Benos performance Slovenian national team 2009

Not exactly 100% relevant for this thread but still... it is from the same tournament Slo national team is attending.

Yesterdays performance from Rubio:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeXKcuelY3M

22min, 13pts (4/5 FG), 5asts, 6rebs, 5stls, 2to

Hopefully we will see some Beno vs Rubio tonight!
Is this a tune-up game?

No one seems to be seriously defending with urgency and the game looks chaotic. Players seems so slow and unathletic except Rubio.

Great Britain is a funny team! This Rubio show is not relevant as a great basketball show! Today is much stronger test vs Slovenia, thou our players are very tired as this will be their 4th match in 6 days!

Like watching Sacramento play defense..... just kidding. This is the UK squad and this is a preparation, friendly game, prior to the EU championships.

The UK squad is athletic but that is just about it. But saying that... they should be stronger than your regular NCAA or summer league team.

And Rubio being unathletic, that is a misconception.

That bolded statement of yours - most of us would agree ! It really brings the memory of last year watching that game. :p

Also, I think Rubio is not only fairly athletic, but is a good player too when it comes to making those passes. It would be exciting to see how our very own Beno will fair against Rubio.

I wish we could somehow get Rubio next year to play with Evans. That would be awesome if it will work out. No more Evans VS Rubio !:)

You should take this with a grain of salt. He just said what T-shirt buying Slovenian fans needed to hear.

Perhaps, just perhaps, knowing that what he says will eventually get back to Sacramento, he should say what Sacramento fans want to hear. I have to be honest. Whatever his movtivation, that statement ticked me off..

Me, too! But I've gotten the feeling for awhile that he doesn't much like being in Sacramento.

While I am waiting for the Slo vs Spain game to begin I was checking older youtube clips of the past championships.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvEyuP0wJ6k

Can you recognize that 21 years old tall dude with the 2 days old beard? That team, IMHO, was the best non USA team ever to play in FIBA championships. And look how young they all were!

That team would give the run for the money to the dream team in 92. Sadly only the Croatian part of the team got the chance to play in the finals then (granted it was the strongest part).

Pure poetry....

ESP:SLO (19:21, 30:24, 20:13, 20:13) 89:71

Starting 5 for Spain:
M. Gasol, Garbajosa, Claver, Navarro, Rubio.

Starting 5 for Slovenia:
E. Lorbek, Slokar, Nachbar, Lakovic, B. Udrih.

.....
1Q:
Beno missed first shot. He is moving nice though, penetrating. On defense he is guarding Navarro. Assist to Nachbar for the 3. Just got taken to school by Navarro, but fouled him before he scored. Now he switched to Rubio on defense and his first personal on him. Nice finger roll for the 2. Very nice penetration, layup with his right hand. Navarro to the bench, got someone else to guard Beno (Llull). Went to the bench 3 min to go in the 1st.

2Q: Beno back 6:44 to go in the 2nd. Assist to Golemac for the 3. Great pass to Nachbar under the basket but ESP fouled him. First lost ball, got tangled deep under the ESP basket. Beno out 3:45 to go. Our head coach just got ejected 3:22 to go in the 2nd.

3Q: Beno did not start the 3rd. Beno back 5 min to go in 3rd. We need his play, Spaniards up by 8. Good assist to Slokar for the 3. Airball from Beno. He tried to imitate Navarros one legged fade-away. Our game seems more fluent with Beno at the helm. No real breakthrough though. Spain still up by 10. Great penetration , Beno for 2.

4Q: Beno started with a good personal on Reyes. Nice layup of the pivot for Beno plus foul, converted. This is turning ugly... officials are horrible! Beno out 6 min to go.

Lost the connection for a couple of minutes. Guess a some Slovenian technician got pissed of by the officials and pulled off the plug. Beno did not return to the game, Spain won big.

But I have to say, bias or not, the result does not project the play. If this would be officialed correctly this would be a close game. I guess Spain had to win at home. I will try to dig up Benos stats for ya.

Maybe he needs to think about the national team all year. His last month was his best of the season...picked up his rebounding and assists too to over 6 which is at least somewhat respectable. If he has put up those numbers all year we probably wouldn't all be so down on him.

You also have to wonder about the exactness of a translation. (I'm not saying the OP translated wrong, just that it may mean something else in a native tongue.) Things said in a different language don't mean exactly the same things in English.

Bottom line isn't what he may or may not have said or meant anyway. Bottom line should be what he DOES once he gets here for training camp and beyond.

I hate to disappoint you, but I don't think these slower and less skilled players have a bit of a chance winning against the dream team of 1992.:(

Spoken like a true Kings fan. Damm officiating!:D

Too bad he can't just stay with the national team all year. Hey, in all seriousness, I'm willing to cut him some slack and wait and see which Beno shows up for camp. But! Unless he was misinterpreted, it was a dumb thing to say. When I last checked, he's being paid quite a bit of money by the Kings to play basketball. Just maybe he should try getting excited about that.

The slow and unatlethic and less skilled players ruled the world basketball scene for the last decade. And they almost continued to do so in the Olympics.

And I did not say that they would win. They would make the Dream team play serious bball, that's all. And in the event of bad play by Dream team and good by the unathletic and less skilled players they just might have won.

And just for the record. Don't know how old you are and all but check the bios of Drazen, Kukoc, Radja, Divac.

And these are just their NBA stats.

Arguing basketball with Prince_XY is a lot like banging yourself in the head with a hammer.

Just sayin'...

Have you checked who the guys were in that Dream Team?

Do you really think Drazen, Kukoc, Radja, and Divac ( who were transient All Star players at best in the NBA ) stands a chance competing with those guys, especially if they got them mad to play serious ball?:o

Anyways, this is not to denigrate past international players. But I really cannot see mediocre talents winning against that no-mercy Dream Team.

If I am wrong, then I am wrong. :(

Thanks for the compliment.:p

I am not actually arguing. I was just pointing the obvious. If I'm wrong, then I am wrong. Go watch the clips again and again, same way you should at those clips of Wilt, and you'll know what I am saying.:D

What's obvious is that you're too young to have actually seen any of these players on the court. Clips are fine but they do not tell the whole story.

I am not saying the international squad could have beaten the Dream Team, partially because the style of plays between the continents is/was so different, but I think calling them mediocre talents is insulting...

I think calling them mediocre talents is insulting...

After Lebron, Dwyane and company got the bronze in the 2004 Olympics, trailing both Argentina (gold) and Italy (silver), I think we lost our license to be smug.

Sorry but I doin't understand your comment at all. Prince_XY says the Euros listed were mediocre and I disagree. I think each of the players were very good to excellent. I wasn't being smug or sarcastic. I was calling him out on making what I felt was a demeaning comment.

Right, and I was agreeing with you. Our guys on the Olympic team are always very good individual players, but, despite that, we don't always win, so a little humility is probably in order.

Oops. :o

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. My bad.

So how did Rubio do against Beno? Got those stats on both of them yet?

Looks like a pedestrian effort from both. Nothing impressive outside of the fact that Rubio hit a 3. If he would have posted SL stats like this I would have been extremely disappointed.

Rubio's stats aren't that much better than Beno. If we had drafted Rubio, I would have been pretty unimpressed with that outing.

Not to defend Rubio or Beno, but european basketball just doesn't translate into NBA basketball stat wise. The rules are different. People can stack the paint. More is allowed defensively, and minutes have nothing to do with star status in some cases. A player like C.Paul might go over there and play and his stats would probably look entirely different. As would his minutes. This is especially true on the national teams.
