” he said. “We had to ask, who else would be want taking shots at the end of a game… or in the last five minutes of a game… or midway through the third quarter…or, getting us off to a quick start in the first quarter.”

Said Bryant: “I want the ball every time. I feel I can score on anyone, any time, any place, from anywhere on the court. If my teammates would just set screens, run interference, and stay out of my way, there’s no telling what I could do. If I’d had 60 shots against Toronto, I would’ve easily broke 100. I don’t think 120 is out of the question, if I got half the foul calls I should be getting.”

While Bryant’s teammates didn’t seem thrilled with the move, they were careful in their comments. “They don’t pay me to score,” said center Chris Mihm, who tallied 12 points to complement Bryant’s 81. But Lamar Odom, averaging nearly 15 points a game, was clearly upset. “Does this mean that I’m the only one allowed to rebound?” he asked with a raised eyebrow. “Is Smush Parker gonna be the only guy allowed to get assists?

Then he sighed, turning philosophical. “Maybe it’s for the best. It’s getting to the point where I feel guilty any time I take a shot. And if I miss, I can feel Kobe glaring at me, like, how dare I take that shot?

Added Devean George: “Look at this way. If Kobe’s shooting 80-90 times a game, and we lose, at least he won’t be able to blame us for missing the big shots.”

There will be exceptions . The conditions in which another Laker besides Bryant is allowed to shoot are as follows:

- If Bryant is on the bench.

- If Bryant misses a free throw, and a teammate in the lane has an opportunity for a tip-in.

- If Bryant is double-teamed and passes the ball to a teammate no further than three feet from the basket.

- If a teammate has the ball with less than 2 seconds to go in the first, second, or third quarter and can’t pass it to Bryant without time expiring. (Only Bryant will be allowed to have the ball in his hands in the last ten seconds of the fourth quarter).

Otherwise, look for Bryant to be shooting on every Laker possession. “I’m real excited,” Bryant confided. “It’s what I’ve always dreamed.”

The preceding article is satirical fiction.

I'm thinking this one might not be cast in stone.

I can't help but remember the one game when Violet Palmer was officiating and called Vlade for a foul. In and of itself it was probably not that unusual; the fact Vlade was sitting on the bench at the time was hilarious...

;)

They should just stick ball boys on the floor to give him the ball. That's pretty much what the rest of the team has been relegated to anyway. Think of how cost effective that would be.

ROFLMAO - That is too funny!

I was starting to think the Triangle Offense looked more like a dot. Then again, didn't realize they had a name for it, Bryangle Offense. ROFL, this is too funny. Thanks for the post. But I won't be suprise if this actually happens.

Am I the only one that thinks Phil Jackson is playing with everyone, especially Kobe Bryant. I think Jackson is trying to make a point. I also think someone will eventually hurt Kobe, one way or another. This is just too arrogant to stand. What a friging circus.

If you were an NBA player, with whom would you rather play? Kobe or Iverson?

iverson of course

he is clutch ... both are (and i dont blame them for taking over the 4th quarter)

but kobe wants to take over the whole 4 quarters

AI passes the ball way more than kobe ...

even though he is da one man show ... he does pass and look for open man ... kobe just shoots :P

Its interesting that you say that a guy who is taking 27.7 shots per game shoots way more than a guy who is taking 26 shots pers game.

Iverson is clutch LOL - ROFL

I saw Iguadola taking that off balance heave to win the game a couple of days ago and I have seen many a times where Kobe has hit big last minute FGs to win. I havent seen that many Iverson shots to win the game, he disappears with the game on line. However Iverson did have some clutch moments under Larry Brown more because Larry's philosophy similar to what PJ is doing now is to let AI or Kobe drive and try to score and let others go for the offensive rebound / putback

See the increase in offensive rebounding for the lakers and that attributes Kobe shooting the ball a lot and drawing attention.

What is arrogant here, probably you dont like him and it comes across as arrogant. For me I dont hate him and I dont think its arrogance, its just amazing to see the kind of plays he makes and the ease with which he is able to score. He seems unstoppable in the wing with those double pump fakes and fallaways, something that I havent seen in a long time. Lots of other players who shoot from outside are coming of screens and dont really always have someone in their face.

i apologize ...

it just seems like Kobe plays alone over there

AI is a clutch player ... not necessarily at the last second but u kno ... pretty good 4th quarters

and he has webb, korver, andre who can all score ... and he passes them the ball ...

more passing than kobe

but ... kobe is more talented playa ...

Not neccesarily at the buzzer...but I have watched the Sixers a lot this year, and while I am no fan of Allen's, I must say that he has played pretty clutch in the 4th quarter. Kobe is obviously a better 4th quarter performer but when the gamr is on the line, as other pointed out, Iverson has let his teammates take last second shots (see Korver and Webber). Of course, there isn't neccesarily a corrolation between that and Kobe since Kobe has a far worst cast of teammates than Iverson.

true but who will Kobe pass too? They all are not what you would call the best roster in the league
