#Bigger than Basketball

As Mike0476 and the Crown Downtown folks have always said, the new arena is much Bigger Than Basketball.

Here's a new article from the Sacramento Business Journal that says:

Prediction: Development could spread beyond downtown in wake of arena

i truly believe that once the balls starts rolling, we're all going to be surprised and amazed at the difference in Sacramento.

that's one thing that opponents of the arena plan have never seemed to understand. it is, indeed, bigger than basketball. when one tremendously ambitious project gets the green light, any number of smaller projects may get the green light, as well. downtown will be revitalized, and the domino effect very well could spill out of the downtown area. it's not about how "cash-strapped" sacramento is, or whether or not it seems like a good idea to spend money on a sports and entertainment complex in a tough economic climate. it's about a city taking charge of its own destiny, and investing in itself, in its own financial future...

But that's impossible because my buddy told me the new owners were poor and couldn't even put the money into escrow. LOL

So looking forward to seeing reality play out, this is the best chance downtown Sac has ever had to be viable and I think it is going to be great for the surrounding communities as well.

I have a lot I could say about this but I would cross the border into politics. Fill in the blanks as you wish.

I believe many people on this forum were thinking far ahead and saw this as a turn around for the entire area. That extra $500 mil thrown in for surrounding development meant that more than just an arena was going to be built. The idea that the arena was being built simply as welfare for billionaires was short sighted. I hope these same people who felt that way will attend the extra 200 events or so that are going to take place in the arena. The benefit is not just to the owners of the Kings. The benefit is to the owners of the arena and maybe even all downtown. If national conventions come here, a lot of cash registers will go ka ching! At present, national conventions do not even consider Sacramento. The number of jobs created at the least on atemporary basis will be very large. Isn't unemployment around 12% for this county now?

Industries looking for a place to move will partially be effected by there being an arena and that their employees and customers will have somewhere to go for entertainment. If the area catches on to this idea that Sacramento not only will be entering the 21st Century but also could be an example for other cities could be exciting. Hey, this is coming from a guy who moved here because it seemed to be the biggest cow town in the country. I am a small town guy. Now I can see the disadvantages of that and hope this desire to progress is catchy.

Crown Downtown has been about more than basketball from its inception. So you can "crown" us visionaries. LOL ;)

Well put. I was walking around where K street runs into Downtown Plaza. On one side of the block, every building is abandoned but ONE. I get giddy thinking about all the new restaurants possibly going in that area, and all the people heading early before the game and staying for a beer after an event. It just get better and better. It's amazing to think about how far we've come in the past four months.
