Greg Oden's finally looking ready. But the guy who will get him the ball is banged up.

The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Wednesday that guard Brandon Roy will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday. The operation will repair a tear in the meniscus that was revealed by MRI on Tuesday. Blazers team physician Dr. Don Roberts will perform the procedure at Southwest Washington Regional Surgery Center in Vancouver, Wash., and a timetable for Roy's return will be established after surgery.
Oden, the top pick in last year's draft who missed all of the 2007-08 campaign after right knee surgery, worked out for the media on Tuesday.
The 7-footer from Ohio State showed no signs of problems in two-on-two work with teammates Steve Blake and Channing Frye and former Arkansas star Steven Hill, a 7-footer invited to practice with Portland. Oden isn't allowed to go five-on-five until next month.
"I'm feeling good," Oden said. "I do not have any pain or soreness in my knee."
Roy is part of a young nucleus for the up-and-coming Blazers. The 2006-07 Rookie of the Year has averaged 18.1 points, 5.0 assists and 4.6 rebounds over his two years in the league.
Roy helped the Blazers improve by 11 wins in his rookie year to a 32-50 mark, and even without Oden, Portland jumped up to 41 wins last season.

Roy is always hurt -- his constant string of injuries might be the biggest red flag they have up there right now.

Isn't it pretty much becoming a season-ending procedure at this point, when you add in rehab, etc?

I would think he would be out for most if not all of the season... Portland may never start Roy and Oden at the same time...

Man, I wish this guy would stop getting injured...he seems to have caught the bug full-on. It's quite possible he'll be ready for the season, though.

Hopefully Portland doesn't turn into the talented team that was never fully realized because of injuries...

I guess that's more time to try out Fernandez and Bayless, and one more lottery pick for the Blazers. Just what they need!

Between one and two months? Part of Roy's value is his mobility and quickness. I'd sure hate to see that compromised by bringing him back too quickly.

This type of surgery is not huge huge -- its not microfracture or anything. Just in for a snip, and then some rehab. I refuse to call any knee surgery "standard", but it kind of is. Have him sit out most of trainign camp, and I would think he would be most of the way back. Until the next injury.

Thats one more spot the kings move up. Only 14 more to go in the Wester Conference. I dont see the Blazers winning without Roy, because Oden is a slow, and should average just enough turnovers to loose every game he plays in. Next next year, the blazers, in all likelyhood, will be contending for more than a playoff spot.

Can I just put a  after every line?

1) Roy is back before the year.
2) Oden is a center.
3)...are you kidding me?

Ahhh, excuse me, but when did Oden get slow. One of his biggest attributes is his athleticism. Now I agree, the jury is still out on his recovery from surgery, but if all went well, he should be one of the more athletic centers in the NBA.

Having torn meniscus in both my knee's, and knowing the procedure, I would say its nothing to worry about. In the worst case scenario, the biggest concern is infection right after the surgery. But basicly, its just going in and snipping off the meniscus that is sticking out and being pinched by the movement of the knee. A lot of times torn meniscus is caused by hyperextension of the knee. Pretty easy to do when playing sports. Especially one that requires a lot of jumping and landing in awkward positions. Unless the damage was more than that, he should be fine. And I hope so. He's one of my favorites.

Does anyone here fear the blazers ? or what they potentially could become. For me they seem like the blueprint of what we might become in the near future with our youth movement. Injuries seem to always be doing them in but fully fit are a solid team. Hows there cap looking? would they be able to make a decent run at free agency in 2010.

Portland is in fine shape cap wise. After this coming season they have thier two largest contracts coming off the books in Francis and LaFrentz. The following year they loose Miles. Those three contracts alone add up to more than 27 million dollars. Depending on what they do between now and then, they could be more than 35 million under the cap after 2010.

Now they have some resignings to do etc. and that will cost them some cap space. It just depends on who they want to keep. Someone like Outlaw might cost them a pretty penny on the open market, so an extension might be in order, but there goes some of the cap space. Anyway, I'm sure you see what I mean.

Very shortly they should have almost their entire roster at some point in their rookie contracts. Pretty much any other team should be saving their pennies for the upcoming onslaught of extensions, but with Paul Allen's backing they're probably willing to cap out with free agent acquisitions and then use their rights to go deep into luxury tax territory when the extensions roll around.

Yeah, when you look at their roster after the 2010 season, even with their holds on the cap, they're still around 30 mil under the cap. There are a couple of players that they might release their hold on, and even have more space. Pretty scary for a team thats looking good already. Lets hope were in similar position.

For those who don't know what a cap hold is, it pretains to a player whose played his final year of his contract and you still hold the rights to. You can enter the free agent market and use whatever cap space you have without first offering a contract to said player. However a certain amount will be held against the cap until you either tender him an offer and he signs, or you simply release your rights to him. Please don't ask what the amount is, because its a pretty complicated scale. Just go to Patricia's webbsite and look it up.

Pretty much what i expected, cheers for the insight. Im thinking in years to come we shall see the kings youth and blazers youth lead the charge with both of us having a bit of cap space to make a difference in the free agent market and enough upsides on our rosters to make a title push in a few yrs.
