Nets Rescind Trade for Shareef Abdur-Rahim

East Rutherford, NJ (August 9, 2005)- The New Jersey Nets have rescinded their trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today. The Nets and Trail Blazers had agreed on a deal, pending a physical, that would have sent the nine-year veteran to the Nets in exchange for the Nets first round pick in 2006, lottery protected, and the team’s trade exception as a result of the Kerry Kittles trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2004. “We were anticipating adding Shareef to our roster,” said Thorn. “However, during the course of his normal physical examination, some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. After consulting with several noted specialists, we feel that rescinding the trade is our best course of action. We will now look in other directions for ways to improve our team for the upcoming season.”

Uh oh, the SAR haters here aren't going to like this news.

I think this is big enough Kings-related news (i.e. should we sign him??) that it went here.

Everything that happens in the NBA could be considered Kings-related if you wanted to play Six Degrees of Separation about it. ;)

The press release doesn't mention the Kings. This is no more about the Kings than Nick Van Exel being waived, at this point at least.

"SAR haters"

Sorry but I don't think he's important enough to have his own "haters."

;)

This is directly relevant to the Kings -- the Kings are one of only two teams he visited. The Kings don't have a Nick Van Exel sized hole at the point guard position. The Kings DO have a Shareef Abdur-Rahim sized hole at the PF position. And here's hoping they sign him up fast.

If Petrie signs SAR right away, I will be totally shocked, stunned AND disappointed.

Mr. Slim Circus=possible SAR hater
Nbrans=SAR lover

Nah, Slim reserves his "hate" for a select few. In fact, I can only think of one player who has completely earned that distinction...

You said "SAR haters" when I think the more accurate term would have been "people who are not and probably will not ever be totally convinced of SAR's Greatness." You could call us PWANAPWNEBTCOSARG"...

My guess is that you will see "Shareef heading to Sacramento" as the opening line on hoopshype.com tomorrow.

Petrie just wet his pants when he heard about the trade and was quickly on the phone to his agent.

Maybe it should be taken into consideration that SAR might actually have real health problems. NJ wanted him bad, and they wouldn't back down for nothing. If we do sign him, I will be very worried about his health.

Me too...it will be interesting to see how this plays out. NJ is either going to look really smart or really stupid...same goes for whoever ends up getting him. Risky, risky...

We will get SAR, trust me. It all makes since, that's why we signed Jamal today because Petrie went after SAR knowing that we will lose Darius to the Nets. The Nets said all along that if they didn't sign SAR, they would get Darius. So it all makes since now. SAR is a huge talent and an allstar in 2002.

Wow. This is very interesting indeed. What is the deal with his knee? I mean the 38 mil. didn't seem like that much, even if SAR has a possible knee problem. Its either serious, or the Nets just don't want to gamble.

But by not gambling, they ARE gambling with their fan base. This will backfire if Shareef goes somewhere else and plays well. Might be a good move for us, especially if he's going to have something to prove to NJ and the league.

If we aquire SAR we are back to elite status and we should be able to compete for the Western Conference Championship. ESPN was talking about the Nets being the 2nd best team in the East if they got him but they didnt so if we get him we should probably be considered one of the favorites out West.

Of course the irony of Shareef suffering a career ending knee injury while playing for the Kings makes that particular 'worst-case scenario' slightly less tragic. Well, someone had to say it.

All assuming that he remains healthy. Either the Nets have something else in mind, had cold feet and wanted to keep that 1st rounder, or SAR is a red alert health risk.

Hmmm...

For them to give up on SAR, who would have helped them greatly, has me confused as to what they saw and were told by doctors.

If Petrie gets him, I hope its for only half the MLE.

Actually, the Nets just shipped their trade exception to Philly for Marc Jackson and a 2nd round pick. They didn't waste any time.

Makes one wonder about the state of mind of Jason Kidd who openly lobbied for signing SAR and was unhappy about the makeup of the team last year. Now they're stuck with Kristic and Clff Robinson for the time being. Someone speculated that this may mean they go hard after Darius and I wouldn't doubt it given the rapidly dwindling list of PF FA's.

I was going to define "SAR Haters" as PWANAPWNEBTCOSARG, but it was too long. I will use the moniker "PWANAPWNEBTCOSARG" from now on.

I have to believe that two days ago when SAR came out and said "I don't want to be a Net" it was spurred on by the fact that GP was in the ear of SARs agent telling him we will welcome SAR to Sac-town with open arms should his deal fall through.

SAR could in effect tell the Nets confidently to take a hike knowing that his second choice was waiting in the wings. In fact I don't think he visited any other cities besides New Jersey or Sacramento, did he?

He has to be eager to put this bad experience behind him, so I guess he will want to sign a new contract ASAP. I expect SAR to have a new home by the end of the week.

As far as the health concerns, any athlete knows when you have a sprain, and ligaments tear, it never fully heals to regain the elasticity it once had. Calcium deposits (scar tissue) to the injured area occur and flexibility is not what it was. Thats just the reality of being an athlete. The fact he has never missed any games, and never had a knee operation (not even a scope let alone ACL reconstruction or microsurgery) is more significant in my mind than the possibility of arthritis. I think the real reason the Nets backed out was less the health concerns and more Shareef souring on playing for them.

Knowing the inflated ego of the professional athlete, SAR will want to use this experience to prove to the league that he is not "damaged goods", and will be out to have his best year ever. Lets hope it is in a Kings uniform.

SAR has not had any problems with his knee, like I said in an earlier post, I think Rod Thorn didnt want to give up their 2006 first round draft pick and he wanted it back. I also dont think he was that high on SAR b/c it was the coach and Jason kidd that really pushed to get SAR.

Wow I was just thinking after the signing of Jamal that we were ready to make a move on Darius, since i didnt think there were any real FA PF that were still avail. But with this development I could see us using the MLE to get SAR.

Maybe we will really use the new 14 man roster max to really field a DEEP team this year. Go ahead and get Matt Barnes for a min contract and just think of the depth:

PF: SAR, KThomas,Jamal
SF: Peja, Corliss, Barnes
C: Brad, Skinner, Jamal
SG: Bonzi,Kmartin,Garcia
PG: Bibby, Hart, Price

I LIKE IT!!!!!

Yeah, same here. Lots of flexibility to "mix-n-match" if injuries strike.
