Bobby Jackson - Surgery?

It was reported on Sporting News Radio that Bobby Jackson has ruled against surgery on his left wrist. That he is leaning towards a two month rest period. If that is the case, that is good news for the Sacramento Kings. I do not know how viable that is, I know you can't always believe what you read, hear or see.

I know this is a tough decision, and it's hard to criticize someone for choosing an option that requires no surgery and means less time out of the lineup. However, this is so risky. If it doesn't fully heal, and he re-injures it because he chose this route, then he'll need surgery anyway, and be out 5 months. This reminds me a lot of his coming back too early last year.

Hmm, is this good news, or bad? Seems like sugery would be the more definitive fix, although the recovery time would be a bit longer. Does a tear of the ligament really heal in 2 months? or are we just hoping?

Some athletes are not just down with surgery. We out in regular people's land think that athletes should just go under the knife get it fixed and go play. But I have heard Bobby say more than once that he hates surgery. And although I have never had any surgery, i can not be mad at that. I just think that with world class professional athletes, surgery is not easy.

yikes this is a risky move IMO. surgery would fix the problem, rest doesn't guarantee a full heal w/o surgery. also the chance of reagrivating it is higher

but it's not my body so who am i to judge his decision.

GET WELL SOON BOBBY!

As evenstar said, it's not my body so I guess I can't really judge his decision -- but I would have rather seen him go for the surgery option.

I agree with some of you guys that this is a risky move... but if Bobby choose this, then I'll go with it! :)

Speedy recovery, Bobby!!

I'm sure he's consulted his physicians, and if this is true I'm hoping it's a responsible decision. It would let him get in some game time before the playoffs which would obviously be great...

I'll trust in Bobby and his medical team. Personaly I think it is always wise to avoid surgery if possible. In the mean time the back up gaurd slot is in the aparently capible hands of Maurice the Beast. All is well, all will be well.

Some information:

Ligament injuries happen when they are stretched beyond their strength. All sprains are ligament injuries. These injuries range in severity from a slight stretch of the ligament fibers to a complete disruption of the ligament. We grade the injury on a I, II, III basis. A Grade I injury ranges from a stretch without a tear to about 20 percent tear of the ligament. A Grade II is a moderate tear, a 20 to 75 percent tear, and a Grade III sprain represents a 75 percent tear to a complete disruption of the ligament capsule.

Ligaments heal in a four step process:
  1. Blood flows into the ligament tear and the ligament itself swells up with blood and tissue fluids.
  2. A blood clot forms which is mechanically weak scar tissue.
  3. Gradually the scar tissue matures into strong scar tissue.
  4. The damaged nerve endings of the ligaments regenerate.
What is the healing time of these injuries? A Grade I tear heals in five to fourteen days. A Grade II tear heals in fourteen to thirty days. A Grade III heals in months, often taking as long as a fracture to heal.

Apparently Bobby's injury is a grade III, with the two month estimate, but not a complete tear, otherwise it wouldn't heal on its own. Given enough time he should recover fully, the key is "given enough time."

Hopefully he learned his lesson from the Minny game last year and won't try to rush back. We'll need him come May.

Bobby Jackson is Going to Have Surgery

Now Grant Napier is reporting that Bobby Jackson is going to have surgery, and that he will be out for a minumum of 12 weeks :( .

Probabyl for the better if he does. Two months with a chance it does not fully heal < three months wiht the problme absolutely fixed. I prefer the certainty. (from a professional athlete that is -- I chose against surgery myself when I tore ligaments in my elbow).

He's going to have surgery......then he's not going to have surgery......now, he is going to have surgery.

I worry that his shot will be affected... Or that he will land on it wrong and be gone for the season.
It is his off shooting hand/wrist but Bobby uses both hands to go to the hole anyway. Everybody send Bobby good vibes to heal up strong!

I think he should have his wrist dipped in that plastic stuff you use to cover/insulate hand tools. I'm sure he'd be just fine after that... This has to be just killing him inside. I hope he listens to the right people and gets the right advice for what's right for HIM, not just what would get him back playing soonest.

I think I'll wait for an announcement from Bobby or the Kings front office. Napear has been wrong about Bobby before.

;)

Okay: revised opinion. I guess Grant played a recording of Petrie saying Bobby IS going to have the replacement surgery and we'll be signing a replacement PG after Jan. 5...

Interesting? Yes? No? Maybe?

First, I would take it as an immense personal favor if you could PLEASE discontinue use of that particular phrase...

Am I serious about what? Revising my opinion? Grant playing a tape? Petrie saying he's going to sign a replacement PG?

It was just reported on channel 10 news here in Sacramento that Jackson has
seen two hand/wrist specialists in NY today. They (doctors) reported that the surgery is needed. Petrie stated that Bobby should be back in Sac later today. And hoped the operation would be done within a week hopefully here in Sacramento
