Board of Govs Meeting Updates-DAY 2

People can dump on the Maloofs all they want and the boys no doubt realize they're not the most popular bachelors in Sac as this point. But I bet they don't give a hoot and why should they? They've been fighting for a new arena all out since 2002 - having taken majority control of Kings franchise in 1998. Before the Maloofs, previous owner Jim Thomas tried to get the blittering idoits at City Hall to come up with a new arena plan, and way back in 1992 original owner Greg Lukenbill (who built both Arco 1 and Arco 2 totally on his own) was talking about need for a new arena development plan since what he had built was only a temporary facility that would not be suitable for future expansion or rehab. All of these guys failed to get a new arena because they city of Sacramento dropped the ball - NOT THEM!

The fact that Burke has the ability to put money on the table UP FRONT may change the arena equation for the city.

The Maloofs wanted to put 300M into the arena, but wasn't it 10M/year over 30 years or 30M/year over 10 years? If Burke was able to put down 300M or a similar large chunk up front it's hard to imagine the city not being willing to raise another 150-200M with bonds to get it there.

if they don't get this through the BOG they are screwed, that's why. No way they can show their faces in Sacramento again, much less selling a product. That's the only scenario where I do see them selling despite their words.

No one here is arguing the city doesn't share a lot of the blame so I don't know what you're getting at. The maloofs have been absolutely disgraceful over the last month and have been completely inept at businesses and politicis for the last 5 years.

Had a fantastic conversation this AM with Cty. Supe Phil Serna. He is KILLING it behind the scenes to keep this team here #HereWeBuild

This needs a JOINT effort from city/county leaders. Write your city and county and let them know you want this arena done! #HereWeBuild

With all due respect, STERN, DAVID ****ING STERN, does not see the problem as that of the Maloofs. He is pointing his finger at the City of Sacramento. When the NCAA said they wouldn't come back, that should have been a hint. It doesn't take a genius to understand that if one basketball organization finds the arena inadequate, another would reach the same conclusion. Rightfully so.

Deflect responsibity - the fighting words of the City of Sacramento. Great offense, huh? Offensive is more the word.

Of course the city still needs to find a way to get an arena done. I put the vast majority of blame on them as far as things getting to this point to begin with. Ignoring the Maloofs completely, the fact is that without a new facility Sacramento will not have an NBA team. So yes, the onus is still on this group (KJ, the council, David Taylor/ICON maybe even Anderson/Burkle) to find a way to get an arena done.

Me being upset with the way the Maloofs handled things doesn't absolve the city in any way. But I will say that win, lose or draw Kevin Johnson has absolutely earned my respect.

KJ hit a three at the end of regulation to send it to overtime ...

If he pulls it off I wouldn't mind seeing this as the next jersey retired and hanging from the rafters in Sacramento

the maloofs were working with an incompetent city council for years.

They finally have a mayor who wants an arena as well and is willing to work with everybody to achieve that goal, something Sacramento has not had in....ever.

Why not just wait a year with this uncertain lockout looming and give Kevin Johnson to prove his worth. If nothing goes in this year, then take your bags and leave.

Issue an ultimatum and that way they will have all the votes they will want from BOG when they file next year.

This. The Maloofs conduct this morning is one step from inciting death threats (I wouldn't be surprised if several of the more passionate fans haven't already done so.).

Really Maloofs? Really?

Wow! They're definitely rattled.

"If I leave you; no one will EVER want you"

If the Maloofs really made a statement that insinuates anything close to this, they have lost what little respect I had left for them. I love my Kings, but I don't want the Maloofs here any more. What a roller coaster ride.....

I will never forget this quote from a movie and as one who knows a little about Japanese culture, this may be more true than not.

"Americans focus on who is at fault and Japanese focus on solutions."

I don't know if this is the truth but the problem is now in the hands of people who can find solutions. I have discussed this so much I am actually quite happy to step aside and let the real problem solvers do their business. The fans have set the emotional atmosphere as well as any group of fans could. Does our devotion effect businesmen? I'm not sure and am getting quite skeptical as to what interest the NBA has in its fans as opposed to their devotion to their owners. In my view, the NBA cannot exist without its fans. Duh!

It appeared to me that to Stern this whole game, whether it's on the court or in the boardroom, is about money. Fans are interesting as money spenders to feed the bloated needs of a small number of people. Fans don't seem quite so interesting as living, breathing human beings.

]Who are the Maloofs to say that a team will never come to Sac if they leave?[/B] This is the city and these are the fans that have relentlessly supported them for what has it been.. nearly a decade? Why don't they go back to where they came from quit acting as if they're the victims. It must feel great to be up on their throne ripping away one of the few things Sacramento can really, proudly call its own.

I really don't find this to be a big deal like everyone here is making it out to be.

That's certainly reasonable and I support it - but if Maloofs don't I would understand given 10+ years of insane frustration with City Hall. Then it would be all about relocating another franchise to Sac - if there's an arena suitable in Sac for them to play ball in.

Unfortunately, because of the weak mayor system in city of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson is just one vote on the city council along with all the other council members. That's it, he's a ribbon cutter in chief - God bless his spirited, tireless heart! People like Serna who is a county of Sac supervisor probably have more, or at least as much pull throughout the region and that's what we need - a regional based solution that takes into account a population of 2.2 million in this area instead of paltry 480,000 that only makes up the city portion.

"Stern on all the Sacramento reporters in attendance: "What's going on here?" Wow, Sacramento cares about the NBA! Who knew?"

Haha, good ol Stern humor.

Kobe? Horry? No effing comment.

I meant it fuguratively. The man in my avatar pic could perform last minute heroics that usually go against us. Hence the "(Ron Burkle)". I'd love to be able to compare him to a Kings player, but that would typically bring completely wrong connotations when it comes to closing out the biggest game ever.

Even if it can support it in theory, there's still the Lakers and the huge resistance they're going to put up because of the TV revenue they'll lose. That alone could result in a relocation fee the Maloofs simply can't pay.

I never doubted southern CA's ability to support 3 teams. I'm sure professional number crunchers can quantitatively prove that one. To me, the issue is adding a 3rd team to LA while Sacramento and Seattle both don't have a team. Those are great NBA cities.

That is so true. Even after Katrina it was all about pointing fingers and assigning blame.

They have terrible pokerfaces.

no s&*t. They repeatedly make emotional statements to the media. It it were calculated might make some sense, but it comes across as knee-jerk.

On a similar note; I kind of wonder if KJ's despair/slow death stuff from weeks back actually were calculated emotional statements. Sure seems like he was planting the seeds of Maloofs vs. Sacramento. It came across as defeating then, but now... I think he's a better politician than many give him credit for.

The maloofs are saints compared to Shinn.

Seriously, other than some bad PR moves, what have they done?

Exactly just that. The PR moves is going to KILL them.

Does anyone have a sparknotes version of the current status? I read 10 pages of posts, and it was just giving me mixed answers! I don't understand how there can be ANOTHER extension for the Maloofs.
